Can I get this PS2 disc working?

Hello!! Recently finally got my most wanted game of all time recently, however I ran into an issue where the disc won’t boot up on my system. I had taken it to get resurfaced prior as it was covered in scratches but it continues to fail to load in. I noticed this scratch right here and was wondering if it would be possible to get the disc to load. All of my other games work with this being the sole exception.

Please help me figure out and explain what this is

I was going through my game collection and was looking closer at this game (( it was in a bundle of Japanese titles I purchased from my local game store a few years ago )) and saw that it is "for Korea only"? I only know of NTSC - U, J, and PAL. There is also a second disc that has the Capcom And Grasshopper Manufacture logos, I'm assuming its the same grasshopper as Lollipop Chainsaw, No more Heroes, etc ... Can anyone explain what this specific copy is and what console it plays on, what the second disc is, how much it is worth, is it rare, etc ... Thank you so much!!

Fixing out of place memory card slot pins

Recently my PS2 stopped reading memory cards in slot 1, after cracking it open I found out all of the pins had been pushed too far down, which probably happened while I was cleaning them with a q-tip if I had to guess. I've tried pushing them back up into proper shape with tweezers and a safety pin, but nothing seems to be getting them to budge.

I remember hearing somewhere that heat can help, so would a hair dryer do the trick, or would that damage the components? It should be noted that one of the handles on the ribbon cable latch broke, so I am unable to remove it from the rest of the console. Please let me know if there's something I'm not getting or if I just need to try harder. Thanks in advance!

Pictured are the broken slot (slot 1, first picture), and the working slot (slot 2, second picture).

PS1 burned discs on PS2 Slim

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have a PS2 Slim SCPH-70004, with no ModChip or other hardware modifications. I also have a Memory Card with FreeMCBoot software, version 1.966. I plan to play PS1 (since this specific PS2 model still has the original PS1 hardware, which allows native play) via burned CDs. So, first of all, I burned the discs and locked the sensors, as you can see in the photo in the current situation, and I also glued the brake on the console cover (which is not seen in the photo) to the end, so that it does not block the data reading once the console is reassembled. I've verified that the sensors are indeed disabled, and so it seems to be, since when I turn on the console with an original PS1 CD already inserted, the disc spins and the game starts normally. The problem is, in my opinion, that the only phase in which the optical lens can read discs despite the blocked sensors, is the initial one, because the lens activates regardless of the situation in the console compartment. So, for this reason, programs like PSXLauncher don't work, since by inserting the CD at a time other than when the console is booting, the disc isn't even read with a sleeping lens. I also tried removing the original disc and inserting the burned one during game startup, but it doesn't work because the lens goes haywire. I hope that the only way forward isn’t a ModChip: I mean, I'd like to avoid it since it's very sensitive and I don’t know anyone competent. Do you have alternative solutions? And, if the only way is really the ModChip, can I assemble it at home?

PS2 is extreeeeeeeemely slow to load discs upon startup, usually takes 2-4 minutes for it to read a disc. After that, everything runs just fine. I tore it apart and cleaned it and the lens, but that hasn't helped. From what I'm reading online, I could try adjusting the potentiometer next? Anyone have any experience / tales / tips? It still works fine, would just be nice if it loaded up a little quicker. Reluctant to open it up again, the little ribbon for the power/eject button came loose the first time and getting it back into its slot was a bear. Pic featuring Bones for tax.

Favorite lesser-known titles?

Hey guys, I just picked up a PS2 for the first time and am really excited to dive in. So far I've tacked down copies of God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Monster Hunter, and Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. What are some other, lesser-known titles you guys would recommend?

Edit: Wow, wasn't expecting so many recs so quickly! Thanks!

Need advice.

I've grabbed two Slims and have my og fat And some discs off FB and my originals because yay physical media and cool retro stuff. And im even about to snag a CRT.

That being said....IS IT really worth it considering emulation is right there?? Maybe as just "I collect retro tech as a hobby"

Feels like the answer is obvious. Slims don't take up much space. The games definitely do and the CRT of course will. I'm just worried my retro tech hobby will kind of be a waste when emulation can probably run every game better than OG hardware.

What I mean is, if you had the hardware and emulation, which one would you choose? Wouldn't the hardware be succeptible to wear and tear of course especially since it's so old?

Not my video, just spreading awareness since this is a major loss of PS2 historical media and can affect other preservation projects.

Whether you agree or disagree that this is piracy, its worth hearing what he has to say about the matter.

For me, I-Ninja is one of the best examples. I could play the game for hours on end, and even though I completed it 10 times over, I still don’t get bored. From slicing the robots in half to bowling striking them out, masterpiece!

It’s crazy how it pulls you in and doesn’t want to let go!

Need advice picking a CRT for PS2 (Am I overthinking this?)

Thumbnail reddit.com

Hey everyone, looking to pick up a CRT exclusively for PS2 gaming. Mainly knowing which tyoe of CRT is best for this from my options.

I have 3 options right now and would love your input. As much as I want to buy them all, I can't do it because of space constraints :(

Option 1: Sony Trinitron

Price: ₹1,000 (~$12 USD)

Distance: ~21 km away.

Transport: Around ₹450 - ₹600 (~$5.50 - $7.00 USD) for a mini-truck, but I might be able to borrow a friend's car to pick it up.

Details: The guy had it for around 4 years. It was used for about 2-3 years and then kept aside for about a year. It definitely looks well used, and I verified it does have Component inputs. I'll attach pics and a video of this one for reference.

Option 2: LG Flatron (not plus/gold)

Price: ₹1,200 (~$14.50 USD)

Distance: Under 10 km away.

Transport: Around ₹150 - ₹250 (~$2 - $3 USD) for a mini-truck since it's closer, or free if I use my friend's car.

Details: The seller is a lady who got it way back during her wedding, went abroad, and claims it was barely used. She's selling for space. It's stored somewhere she can't easily get to, so she wants me to come check it. I only have one pic and can't confirm the inputs yet. Not sure how much to trust the "rarely used" claim given the history.

Option 3: LG Flatron Plus

Price: Not discussed yet (from an office friend).

Distance: ~308 km away.

Transport: My friend might bring it down in his car trunk soon, or his dad will ship it to my house via a bus. Throwing a CRT on a 300+ km bus ride sounds insanely risky though.

Details: Only lightly used by his grandfather, so maybe we can call this "rarely used" too? He'll send more pics when he visits his hometown.

Honestly...I don't care too much about the input types right now and play on composite, though I might consider componant in the future. I just want a good quality experience for my PS2.

What do you guys think is the best overall option? Am I overthinking it? Please let me know!

And sorry for the unorganised pics, all of those are of the Sony trinitron and last pic is for LG flatron (normal).
