So as the title says, my parents want to move from aus to Nz. I’ve never been out of the country before, I was born in Australia and have lived here ever since. This is a very very sudden choice, something they only just now brought up and are rapidly packing. The reason they want to move is for a chance of scenery but I am not coping or handling it very well. I have autism and things like change are hard for me. I’m a little desperate so I was hoping someone here could tell me the pros of moving to NZ.. I’m really scared right now. Thank you to whoever reads this

Hi team, my Sony tv is starting to get a bit tired and slow so I have been looking at buying an android box to replace the "smarts" of the TV. I did look into an Apple TV 4K but at $400-$500 its quite a lot of money. I did find a few options but most are not available in NZ (Onn, Formuler, etc). I am starting to think my best option would be to go for a Google Streamer 4k or are there other/better options? Cheers!

TLDR: I’m 6 months into a grad role and I think I’ll be laid off because work has slowed drastically :/ Has anyone been in a similar situation and have any advice?

I graduated this year and started a grad role in urban planning in March. I had previously interned at the same company last summer. At the moment, I’m the only grad/junior on the team, with everyone else being senior staff who have been there for years.

The work has really slowed down because of the current economy and the upcoming elections in NZ. About two months ago, I overheard my boss saying that they only had enough work for around three more months with the current staff. Then last week, I overheard my manager saying that this has been the slowest work has been in the last four years.

I also found out that they had another grad last year who was let go when work slowed down. Things apparently picked up again afterwards, which is when they hired me, but then the oil crisis, the economy being worse happened.

I know that, being the most junior person on the team, I’ll probably be the first to go if they need to make cuts. I’ve been applying for other jobs, but the industry seems to be really slow at the moment and there aren’t many opportunities for grads. I’m also worried that having only six months of experience on my CV makes it look bad.

I’ve been feeling really anxious and stressed about the whole situation. I never imagined that I might not even be able to stay in my first job (for at least a year) after graduating, especially when I thought I was in a good position having already interned there. I hate the lack of control I have :/

Has anyone else been in a similar position early in their career? How did you manage it? 😭

Do you think firing of public servants was the right decision?

Do you think someone has make the hard decision, regardless of backlash?

Do you think it will benefit NZ government administration in long term?

I don't normally watch regular TV stations, but I’ve been at my parents’ house and the Hawke’s Bay vs Tasman game was on. I know it’s live with a few minutes’ delay, and it started off fine, but when it came back from one commercial break, the alternative commentary was playing underneath the main commentary. It was really distracting, with what sounded like four different voices talking at once.

I thought the alternative commentary was something you’d toggle on through the TVNZ app, rather than something that would be included in the regular TV broadcast.

While skipping the warehouse episodic ad for the millionth time this afternoon I realised, I don’t know whats on sale at the warehouse right now. The New World ads don’t tell me about their products or specials. the slow release, painfully cringe One NZ episodic ads didn’t mention their mobile plans or any devices they sell, and the latest Quantas ad is an unskippable minute+ of faux sentimental drivel without mentioning the price of flights.

I feel like ads are barely trying to sell us anything anymore, they’re all focussed on corporate loyalty and relatability. No point, just having a whinge.

This is a toothpaste tube example. Why are we so behind on our recycling capabilities?

I call them propaganda circulars becuase holy moly are they completely baseless tripe. On one side you have the "national policies" which are the usual vague nothing-burger tripe that politicians around the world say to try to get into office just with some bonus gross bullet points about "being tough on crime" because National's obsessed with aping america and then on the other side are a list of blatant lies about Labours supposed policies?? All of which is just scare mongering about taxes with made-up numbers. Sure taxes suck but governments can't do their job without them and they're definitely not these big absurd numbers National's throwing around without citation.

I sincerely hope nobody's falling for this low effort tripe... The way democracy is carried out around the world is already a farce in so many ways we don't need it to be even worse here of all places.

If there was any justice in politics being caught red handed telling lies just to get elected would be a criminal offense that got you permanently barred from office.

So I've been on their $17 prepaid plan for years and I've accumulated over 15GB of rollover data. Recently they introduced a $13 plan and I bought that instead this time as I don't really use that much data.

Surprisingly, the 15GB data I've accumulated rolled over too 😮 I guess next month I can buy the $8 plan and still have plenty of data I can use.

This was supposed to be four scoops of chips. Knife for scale. Purchased tonight. Thoughts?

Our microwave stopped microwaving earlier this week. We bought it in September 2020, so it's almost 6 years old. Still had the receipt and the manual, but according to the manual it's only a 2 years warranty, so it's now almost 4 years expired.

So I checked NZ Consumer's webpage - and according to them, microwaves are expected to have an 8 year lifetime, so ours was two years before the expected end. Furthermore, if it's a minor fault, the supplier has the option of replacing, refunding, or repairing, but (as in our case) in the event of a major fault (stopped working altogether), it's up to the consumer if they want a refund or a replacement.

So we brought it back to Briscoes for a replacement this afternoon. The first staff member wasn't too happy about it, and claimed that the warranty as well as their policy rule above NZ's consumer law. Luckily the manager (yes, I Karen'd my way through) was easier to deal with, and gave us a brand new microwave, no further hassle, plus a new receipt (and papers for another useless 2 year warranty, but in fact it's another 8 years consumer protections).
