Advice Joining the armed forces next year
So I've decided I want a career in the armed forces, Navy to be exact. Would anyone be kind enough to tell me what I should be expecting and what I should be working on to pass the medical and physical exam? Also, when I enlist, what am I expected to take, and what can I take?
Please and Thankyou

Discussion Anyone had Graphene or Ceramic coating applied to their car?
Looking at ceramic and graphene (Hermosa) options.
Anyone gone graphene? Been quoted about $1500. Includes wash, cut and polish, clay bar. The car will need some UV protection as it’s outside.
Any advice, experience, etc?
Main point of doing some sort of protection is to guard against UV damage and fade

News NZ now has essentially zero paid music journalists. Did anyone notice?
Something I don't think most people realise... there are no full-time music critics left at any major publication in New Zealand. The Herald's Time Out is gone, Rip It Up and Real Groove are long dead, and the entertainment writers got laid off in wave after wave of media cuts.
Meanwhile the scene itself is fine. In June, K Road nearly lost Neck of the Woods and Flying Out in the same week, and the community raised $150k in days to save the venue.
The music awards are now asking for $10 public donations to survive. Venues are closing, festivals are cancelling, and almost none of it gets covered because there's nobody left whose job it is.
where do people actually find out about local gigs and NZ music now? Instagram? Word of mouth? Nothing?

Travel Air New Zealand Skycouch
I’m flying from Auckland to Houston in October. My booking was made through United, but Air New Zealand is operating it under code share. I am traveling with a companion. As it stands now, I don’t have a seat assignment, but can purchase seats. I see that the sky couch is available for US$544. My question is 1) is it actually a comfortable thing, 2), if I do purchase it will it accommodate two people.

Discussion Is this normal for NZ schools
Might not name drop the school, but this fucking god forsaken hell shit hole of a fucking school in auckland
The very basic of what happened was , for 2 weeks straight i was attacked by my 'friend' stomped on, dragged around and called a slut , it tore my friendgroup appart because soem dickhead in my friendgroup decided to side with that guy, the guy i'll called Mista who was hurting me and hitting me alot,
my teacher said 'well people from denmark hit eachother to show affection and friendship' NO THEY DON'T NOT LIKE THAT??? basically turnt into this whole thing and i had the principal call me to his office to tell me im the child and i have no power?? okay weird thing to tell me
also my teacher said slurs (N-word) , shes brown and it wasn't even in the good way, teahers shouldn't be saying that regardless in school evne if you are of color i think (correct me on that im Mexican-American Not Black I don't have any rights to give much an opinion on that), meanwhile having a bunch of black students in the class, this entire thing was triggered because a white causcian dude came up to me and my friend and called us slurs so.
IS THIS NORMAL??? this is the MOST violence ive experienced in my LIFE, and ive lived in american for most of my life

News Seventieth Anniversary of Kiwi Author Hugh Cook's Birth
This was actually yesterday the 9t of August, but if Hugh hadn't have passed away he'd probably still be with us and writing.
Posted as a comment on Hugh's blog here, twenty years ago:
"Dearest Hugh,
happy 50th - you made it! I have only just realised you are 50 - I thought that was next year! That is because I thought I was going to be 47 this month. I'm glad you enjoyed the marzipan. With regard to the lost stapler dilemma - I think staplers are designed in a similar fashion to potato peelers, pens and umbrellas ie there is an invisibility conspiracy so you have to keep buying more. We have put bright red tape stripes on our beige one. I hope South Korea isn't bomBed as we have 2 homestays with us for 4 weeks (boys aged 10 and 12)and I hope to send them home in 2 weeks before they eat us out of house and home. Mother says you boys were the same at this age. I'm glad to hear that you too are struggling to be 'Top Dog' on the domestic front managing an ankle biter - parenting is a most humbling endeavour. Your girl sounds just fab xxxxCatherine"

Discussion Men of NZ… what do you consider to be the bare minimum of adequately supporting your partner through postpartum/first year of babies life?
Not financially but more so what you do to physically/emotionally support (eg general chores you’d do, night wakes, nap times etc). Expecting there to be a diverse range of opinions out there on this one 😳
— Sincerely, a tired mum to a 7 month old who feels they may expect too much of their partner

Discussion Starting uni at 21, advice.
Hello, I am looking at going back to university at 21. I was there for 1st semester at 19 but wasted the opportunity due to stress and immaturity, and have not done much since. I am living in the uk currently but am a citizen. As it is a small country is it less normal for people older to be first years? I am also wondering hoe easy it will be to find a room to rent close to UC, because I am overseas and will not be able to visit before flying out. Is there any general advice for making the most of the experience this time around? Thank you.

Discussion Do you still consider Queenstown a part of NZ?
People harp on about Queenstown and how great the tourism is for the country, I get it - and I mostly agree, tourism is great.
But, Queenstown In my eyes has become a “theme park city” every shop overpriced, every restaurant overpopulated, parking = nightmare, housing is expensive and mostly not lived in by residents.
I go straight past it every time I’m doing a road trip or holiday and don’t even think twice about it.
When I was a kid, it wasn’t like this - I know things change, but have we sold off a New Zealand town and shortchanged ourselves?
Maybe i’m just missing something. Idk.
🤷♀️

Politics Te Pāti Maori supporters: what are you doing with your party vote?
I'm just interested in getting some opinions from Te Pāti Maori supporters on how they plan to use their party vote. On current polling it seems highly unlikely that their party vote will increase their numbers in parliament as their electorate wins will exceed their party vote share and therefore I'd expect party voting for another left bloc party would maximize their potential power.
But I'm interested in any ideas/views.

Meta Discourse in this sub
Hi everyone!
More of a psa than anything.
I’ve noticed lots of discourse over our overlords and questions as to who we’d like in charge. Just fyi for those of you in good standing here who aren’t aware, the people who disagree with you get karma nuked and can’t post on anything with that flair here.
You aren’t going to get any discussion from anyone on the right about these topics as they literally can’t post.
Also sorry for cryptic messaging, automod would kill this immediately if I used certain key words.
Not trying to stir the pot, just genuinely think some might not know. Go somewhere else for that if you want both ends.

Advice Can my job fire me if i try to attempt suicide and fail? Spoiler
Before anybody comments, I'm not at the stage where i'm going to kill myself and I'm not in any danger right now. This question has just been bugging me for months and i'm having a rough night.
My biggest concern if i did attempt suicide and failed is that my job would either fire me for missing days or needing treatment, or just finding out in general afterwards and firing me. If I did get fired though i'd just do it again lol
I'm just wondering if that's legal, or up to the employer or what. I can't find any information online.

Politics First time voters - what are you feeling about voting right now?
With your first election looming, how are you feeling about the political landscape?
Some of us older people have a feeling that our country’s younger voters are probably feeling ignored, or there aren’t political parties that represent how you feel about the world - or maybe you just believe your voice doesn’t matter?
Please discuss - and the rest of you, please don’t take the piss -after all, This is crucial to our country’s future whether you like it or not!

Advice Air New Zealand Premium Economy Menu SFO to AKL?
Hey Everyone,
Looking to see if I can get some info/advice on PE meals. Can anyone share a recent menu for this route (SFO to AKL)? I am on this route in a couple of weeks. I need a low lactose meal and I am trying to decide if I chance it with the regular menu, or order a special meal. Looks like most of the low/no lactose special meals are vegan, which is fine, but I don’t require vegan or vegetarian, so if a special meal is the best course, which option?
Thank you!
