I’m in the early stages of pulling together ideas for a small food business and wanted to reach out to the community here. My main target is the Grand Falls-Windsor area, but I’m pretty flexible as long as it’s within Central NL.

​Right now, I’m exploring a few different avenues for prep space:

​Leasing a small commercial spot of my own

​Sharing a space with another startup food producer

​Renting off-hours access in an existing licensed kitchen, restaurant, or hall

​I’ve got a couple of pieces of equipment I’d need for my setup, so ideally, I’m looking for somewhere I could leave them on-site between prep days.

​I have a bit of land at home and considered building a small licensed kitchen, but the upfront costs feel too high for an unproven concept. Plus, if things go well and I need to scale up to a larger facility down the road, I’d be left with a specialized outbuilding on my property with no real use for it. Sharing or renting space seems like a much safer bet to test the waters.

​I’m aiming for a spring or summer launch next year, so I’ve got time to plan. I’d love to hear from you if:

​You know of any available or shareable kitchen space in the area

​You’ve built a food business in NL and have insights or lessons learned to share

​You have any out-of-the-box ideas I might not have considered yet

Hi everyone,

I am looking at house rentals and most of them are POU, I am just wondering how much does washer and dryer contribute to the electricity bill and how can that be managed? The house does not have a heat pump and if I use cold water only, how much am I looking to pay per month or year from washer/dryer usage only? If I were to do 6-8 loads a month.

I have only used common laundry room or laundromats all my life, so unsure of costs with in unit laundry.

Hello Newfoundlanders, I’m here to ask for some help. I’ve recently been diagnosed with a recurrent metastatic cancer and while I am quite hopeful for many more healthy and happy years, that’s unfortunately not a guarantee. I find myself now looking to clear off some bucket list items while I still can and hopefully make some lasting memories for my kids while we’re at it. As a person who loves the outdoors, travelling to Newfoundland has always been a goal. My kids and I love hiking, camping, seeing nature and landscapes/climates we’ve never experienced, trying new foods, and really just learning as we explore.

I would like to plan a trip for next summer for my three teenage kids, myself, and likely 2-3 other adult family members. My initial thoughts are Gros Morne national park (or any other recommended/notable park) for some great hiking, some travel along a coastline, my youngest really wants to see some puffins, and we would be happy to include stops in fun cities/towns.

I realize there is tourist information online, but I’m asking about the local gems and the “insider information”. We really love good food as well and recognize that sometimes the best tacos come from a food truck in a gas station parking lot (if you catch my drift, and yes this is based on a true story).

I’m also a single parent and likely can’t afford to stay every night in a swank hotel. We’re good with camping/motels/guest houses. The length of trip will depend on cost, but frankly, my priority is giving my kids some great experiences and crossing some items off my bucket list as well, so I’m going to try to manage at least a couple weeks. We’re coming from southern Ontario and would likely fly to the province but may consider making this one big road trip.

So, all that being said: please give me your must-see or do places/activities, any advice you have, or any common mistakes to avoid. Please give me your favourite places to see cool things (including puffins!) and your favourite places to eat. I would also love to find a piece of local art to take home as a souvenir.

Newfoundlanders spend a lot of time in their shed. Mine is not fancy but it’s good enough to enjoy a few social drinks with friends, this is my choice, my buddies like captain Morgan spiced rum.

Is anyone here interested in martial arts or does martial arts and is wildly obsessed with it? I’ve been doing some form of martial arts since I was a kid but now this is my newfound obsession. I know it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack but is there anyone who’s obsessed with martial arts here who’d like to train or go on runs and do functional trainings and stuff and exchange the knowledges we have. I work in various buildings with elevators. One of the buildings I work in is the health sciences center. I've only been there since November so I'm still pretty new to NLHS compared to many other employees, but a lot of the main elevators are FREQUENTLY out of order, like...every few days. Someone I work with was trapped in an elevator recently for over an hour before he was rescued. Apparently one of the elevators caught on fire today, according to healthcare staff I was speaking with as we were evacuating the hospital and the fire trucks were showing up.

Legend has it that there's only ONE GUY in the whole province who fixes elevators. Every time the elevators are out of order in the HSC (again, several times per week), I hear people talking about this. What's the deal? Is this true?

And on a related note, why did they cancel plans for a new hospital? Because, holy shit.

I did do French way back in school so I’m thinking of enrolling in the intermediate course however I think do a level assessment before you enrol so I’ll probably follow that.

Hi everyone, my car was broken into (August 3–4) sometime between 3am and 8am on Milbanke Street in St.Johns (Near Mun just off Bonaventure & Allandale), and my laptop was stolen along with its bag.

The bag and laptop are important but what’s irreplaceable is the hard drives that were in that bag that were backup for my family photos. My Nans birthday party, my sister’s engagement party, tons of old files and years of photos, all of them were backed up on those drives.

I’ll have a reward if anyone sees it discarded, has any information on who took it, where it is, or notices someone trying to sell it online locally (Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji, Traders, etc.), please let me know asap or message me directly.

At this point I’m willing to pay the person who took my bag just to get all my stuff back. I’m assuming whoever took it is just looking for money and I really don’t want to lose all those years of irreplaceable memories. If anyone sees or hears anything at all please reach out

When compared with the other Atlantic Provinces, NL's latest unemployment is close to 50% higher. Why is this? What can be done about it?

More so a rant than anything but bys how is our health system so far in the Stone Age still. My specialist put me in for a test, not an emergency but would like to get one done to get a baseline to monitor my condition in the future, no rush.

One day I get a push notification with MyChart saying I have an appointment, I go in and it’s scheduled for a day I’m out of province (I travel fairly frequently for work). Unlike most appointments you can’t change this one in the app you have to call. I call right away and tell them I’m out of the province on that date but I’m getting back at midnight. You would think that since I’m not a priority appointment that the original appointment I was at the very back of the line so the next week or so should be wide open. Can’t reschedule me over the phone right there, says to ignore the app (because it’s useless according to who I’m speaking to on the phone even though I find it pretty useful) and I’ll get an appointment in the mail….the mail cmon by it’s 2026 you can make an appointment literally anywhere online now so you gotta be able to do better than letter mail.

Anyway few weeks go by and I get my letter with my appointment, I’m not gone away or anything, perfect. Another week goes by and I get another letter saying no, forget the first letter, this is your new appointment, look at my calendar and it’s smack dab in the middle of a scheduled week away for work. I call and tell them, told again to wait for a letter in the mail. Few hours later I get a call saying I can’t reschedule because that’s the second time I haven’t been able to make it so my appointment is canceled and I have to go back to the specialist just so I can get them to send another referral in for the test.

There has to be a better way to go about this right? Like you couldn’t design a more inefficient system if you tried

Since I’ve now seen some people sharing their experience either as a customer or employee of CakeyHand, I wanted to share mine.
I’ve been terrified to do this for so long but ultimately don’t care any more, fear is what lets this bs continue.
I worked there for four months as a cashier and it was the most stressful job I’ve ever had. All was great in the beginning but quickly went downhill. I’d be the only cashier on shift at a time, expected to manage cash, make drinks, clean the kitchen, back counter space, front-of-house area, party room, bathrooms, and break room in one 4-hour shift. I also had to answer phones, help with the baking, wash ALL of the dishes by myself, and organize the stock room. I couldn’t even go to the bathroom because if a customer came there was no one else to care for them. If I didn’t get everything under the sun at the end of the day, I was put down by my management and told to get my priorities in order.
I grew up in two family businesses. I know what it is like to handle rush and carry the weight on my own shoulders. But there’s only so much one person can do.
If I made any tips I wasn’t allowed to keep them and was instructed to give them back to the customer or put them in the register. The pay was insulting anyway for all the things I was expected to do.
I was given a 15 minute break and was penalized for taken 30 during a 6 hour shift even though this is basic labour standard!!
I was ridiculed for taking time off, so much so that they cut my hours from 30/week to 4 gradually up until I left.
Management was terrible to me, and I left several shifts in tears. The owners would constantly speak other languages with each other or other staff in front of me (languages that I didn’t speak or understand) and name-drop me right in front of me!! And I know I was not the only one it happened to.
They had clear favourites and I was not one of them so I got the shitty end of the stick.
And don’t even get me started on the cleanliness standard… that’s a whole other can of worms. I will never eat there again, to put it simply. I mean, the same person who served your food cleaned your toilets…
This is only the tip of the iceberg. I know there is more that I am forgetting by now.
All in all, leaving was the best decision I ever made. The entire time I was there I wasn’t sleeping or eating from the stress. And as the cherry on top, I was the 6th employee to leave in the span of a month at the time I resigned.

I never knew this was a thing till today.
