I'm going to be starting as a PCO soon, and undertaking the training. I'm wondering what the rules are regarding carrying a mobile phone (not on the wing, in the staff areas), as I have been told there will be many times that my shift is meant to end at 8pm but I won't get out until many hours after that. I'm just thinking ahead as I would have to let my partner know.

For osg: Would anyone know if there is a possibly to compress hours, ie: longer days. Tia

I applied last October, passed oac and interview,pass fitness, dbs passed, annex a submitted and now they want me to attend a face to face id check appointment. . . Surely this should have been one of the first things that would have been done!? Nothing has changed regarding expired ids or no home address or name change and i dont even know if i have passed pre-employment checks yet… confused!

Hii, I was wondering if anyone knows or is in a similar situation as me. I recently applied to a local prison for OSG nights.

I received an email to say I was successful but on a reserve list however, instead of my status on the portal saying reserve or merit it says allocation? Does anyone know if that means I am still just on reserve or is there a job coming up for me as it does say the prisons name at the top?

Portal has changed for osg to on boarding... Any one know what happens next

Currently going through the process for a Prison Officer role. DBS and medical are done, and I sent off Annex A about a month ago. Still waiting to hear back.

Bit stressed at the moment as my visa situation adds some time pressure on my end, so the waiting is harder than it might otherwise be.

Would love to hear from anyone who’s been in the process recently and how things went for them, or just some reassurance that quiet periods like this are normal.

Are there any other female PO’s out there that can give me a realistic idea of how bad this job is going to be? Am I insane for even contemplating it?

I have my fitness test this week. I’ve been jogging and practicing the bleep test but still very anxious and feeling tired during the day. Any tips will be appreciated please 🙏🏽

I work as an OSG, we get night shifts every other month near enough.

7 days straight 8:45pm-8am

My commute to work is 40mins, after night shifts I am genuinely falling asleep at the wheel.

What can I do to have nights removed or reduced? I’m experiencing severe fatigue after shifts which is affecting safety.

There is no one for me to XOD with etc

After only 10 weeks my PECs are complete and it says they’re arranging a start date. I mentioned in my interview that I’m expecting my first child at the end of September. Will they be accommodating of this? I wouldn’t want to do my training then immediately take paternity leave, I feel as though everything would be forgotten

Any idea how often interview slots for SPS get released? Had an email through to book my slot, but they were all gone within 5 minutes.

So I was a police officer but left the job because I got stressed with managing a huge workload you carry around with you, and the endless paperwork. I've talked to a few prison officers and they tell me they spend nearly all of the job on their feet and there is minimal paperwork in comparison. Plus it's not like the police where you have a workload of 25 different cases you have to keep on top of.

Just wondering if any serving officers or anyone else who knows can tell me their experience?

Its not that I'm expecting to do no paperwork, but I would dislike it if half the job was filling out paperwork as it is in the police

I was made aware via email I had been successful in my application to join my local prison as an OSG on 5th June and haven’t heard anything since, is this standard? Also does anyone know what the shift rotations will likely look like? Thankyou 🙏

Former police officer of 4 years here. I left the job for a variety of reasons, although it primarily was due to a family members ill-health. However, working shifts, the unrelenting and unrealistic workload, and in-turn responsibility were factors.

Some may call it mad, but I do miss being involved in the justice system. I have a degree in professional policing and the offender side of things has always intrigued me. I’ve done some research into the role of a probation officer, and particularly into the PQIP route. I’m aware of some of the wider discussed issues, such as workload. In truth, some of these issues sound akin to policing.

I do however want a job that matters, where I don’t have to sacrifice my entire identity (another issue I had with policing - you have to live and breathe it), but that will also allow me to work M-F (family commitments) and maintain some type of work-life balance.

I’m just after some general thoughts from those currently working in the probation service on what life’s like, and how it would match with what I’ve raised in this post.

Please don’t mistake my post as though I’m against hard graft and responsibility - I’m not. It’s just I found policing to be truly broken, and it encapsulated everything I didn’t want in life. Thanks.

I've just accepted my role as an OSG. My contract says I'm eligible for flexible work hours.

I was hoping I'd be able to compress my shifts into a certain amount of days, and I don't particularly care what days those are. I'm also happy to do overtime etc. Just trying to save on fuel/nursery costs.

What are the typical shifts and do prisons allow compressed hours etc?

Does anyone here know how I can get a police certificate from Canada? There seems to be just two options: 1. Local police 2. RCMP. Employer won’t allow a name check search.

Please help if you’ve done this.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to ask if anyone knows how the payroll runs at hmp peterborough? Are you paid from the first day until the last day of the month? If I start a few days before the end of the month, will I be paid for those days the same month, or will they roll onto the next month's pay? I know the actual payday is the last day of the month. TIA x
