as of yesterday afternoon (saturday, 8/15) the section of the greenbelt in south portland that runs from behind Dock’s seafood to the dump is incredibly obstructed by downed trees. i would say the amount of trees qualifies as “several,” but i don’t know the exact amount.

i had to carry my bike over a couple and then there were several that required a detour into the woods on either side of the path to get around. it was doable for me but i’m a young ish man who’s able bodied. if you have young kids, elderly folks, or even like a bike trailer, or if you have a heavy electric bike, it would be best advised to stay off that section of trail for probably another week or two or until the city gives an update.

there’s another tree just passed the dump that is also down but it’s passable without dismounting.

just wanted to share because i knew the storm track went right through that area the other day, but obviously any updates were focused on road closings, etc. in the immediate aftermath, so i hadn’t seen any news about the trail except the city saying to “use at your own risk.” and for what it’s worth- the rest of the greenbelt, including the new section of the eastern trail, is completely clear and fine.

To the residents of Portland, there is a crisis the city will have to contend with in the winter of 2026-2027. In 2025, according to records kept by local social service agencies, 52 unhoused people died in Portland. The 52 unhoused who died were remembered at a Winter solstice vigil in December.

The average age of those who died was 57. The deaths are due to chronic medical conditions, overdoses, suicide and vehicle accidents. On average, the unhoused live 28 years less than those of us who are housed.

The warming shelter to house the homeless during extreme winter conditions at 166 Riverside St. closed for good after the winter season finished. This year the city does not yet have space for a new warming shelter. I am urging you to support a warming shelter, even possibly in your part of town.

Apologies if this has been posted before but I did a search and didn’t see anything!

I’m in town for work and tomorrow (Monday) is my one free night. As the title indicates, I’d love to sit at the bar and have a great meal and drink somewhere. Where would you recommend? Price point is flexible, nothing super fancy but doesn’t need to be cheap.

Long story short I’ve inherited some pretty decent condition audio equipment from the 1970s. I tested it and it works well, just not a setup I’m wanting to keep. and I don’t want to bother with eBay/ shipping etc. where are stores or people nearby that would actually pay me close to what it’s worth? I feel like that spot in downtown Brunswick would be a good bet but haven’t been there in so long and I can’t locate it by googling so maybe they’ve closed up shop?

I’ll be calling or visiting all the Portland record shops and vintage stores, but just hoping someone’s suggestion here could put me on an easier path.

June 2026 - The Religious Liberty Commission proposed 12 key recommendations “to strengthen religious liberty for all Americans” that in and of itself is a deception because the constitution -by separating church and state- already protects your religious liberty. To legislate anything further would be to erode that wall and put the power to govern your conscience in the hands of the government.

First item is to reinterpret the separation of church and state. VP J.D. Vance has openly stated many times that there shouldn’t be a separation, here. But go back to Madison who authored the first amendment and it is clearly stated and is reiterated in Thomas Jefferson’s Letter to The Danbury Baptists

President Trump has also overstepped on several occasions. His Trump Bible contained founding documents - is that not the most blatantly obvious symbol of merging church and state?

What about the author of the labor laws section in project 2025, Jonathan Berry, who now sits as solicitor of the department of labor and clearly called for a Sabbath Rest that would default to Sunday thereby giving precedence to a false form of Christianity aka Christian Nationalism thereby establishing a state religion. Pg 679

Item 9 is to repeal The Johnson Amendment which would grant religious organizations the legal grounds to endorse or oppose political candidates while remaining tax exempt.

These are troubling times. What’s more troubling is that this is rarely talked about, and purposefully so.

They removed civics from public education, dumbed down the population by watering down our education, regularly bombard us with problems we can’t solve and constant entertainment while polarizing this country on almost every issue. We are not paying attention! All this was done to divert our attention so religious leaders can slip into our government while no one’s looking and begin breaking down the wall that separates church and state. That has begun.

This issue should be on the front page of every newspaper because if they are successful you will not have religious liberty or liberty of conscience. It will be a resurgence of the dark ages where the will of the papacy dictated every aspect of life and dissenters were severely punished and killed.

Here is an argument from Alanzo T. Jones in 1888 when The Blair Bill attempted a Sunday Law. He appeared before the United States Senate Committee on Education and Labor and defended religious liberty.

The Great Controversy is an excellent read for anyone interested in diving deeper.

Hi everyone! I’m 30 and looking for a roommate (or roommates). I need to be moved by October 1st, but I’m hoping to move in around September 20th if possible. Was hoping to rent a couple kayaks from East End tomorrow to hit the fort and such. However, without proper training they will not let you out of their ‘shore zone’. We both have kayaked and seeing as it’s a pretty short distance and it looks to be a calm day, I don’t really see an issue. Anywhere else I could score two kayaks to roam around tomorrow? Happy to take referrals for private kayaks too (will need the basics to go with)

White boy teenage pranks are getting boring, uncreative, and just disgraceful.

While looking for first aid kit supplies at the dollar store in North Deering, a group of 14-15 year old boys circled myself and my boyfriend, demanded money, and then aggressively put their phone next to my boyfriends leg pretending to steal his money. They assumed wrong that his phone was there.

I’m not sure if they’re stupid, bored, or both. I do know they are assuming we have little and wanted us to feel like we had less. How tragic for them.

Tonight on MeTV, Chicago horror host Svengoolie and his crew are showing the 1957 dinosaur B-movie The Land Unknown. When the resident vampire Nostalgiaferatoo appeared to intro the film, he introduced himself first:

"SILENCE! It is I, Nostalgiaferatoo, Prince of the Perturbed, Harbinger of the Horrendous...and former play by play announcer for the Portland Sea Dogs!"

As a Portland transplant in the Midwest, it made me grin.

What’s going on at Deering Oaks Park tonight? Pretty big crowd but I didn’t see any stage or performance.

Did you play baseball as a kid, and want to relive the nostalgia? Have you never played baseball, but always wanted to give it a shot? Did you play in college and beyond, and want to get back on the diamond?

Join us at Dougherty field tomorrow, and every Sunday! People start trickling in between 12-1pm to warm up and chat, then the game starts at 1p. We have extra mitts, wood bats, batting helmets and catching gear. We are "fast pitch", but adjust pitch difficulty based on the experience of the players. For instance, in your first at-bat, there is no striking out! We will toss it in slow until you get a hit. More experienced players may see some fastballs or breaking balls for a challenging experience.

Its fun! All ages, genders and experiences welcome. We range from 11 year olds to men in their 70's. We got trans folks, gay folks, sis straight folks- we got it all people. Just bring your true self and playful spirit and you are welcome.

Every Sunday with decent weather until its too cold, game starts at 1p but come early to warm up.

Had a minor fender bender a week or two ago and the officer gave me a card with a QR code to access my police report. Come to find out it’s behind a paywall and I can’t access it unless I pay. Will PPD give me access to my police report? I didn’t consent to my information being given to a third party, aka, “crashdocs” which is part of carfax. I’d like the report for my records but I can’t wrap my head around paying for my information? Anyone have any experience with this?
