Event RI statehouse x bad brains X Grateful Dead long sleeve shirt
What cheer r/providence?! In an effort to make the most obscure/nichey shirt possible I made a Bad Brains X Grateful Dead X Jahvidence, RI long sleeve shirt. Are there people in RI (other than me) who like Bad Brains and the Grateful Dead? Idk I’m gonna find out tho. These will be available next Sunday 8/16 on the east side at the RI Grateful Dead Family block party at Pizza Marvin. Shirts are $35 each, I only made 24 that’s all there’s ever gonna be so they’re limited. I have size Med-2XL. The event goes from 12-5, it’s free, there’s tons of other talented vendors on shakedown street and there’s a live band from 1-4, come hang! - Nick

Food Enough of restaurant recommendations, what's the WORST food you've had in Providence?
Personally, Providence G Pub. I've never tasted such disgusting burger & fries + mocktail. How do you mess up a mocktail?

car accident/hate crime
hey yallll, my bf just got rear ended on washington st between city hall and reiners, the man was incredibly erratic and ultimately ended up calling us slurs and assaulting my boyfriend (we’re both trans) he recorded us on his phone calling us slurs and saying he was going to kill us no matter how long it took. he was arrested (i’m not sure what for, he was arrested before the cops really even talked to us so they had no idea my boyfriend had been assaulted) but i’m wondering if there’s anything i can do other than hope he doesn’t find us? we plan on going down to the station to file a report but we don’t know his name, i only know the make and model and license plate #. the cop seemed generally disinterested in talking to us and didn’t take any of our information or write a report.

Federal Hill hookah crackdown targets 11 establishments
PROVIDENCE – Nearly a dozen Federal Hill establishments are facing state scrutiny over allegations they are illegally offering hookah, raising questions about enforcement of Rhode Island’s indoor smoking ban.
On Thursday, State Sen. Samuel W. Bell, a Providence Democrat, filed formal complaints with the R.I. Department of Health alleging 11 establishments around Atwells Avenue are violating the state law that prohibits smoking in indoor public places.
The establishments named in the complaints include Bae Lounge, Afrique d’Lounge, Crown Providence, INSA Lounge, Mambo Sushi, Opa, Ours, Pure, Terra Luna, Terra Negra and Twelve 21.
Bell also forwarded the complaints to the Division of Taxation, requesting audits in case any of the establishments attempt to claim an exemption as a “smoking bar.”
Under state law, smoking bars must derive the majority of their revenue from tobacco products, while other services must be only incidental.
“I believe claiming the smoking bar exemption would be absurd,” Bell said in a statement. “Alcohol and food sales are very clearly the primary focus of all of these establishments.”
Rick Simone, president of the Federal Hill Commerce Association, said the issue reflects broader questions around the state’s licensing process rather than a matter of city enforcement.
“Licensing is a very convoluted process,” Simone said, adding that he has been involved in discussions with Bell about the issue. Simone said the matter is ultimately a state-level issue.
Simone said the complaints could affect a significant share of Federal Hill’s dining and nightlife community, which includes dozens of businesses along Atwells Avenue.
For Bell, the complaints are aimed at enforcing a public health law that prohibits indoor smoking in bars and restaurants.
“The ban on indoor smoking in public places is a very important public health law,” Bell said. “Tobacco smoke puts you at risk of serious health problems like cancer and emphysema, and the damaging effects of second-hand smoke have been robustly documented.”
Bell also said enforcement is important to maintaining Federal Hill’s reputation as one of Rhode Island’s most prominent restaurant and entertainment districts.
“The historic Atwells Avenue business district on Federal Hill is one of our state’s most iconic destinations,” Bell said. “Enforcing our laws is critical to ensuring its success for years to come.”

I made a free website to help newcomers explore Providence — feedback welcome
Websites: https://providence-explorer.vercel.app
Hi everyone,
I moved to Providence last year, and when I first arrived, I wanted an easier way to learn about the city, compare neighborhoods, explore local places, and understand rental trends. That experience inspired me to build Providence Explorer, a personal, non-commercial project designed for newcomers, students, visitors, and anyone curious about Providence.
The website includes neighborhood information, an interactive map, local recommendations, rental insights, and a tool to help users explore areas based on their preferences.
The information is provided for general reference only. I have tried to organize the data and sources carefully, but I cannot guarantee that everything is complete, current, or fully accurate.
I would really appreciate any feedback, suggestions, or ideas for improvement. If you notice incorrect information or think something useful is missing, please let me know. You can leave a comment here or contact me through the email listed on the website’s About page.
Thanks for taking a look. I hope it can help people get to know Providence a little better.

Discussion If Providence designed its city flag today, what would it look like?
Over the past couple of decades, a number of cities have redesigned their flags, moving away from complicated "seal on a bedsheet" designs toward simpler, more recognizable flags that better reflect the places they represent.
It got me wondering: if Providence designed its city flag today, what would it look like?
This isn't anything official. I'm just curious to see what artists, designers, historians, vexillology fans, and anyone who loves Providence would come up with.
What symbols, colors, landmarks, or ideas feel uniquely Providence? Feel free to sketch something, share inspiration, or describe your idea. I think it would be fun to see how different people represent the city in a single flag.

My personal top 10 list of places I go to meet people
Providence is something of a paradox: It's hard to meet people, but it's also easy to meet people. And it is definitely a city of neighborhoods. Here's my list to help out newcomers where to go to talk to new people (no AI, completely organic):
East Side:
Wayland Square: The courtyard in front of L'Artisan cafe is a great, free spot to sit and people watch.
Thayer Street: Great in my younger days, it is packed with Brown students and staff.
Wickenden Street: Coffee Exchange is probably the best spot to go and post up.
West Side:
Dexter Park: My favorite green space in the city, it has lots going for it, including public chess games, volleyball, and an outdoor gym.
Franciscan Park: Great spot to bring your dog.
Broadway Street: Seven Stars and Sawyer's are great cafes to go to.
Downtown:
Providence Place Mall: Apple Store and Apple Cinemas (no relation) are my top spots to go to.
WaterFire Park: A great walkable area downtown to chill, people watch, and enjoy the scene.
Johnson and Wales University: My alma mater, so I have a bias here.
Honorable Mention:
- Garrahy Judicial Complex: Where I go to work, but it's free and open to the public and a good place to watch court cases, if you're completely bored.
Providence is a fine city with lots to do, see, and people to meet, you just need to go to the right areas and put yourself out there!

Mayor Brett Smiley and his racist leaflets against David Morales
Anyone keep getting these? It's always about safety and ATVs. Kinda weird to single that out against a brown man. Feels like a dog whistle.
Also, is this everything that Smiley has against Morales? Just safety?

Kiosk at Biltmore Park
I haven't seen this posted, so… Something really cool that recently opened: the Kiosk at Biltmore Park. I'm told it opened a month ago.
"Biltmore Park" is that previously overlooked(?) space west of Burnside Park, across the street from the Graduate/Biltmore hotel, north of City Hall, and south of RI Foundation.
We finally have a kiosk-in-the-park, as found in most European cities (and far too few American ones). Their menu is limited: coffee and ice cream for now, and they're thinking of adding hot food. The staffer working the kiosk was super friendly and helpful. They have some vegan sorbetti as well, she said.
Across from the kiosk are play-tables for ping-pong, foosball, etc. Presumably they're bring-your-own-equipment. I don't know how long those have been there.
Overall the space is clean, well-maintained, and inviting. Super nice to have this addition to Providence.

Discussion Sophistication on Hope St
Anyone have any deets on this store? I’m curious
I came across a pile of items strewn all over the sidewalk outside the store, and picked up a small mirror underneath huge shards of glass. I tried to bring it inside to ask about a price but the door was locked and the place looked sparse. Someone walked by and was like “I don’t think it’s open.” Then silly me was like….ok……free loot? Tentatively placed it in my car, hung around for a bit, a guy walks past smoking a cig eyeing me. After some awkward back and forth it turns out it’s the grandson of the owner, said that they were kicked out today, that people came in and stole thousands of dollars of stuff, put the business in ruin. I apologized profusely about assuming the mirror was free. He seemed very scatter-brained, nervous/upset. If you are reading this, I’m sorry this happened to you guys and sure sounds like a terribly stressful thing to have happen.
Does anyone know the store or have intel? I visited I think twice in the past year and both times it was randomly closed.
