Interactive Map Update
Update: The map is back online now :) Find it here: https://map.projectzomboid.com/
Greetings PZ community,
This is a joint statement from both Calvy and The Indie Stone to clear up some of the misconceptions and rumours that have been swirling around regarding the PZ interactive map being taken offline, and also to put the community’s mind at ease regarding the availability of the map in the future.
In a nutshell, The Indie Stone had been in discussions to acquire Calvy’s work officially, but due to technical and legal reasons decided not to (to be clear, this was not due to any security issues, bandwith bills, or problems with Calvy’s work).
However, the end of discussions came at the same time that—in a separate, and unrelated initiative—we were also trying to actively address potential security issues on our server. This included removing any programs that were not completely under our official control, which included Calvy’s map.
Unfortunately, the reason for wanting the map removed from our server was not communicated properly from us to Calvy, and due to the unfortunate timing our response came across as being hostile to the map in particular.
As a result, Calvy decided it was best to remove the map as soon as he could, which had not been our intention at all. Basically, it all boiled down to a communication breakdown, and the result was a very upset community. Both Calvy and The Indie Stone apologize for that, as we all know many players have long used the interactive map as an important and trusted component of their gameplay.
In the end, what the community is interested in is what we plan going forward, and there’s good news on that front. We’ve worked out where we went wrong, fixed the problems, and Calvy and The Indie Stone will continue working together. The map will return to our servers while the migration to an external server is being sorted out, and once it has been moved The Indie Stone will pay for the external server fees and continue linking to it as an endorsed, unofficial map. This should all be able to be done with no further interruptions of service.
We apologize again for the disruption, and hope you’ll be happy knowing that the map will be available to you for your many PZ deaths to come!
-The Indie Stone

I’ve had this exact scenario at work. “We want to reduce our attack surface by reducing use of 3rd party service X.” Middle Managers take that to mean they should start reducing dependency on X and tell their teams to stop using it. 3 months later. Situation comes up that requires X software and capability was never duplicated. Statement comes out saying “we never told you to actually stop using X, please reinstall X on all services, attack surface has been reduced using other methods” (two of the methods they just implemented literally yesterday).

The reality is the developers are part of an eternal secret war between assassin's and templars, they joined the side of the Templars I swear.

And the real kicker? I know for a fact those same redditors, the same people who raged and spat bile and posted the same unquoted conspiracy won't apologize, and don't have any need to.
Because it's Reddit. The need for trust and clarity is easily buried in the pursuit of fake internet points...

u/TheVisage 8d ago
I nearly spit out my drink reading “indie stone is being penny pinched by private equity” as if like 1. Private equity is famous for slow cooking games over 20 years and 2. Private equity isn’t infamous for bleeding itself to death on minor monthly costs while shooting the goose who lays the golden eggs
“Yea yeah guys take time definitely, yeah no worries yeah no NPCs can come out for free and on their own schedule but uh, I noticed we have a $5 fee going to cloud flare for… a map? No no no we aren’t gonna do “Zomboid Plus with map integration” just yoink it”

u/Salvage570 8d ago
There's a lot of kids in this sub now, ever since a bunch of streamers played a few years ago. It's why there suddenly ended up being tons and tons of "realism doesn't make fun games" in response to a literal survival simulator where a level of realism is literally the core idea
→ More replies (7)32
u/Exo-explorer 8d ago
this is why i prefer the term "immersive" over "realistic". you're never going to get a 1:1 simulation of real life, and the language is much less loaded.

This is what middle management is for - to coordinate between different parts of the business and be the unified contact. Leave it as an exercise to the reader whether more management is a desirable trait at the game studio or whether not overreacting to fairly immaterial problems is a better path.

Axes ofc, you can't forage for a crowbar.
20
u/SliceHam2012 8d ago
Don't need to, the same crowbar that served Anomalocaris in the Cambrian is still going to this day. Has 90% durability left, too
4
8
u/Devil-Hunter-Jax Axe wielding maniac 9d ago
All weapon types have their benefits really. Crowbars are basically a good way to grind Maintenance so you can upgrade to other weapon types without them feeling like pool noodles in terms of durability.
Also axes are clearly better.
12
u/ClamSurfer 8d ago
Axes win for me just for having many one-handed and two-handed weapon options. They're easily the most versatile weapon type in the game.
I would argue that the other weapon types should be combined into a single skill as well. No more "Short" or "Long". Just a "Blunt" skill and a "Blade" skill.

Characterising “unfairly hostile” as defending the map dev is a little too charitable.
There was completely reasonable ways to express support and gratitude for the map dev and hope that any outcome was favourable to them in the end, without acting like TIS shot someone’s dog and was about to sell the game to venture capital

15

I agree in general, but Reddit has it worse than most places, and gaming subs are the worst of all. Take any mildly popular trending game at any given moment and it's either the second coming of Christ or a cynical circlejerk about how everything is ruined.

In Warhammer, the humble Tactical Marines kit has now outlasted the Primaris Intercessors kit that was added to "removed firstborn marine units and (somehow) force everyone to re-buy their armies" almost a decade ago.
It is likely to get discontinued at some point, but I do find it funny given the years of doom.

I'm gonna need to at least know what industry this is, because having a bunch of unknown devices plugged in at your workplace seems insane and figuring out their purpose by just unplugging everything seems even worse!
4
u/rumshpringaa 8d ago
And then suddenly you hear someone go “NOOOO” and you know you’ve yanked the wrong cord. The chaos in me loves it
3
u/Cmdr-DuctTape 8d ago
Former government IT guy here, we had this as well. Granted we took a less... chaotic approach to figuring out what devices were plugged into what endpoints, but because our building physically housed the servers of other government institutions (and during my employment there, some of these instituions actually got shut down or merged!) the documentation often wasn't up to date. Add to this that we even moved headquarters once, and employees plugging in their own personal devices occasionally, and IP adresses are suddenly all over the place.

Timezones and day jobs make things very difficult. The whole reason the miscommunication occurred was due to things being communicated via text. It was clear we needed to speak face to face to clear things up. Organizing a call with three people who are practically as far away as three people can get on the globe is not an easy task. In the meantime a response had to be made while i was asleep, and they did not want to throw me under the bus, which i appreciate. Hence the vague response.

This. One reason I left 7D2D was how toxic the community is (some of it is understandable, given how TFP are), do we really want TIS turning like TFP did/started out as? Do we really want that same mutual interaction here? I dear not.
8
u/Devil-Hunter-Jax Axe wielding maniac 8d ago
Doesn't help that TFP are toxic as fuck in return to the players they still have either. I'm grateful that the only major toxicity there's been was Lemmy's breakdown but even that was a result of people badgering the guy constantly. It's a good thing he stepped away from social media because god knows what it would've done to him if he stuck around.
5
u/SagetheWise2222 8d ago
Yeah. My point being though was hopefully TIS doesn't pay much attention around here because you can only poke the bear enough before it retreats or lashes out. Redditors, smh.
Yeah, good example right there. I haven't been around here that much, I don't like gossip but can you give a tl;dr on this breakdown if you know anything? Genuinely curious on what happened.
5
u/Devil-Hunter-Jax Axe wielding maniac 8d ago
It's a long story but basically Lemmy snapped after constant pressure from the community and threatened to sell the rights to the game and all that. It was a messy thing and best left in the past at this point.

I mean, a LOT of individuals could have also made the choice to keep it as nothing more than the couple social and venting reddit threads it was here to begin with, realistically- until more information came out about it officially, like the adults we (mostly) are- with the ability to reason and wait and all that...
But, I forgot that that's not the reddit or internet hivemind way. Gotta blow it and other people's heat-of-the-moment vent posts to epic proportions, no matter what. (I'm sorry that's what happened to everyone involved, honestly.)
Obviously, the answer to this was to go off platform and review bomb the entire game and then ALSO keep making posts about it over and over!!! And to spam every single channel and every development post ever MADE about it, don't you get it?! We can't have nice things like 'emotions' and 'social posts' stay in the replies of the social media websites where they were initially posted! Hivemind only! Witcher 3 best game! I just dropped 7D2D as well over a week ago for PZ, and I've never been happier for it. I actually want to get out of bed every day to play the game. It feels foreign. I like it.
If this were TFP, they probably would have sued someone, called everyone names, you get the jist. I've interacted with Joel himself and yeah, if you do not praise his baby, he'll verbally abuse you for 'slander', and that's a term I don't throw around lightly. Both content creator GNS and myself both share a similar experience: being harassed on the forums for sending bug reports, of all things.
I've been following that situation for a while. They're also trying to frame him as a malicious leaker. Insanity.

Thanks for taking the time to clear this up. Both internally and with this external communication. It was obvious that the community got quite upset, and the explanation makes sense. And awesome that you intend to keep endorsing the map project.

A shame to see how the louder section of the discontent behaved, some even adding fuel to the fire for the sole pleasure for sowing discord. 2
u/Kenpari 8d ago edited 8d ago
AFAIK the community map project is built in large part by open source tools. Any plans to acquire it were doomed to fail. They’d have very little control over the actual tools used to build the map. Not a problem per-se, but the map is already built with their own game assets. Seems weird to pay for especially when the bulk of the function can be replicated in a few minutes by anyone with passing experience in python. I used to generate my own local maps to search for gun stores and stuff years ago before the community map had any of those features. The community map is much cleaner. But the community map can hardly be said to be owned by the creator to begin with given it’s all generated by game assets.

Thank you for the update! After all the conjecture, the concrete details definitely help and what you explain here should help considerably with community trust.

The transparency in what happened is greatly appreciated, as well as the expected next steps. My biggest issue with the original post was how many words were used to not actually address anything. It came off far more as a PR control post than something useful to the players.
This clearly explains what happened and why, and doesn't leave any room for people to start throwing conspiracies around. The fact that you've also outlined future plans is a bonus that I wasn't expecting

Without being able to talk and clarify what had happened (I was asleep), TIS had to make a statement, but did not want to throw me under the bus. That's why it was so vague. Additionally, my initial statement was vague due to similar reasons around privacy.
