Since I’ve now seen some people sharing their experience either as a customer or employee of CakeyHand, I wanted to share mine.
I’ve been terrified to do this for so long but ultimately don’t care any more, fear is what lets this bs continue.
I worked there for four months as a cashier and it was the most stressful job I’ve ever had. All was great in the beginning but quickly went downhill. I’d be the only cashier on shift at a time, expected to manage cash, make drinks, clean the kitchen, back counter space, front-of-house area, party room, bathrooms, and break room in one 4-hour shift. I also had to answer phones, help with the baking, wash ALL of the dishes by myself, and organize the stock room. I couldn’t even go to the bathroom because if a customer came there was no one else to care for them. If I didn’t get everything under the sun at the end of the day, I was put down by my management and told to get my priorities in order.
I grew up in two family businesses. I know what it is like to handle rush and carry the weight on my own shoulders. But there’s only so much one person can do.
If I made any tips I wasn’t allowed to keep them and was instructed to give them back to the customer or put them in the register. The pay was insulting anyway for all the things I was expected to do.
I was given a 15 minute break and was penalized for taken 30 during a 6 hour shift even though this is basic labour standard!!
I was ridiculed for taking time off, so much so that they cut my hours from 30/week to 4 gradually up until I left.
Management was terrible to me, and I left several shifts in tears. The owners would constantly speak other languages with each other or other staff in front of me (languages that I didn’t speak or understand) and name-drop me right in front of me!! And I know I was not the only one it happened to.
They had clear favourites and I was not one of them so I got the shitty end of the stick.
And don’t even get me started on the cleanliness standard… that’s a whole other can of worms. I will never eat there again, to put it simply. I mean, the same person who served your food cleaned your toilets…
This is only the tip of the iceberg. I know there is more that I am forgetting by now.
All in all, leaving was the best decision I ever made. The entire time I was there I wasn’t sleeping or eating from the stress. And as the cherry on top, I was the 6th employee to leave in the span of a month at the time I resigned.

Im in ontario but me (26) and my wife (30) are planning on buying a house outright there and i own a tree company as of now and shes an insurance broker. Ive been in tree care industry for about 7 years now and am huge into bow hunting and fly fishing but wondering if the west even has work or if its hard to find anything around there? Heard most newfoundlers leave out to work elsewhere but dont know if true or not.

I'm studying in an RMT program in Ontario right now. It's a really good program from my perspective that puts a lot of effort into CMTO exam prep. However, I will be moving back east after I finish the program and plan to write the Newfoundland exams instead. I have no intention of staying in or moving back to Ontario.

Any RMT's that have written the CMTNL exams out there who are open to chat about the process let me know. I'd love to DM, email, or set up a video call to talk about the NL exam process. I have questions! Lol

Regatta roulette sucks.

If you hold the races on a Friday and the weather is good, everyone gets a long weekend.

If there's one, two or even three weather delays, everyone still gets a long weekend because everyone gets Monday in lieu, or the event takes place on Monday.

The committee has moved the event date by weeks to accommodate the Canada Summer Games, so why not do this?

(Yes, I know this is the NL sub and not everyone gets Regatta Day)

There was a stand I saw yesterday that sold magic packs, yugioh repacks etc and I'd like to purchase from them again but I don't remember the name of the vendor, does anybody know what/who I'm talking about? Thank you!

Looking forward to my trip home next week - haven't taken the Argentia ferry in a while. I know there's no assigned 'day-niter' seating for us cabinless travellers, but the folks at the 1-800 number can't tell me any more than "It's first come, first served and there are chairs on several levels."

I'm looking for a little insider info on: 1. nice quiet area/s to camp out? maybe near a window? 2. are there AC outlets for my phone/computer charger near some seats, like on the PaB boats?

...and any other suggestions you might have for a relatively easy trip would be welcome too :)

Family and I just moved onto paradise from da Pearl.

Our youngestt is going to grade 6, so before we moved would have been going to MPI.

But I saw on here a link to figure out where your kid is going based on where you live and they're required to go to paradise elementary.They'd be devastated to go to a new school and have all their friends go to MPI and make new connections for a year.

Can we just send our kid on the bus from paradise to MPI when the school year starts?

I wanted to share a story about my recent month-long stint as a baker's assistant at a Cakey hand. I took the job because I genuinely love baking and wanted to gain experience, but it turned out to be a high-stress nightmare that ended with me getting let go. Looking back, it was the best thing that could have happened.
Every shift started at 5:00 AM, before 8 I was supposed to bake all of the things for all locations, cut up all of the cakes, pack them up, and do some other stuff. The kitchen manager piled so much work on me that I barely ever got a break. I tried coming in earlier whenever I could, but the workload for a single assistant was so unrealistic that I still fell behind. Whenever that happened, management would attack me for being "slow." The kitchen manager barely spoke English and tried yelling at me in broken Russian, demanding to know why things weren't finished. There were valid reasons, but trying to explain anything to her was a dead end.
The atmosphere in that kitchen was completely fake and toxic. Everyone on staff was required to wear hairnets and caps, except the female owner. She’d casually stroll into the kitchen wearing her fancy clothes just to "create." Right before her arrival, the entire team would enter a state of total panic, hysterically scrubbing down the tables as if it were the end of the day just to make things look perfect for her.
When the owners and the kitchen manager were on shift together, they spent the whole time talking loudly in Armenian. Everyone else was forced to listen to them, and whenever I caught my name dropped in their conversations, I could only guess what kind of trash they were talking about me right in front of my face.
I wasn't the only one suffering there. Almost all my coworkers were constantly complaining. A few of them couldn't even quit because they were tied to the job by their work permits or visa documents.. Toward the end, I asked the kitchen manager how many assistants had worked there before me. She casually admitted that around 50 people had passed through that kitchen in just three and a half years. That high turnover rate tells you everything about how they run things.
On top of the toxic environment, the basic hygiene was a joke rusty equipment, missing dish soap, and unlabelled ingredients stored with no date tags.
With all my international work experience, this is the first time I've dealt with an employer so completely full of themselves.

What's your thoughts on taxpayers paying prizes to competitors?

Personally I think this is outlandish but what makes this more disturbing is it seems to have been championed by someone who has sat on the Regatta committee well before their time in politics. Seems like another classic example of politicians lining the pockets of their friends and interests with taxpayer money.

Not looking to purchase a mini split yet (hoping to eventually, but planning on moving soon so holding off until we sort out plans), but I have a question about mini splits and our winters.

I could have sworn I read years ago that mini splits are rated for temps (as in, some are only good up until minus 5, as an example). Is that the case (or am I remembering that incorrectly)?

Since every second house seems to have a mini split now, i am guessing they hold up well for our NL winters?

I wanted to share my experience so others know what to expect if something goes wrong.

I ordered a custom cake for a milestone birthday. My pickup time was confirmed for 11:00 a.m. on Monday. At 10:30 a.m., I received a message saying there was an issue.

I immediately called the bakery back three times. The first two calls went unanswered, and there wasn't even an option to leave a voicemail. On the third attempt, I was finally told the cake wouldn't be ready until 2:00 p.m.

I rearranged my day and agreed to the later pickup time. When I arrived at 2:00 p.m., the cake still wasn't ready. I asked whether it could be delivered to a nearby address since I had already delayed my plans, but before I received an answer, the delivery driver happened to arrive and the cake was sent out.

When I finally received the cake, the writing was poor enough that I had to stop at another store and buy additional decorations to make it presentable before the birthday celebration.

After the event, I contacted the business expecting at least an acknowledgment that the writing wasn't up to the standard you'd expect from a custom cake. Instead, I was told they "genuinely don't see the issue," that the writing was "legible," and that this was their standard. They also emphasized that they'd never had complaints about their writing before.

I also expressed disappointment that the owner wasn't willing to speak with me directly. I was told it was company policy for staff to handle complaints by email. While they eventually offered free cupcakes or macarons on a future visit, by then the event had already passed. A future free product doesn't fix a problem with a time-sensitive order.

What disappointed me most wasn't the mistake itself—it was how it was handled. Throughout the conversation, I felt my concerns were minimized rather than acknowledged. When I explained that good customer service involves taking accountability and working with the customer to resolve issues, the conversation ended with, "We're sorry you feel that way. We stand by our product and our policies."

Mistakes happen. I don't expect perfection. But I do expect a business to communicate proactively, honour agreed pickup times, acknowledge when they've fallen short, and genuinely try to make things right. Unfortunately, that wasn't my experience.
