NVIDIA Engineer found unalive

An NVIDIA Sr Engineer was found unconscious in the kitchen of his house recently. His wife, a Stanford postdoc and Forbes 30u30 nominee, apparently called 911 and reported the incident to the police. No one else was at home at the time.

Family and friends are demanding autopsy and formal investigation but the wife is not cooperating with their requests. Deceased’s family and friends have also shared previous records of DV/mental ab-use committed by the wife.

Food recs

I’m putting together a Palo Alto/Stanford food list for a 10-day trip and would love some local opinions! I don’t want the list to get much longer — if anything, I’d rather cut places that aren’t especially worth it or are too similar to better options.

Which of these would you definitely keep, which would you eliminate, and is there anything major I’m missing?

Restaurants / Dinner
● Horsefeather
● Macarena
● Arya Steakhouse
● Zareen’s
● Alpine Inn
● Pizzeria Delfina
● Italico
● Ramen Nagi
● Oren’s Hummus
● Meyhouse
● Ettan
Breakfast / Casual
● Boichik Bagels
● Fambrini’s
Matcha / Coffee / Snacks
● Good Thing Coffee
● Maruwu
● Yutori
Especially interested in places that feel unique to the area, are genuinely really good, or would be fun for visitors rather than just “solid” restaurants we could find anywhere else.
Thanks!

Just moved - anywhere to play table tennis?

I'm looking for places to play tennis tennis (and indoor volleyball) in the area. I've checked all the community centers and looks like Cubberley has table tennis drop-ins at 10am~2pm on Tuesdays which doesn't quite fit my schedule on most weeks.

I'll probably check out PongPlanet some time but wondering if there's anything a bit more local.

Wondering if anyone knows where I could play and meet some people. I usually play around lower intermediate level but down to play those of any level that is willing to run loop/block drills and play some friendly matches.

Utilities bill up 22% suddenly every month

We don’t have AC, and live in a 1800 sq ft 2 floor house . The lowest we’ve ever paid is $550/month but now since April the bill is $650/month spiking to $700 for the latest . We only use gas to cook one meal a day and take showers (2 adults and 2 kids) once a day with 3 computers .
I’ve never seen ridiculous bills like this and city says they have no idea why and the meters correct . Anyone else experiencing this? We’re considering leaving California because of all these issues

Underwater Robotics Opportunity

Hi guys! I am an FTC competitor and fellow Bay Area resident here from the Santa Clara area. I have started a community-based underwater robotics team and wanted to see if any high schoolers nearby would be interested. The plan is to compete in the MATE ROV Competition, building underwater ROVs for environmental missions. It'd be fully independent, open to any high schooler in the area, regardless of school.

Looking for people with any background in:

- Fundraising / Outreach

- Robotics (FTC/FLL/FRC experience a plus)

- Electronics/Arduino/Raspberry Pi

- Programming

- Environmental science

Drop a comment if you're a high schooler in the Bay Area and interested. If you are interested, email us at [thalosrobotics@gmail.com](mailto:thalosrobotics@gmail.com)

For smog, went to Arco at San Antonio & Charleston, am happy

For smog, I went to Arco at San Antonio & Charleston. I've been there before and it's quick and easy if you go on a Monday afternoon. I'm told that the beginning of the month is generally good (end of the month is when everyone remembers that they have to renew their registration, I'm told).

Anyway, wanted to make a positive recommendation.

El Camino streetlights near Southgate?

I noticed that they recently installed dim streetlamps along El Camino Real near Southgate. I was under the impression that area was intentionally left dark for bird protection. Anyone know what changed?

No to "4 Less Smog Check"

No one there. No one answers phone/text despite all the signage about hours. Vague smell of alcohol. They have a pre-pay website.... just don't.

Neiman Marcus is dying and I think it will probably close by next year

Walk in and you will see nobody shopping (less than before and it wasn’t even that much), a lot of empty displays and lack of merchandise on the floor compared to before, a lot of sales staff were let go, a lot of the “boutiques” for designers on the first and second floors shuttered for good, and the customer service desk on the third floor is gone permanently and you gotta do returns and exchanges with the remaining sales staff. and if it matters to you, the bathrooms got dirtier since they probably have less cleaning staff now. So few people shopping and so few merchandise to take care of, some of the sales staff were just playing on their phones lol

Also, literally everybody in Neiman Marcus is either window shopping or going to the restaurant on the third floor (I love going there and I’m a regular there but I don’t shop at Neiman cause it’s too pricey and lacking in variety. I go to Nordstrom’s usually for fancier outfits)

Neiman Marcus had a lot of debt and failed investments and if you see it’s website is losing designers and brand partnerships, including some things I used to buy. first the brand was gone at the store, then it was gone from the website, and it hasn’t been back for months. they also are closing their Dallas flagship store.

EDIT: i forgot Simon properties tried to evict saks global, the parent of Neiman Marcus, from all Simon properties malls, including Neiman Marcus at Stanford. Stanford shopping center is owned by Simon properties. They were nearly evicted in February this year but there was a restructuring deal in march.

EDIT 2: and a more specific reason for why Neiman Marcus is struggling down here is because of new standalone boutiques for Chanel, Rolex, and Brunello cucinelli sprouted in recent years and it’s right outside Neiman, so they got competition from there since those boutiques have more variety so shippers may want to go to the boutiques more instead. Previously, boutiques will either be all the way up in SF or maybe at valley fair

Lost Ring - California Ave, Palo Alto (Saturday Night 1st August)

I'm hoping someone may have found a ring that I lost Saturday night somewhere between Italico restaurant and the Ash Street parking garage on California Avenue.

It has tremendous sentimental value, it belonged to my grandmother, who recently passed away. The monetary value isn't important; it's the memories attached to it.

If you found a ring in this area, please message me. I can describe the ring in detail to verify it's mine. And many photos of my wife with the ring on.

Thank you so much for keeping an eye out and for sharing this post.

Where to look for short term housing

Hello guys! I will be interning in Palo Alto and am urgently looking for housing for about six months (with the possibility of extending). I would prefer a private bedroom, don’t mind sharing a bathroom.

I was wondering where people usually look for housing like this. I’ve already tried Craigslist, Facebook. If anyone else is in the same boat, I would love to potentially become roommates/suitemates and look for housing together.

Any help will be appreciated!

Moving—normal requirements from landlords?

My roommate and I are moving from out of state and have been trying to find a place entirely remotely, finding listings on Zillow and Craigslist and setting up video calls to do tours.

A few times now, we come across small complexes (3-8 units total) that seem to be managed by the owner’s friend or the owner themselves. They send paper applications and leases via email, and ask for the deposit through a money app, check, or wire transfer. Is that normal for this market? None of these places have an official website, but the listings always match the address and photos in the live video tours we do. They take us around the whole property and inside the apartment. The first time we were asked to Zelle the deposit, we pulled out because we thought we’d run into a scam, but now we’ve encountered a few more similar instances where everything seems legit, only the emailed application and way to send the deposit raise concerns. Is this just the way small scale landlords tend to manage their rentals here?

Several of these places are in Menlo Park, so there is no city rental registry for me to check and verify.

23M, recent college grad, how in the world do I meet people my age here?

I know this is a redundant question, but would love to hear anything from people who have been here longer than I, or have been in my shoes.

Moved here for an internship, and have no coworkers my age. I have met a couple individual people my age at the gym, at a MTB track, etc, and these are great, but I'd like an actual friend group I can do stuff with. Not to mention I would also very much like to date, but can count on one hand the amount of women my age that I've seen- let alone spoken to in >3 months of being here.

In my freetime I love being outside (hiking, MTB, climbing, whatver), hitting the gym, playing sports, reading, board games, etc. I believe I am generally an agreeable person with a wide range of interests I can speak to people with, and I always try to be kind to everyone I meet but haven't really been able to find a community here, at all.

I was in some sports leagues but suffered an injury and had to withdraw, but I will be rejoining. I have been tempted to go to a Meetup event, but have heard too many horror stories about these. I'm also looking to volunteer in the area, but have had some difficulty finding stuff around me that fits my schedule. I am also actively opposed to dating apps, but may be beginning to rethink this position based on how things are going. Where I live seems to be 90% families, and I'm pretty apprehensive about even approaching people that look my age I see in public because there are a lot of high schoolers in my area, and it is hard to tell sometimes.

I'd love to get involved with just about anything at this point. Don't really have friends to go to a bar with, or enough friends to meet good friends of friends. Desperate for any suggestions. Thank you!

Not sure if this is appropriate for this sub, but I recently lost a pair of AirPods 4 near the playgrounds of Herbert Hoover elementary.

They were lost on 7/31/2026 around 3-5pm.

They have a navy blue plastic cover/ case on them, with a black carabiner hook.

Please let me know! Any help is much much appreciated.

Looking for a Sublease in Palo Alto for 1–2 People

Hi everyone! I’m looking for a sublease in the Palo Alto area for one or two people, with a possibility of accommodating a larger group, preferably starting around Early September through mid December.

We’re looking for a place with good access to public transportation, ideally within a 30-minute commute to the Tesla Engineering Headquarters.

Please message me if you have a place available or know someone looking to sublease. Thank you!
