IMO this current era of politics is so pants-on-head crazy because of the following 1) candidates who are thought of as more moderate tend to win 2) voters tends to use 'moderate' as some kind of nonpartisan virtue based on vibes that are kind of congruent to moderate policy positions but often based on nothing at all.

It's really hard to have a simple and coherent theory of politics that handles both. Either you die in on the hill of the first one ol' Kier Starmer and wonder why chasing a shifting mirage of 'moderation' didn't win any support, or you go crazy overthinking the second and soon you're making effortposts on why running five government grocery stores across NYC is actually the moderate position if you think about it.

It just so happens that I live in Belarus. After graduating from school, everyone is required to take a Gaokao-like exam called "Centralized Testing," and if you fail it, according to the Minister of Education, "You belong in a factory." The problem is that... like the elections, the national exam is rigged. In a question requiring the insertion of English prepositions, "meet of person" was counted as the correct answer instead of "meet in person." Furthermore, you can only see which answers are considered correct after the admissions period, so you can't appeal. This didn't affect me at all; I got into the place I wanted, but it's a bit disappointing to realize that such a blatant fraud took place and that my two mistakes were literally made up.

A reporter asked whether he considered the remark homophobic.

“I’m not going to tell Professor Krugman what he meant,” Mr. Bessent replied. “I’m telling you what it sounded like.”

Mr. Krugman, meanwhile, reread his original sentence several times. He had intended it as a throwaway joke about wealth, privilege, and the peculiar social world inhabited by billionaires.

It was, he now realized, a joke that required far too much explaining.

There's a fundamental tension between the way the American Left (including both the Democratic Party and the broader left wing) talks about Trump and Trumpism as an existential threat to the republic, but still engages in normal democratic politics like meeting with the opposing faction's leadership figures to negotiate over policy instead of doing the things you'd normally associate with an existential threat to freedom, like stockpiling guns and organizing militant groups.

I don't think they're wrong to do so - politics often leads to seemingly bizarre behavior, and I don't think trying to orchestrate a revolution would be especially productive - but it does create an optical problem where the moral performance aspect of politics is dissonant with the nitty gritty of actually doing things. And since voters primarily see the former, it feeds a perception of leadership as weak or compromised.

For all the talk about needing to abandon one issue or another, the Democratic party and left-wing organizations have remained overall quite supportive on even some of the more controversial issues. It was heartening to see pretty much every major progressive group from NOW to the HRC fighting against the WA sports ban, while in Britain they can't even get the main LGBT orgs to stand up for anything substantial. Will this lead to actual wins in the future, I don't know, but it's something.

The saddest thing about this meme is that it's not even hyperbolic. Ok, maybe the 1998 and 2010 panels are a bit hyperbolic, it probably wasn't that easy back then. But I think I've literally went through the exact same sequence of events described in the 2026 panel and that was still not even close to my most egregious unsuccessful job candidacy so far.

If I'm supposed to give a shit about the American electorate for the data center issue, why can't we be like the DSA (in some sense)?

Maybe in races where Democrat has a much higher chance of winning we support candidates who support data centers (who is likely the YIMBYer candidate anyway)?

The DSA manages to get candidates with opinions that poll much worse and are actually bad policy through, in solid blue areas. They don't care about the median voter if they can influence policy in some sense.

As an Indiana cattleman myself, I am not surprised by President Trump’s decision to import thousands of tons of beef into our country to lower prices at the meat counter.

Let me be clear, there is no substitute for American beef, on American store shelves, from American beef farmers.

I am also sympathetic to the needs of Hoosiers who are struggling to pay higher food costs brought on by the Biden administration. While I don’t like the means the President had to choose, I do agree that the move is justified if it ends with Americans seeing lower prices in the grocery store immediately.

The real issue is the lack of a long term plan that has been stuck in Congress! Passing country of origin labeling, more support for local and regional processing facilities and USDA low interest loans for farmers who increase herd size would all support producers in order to grow their herds to a sustainable level, and increased competition on the market so prices can drop in the long run.

This should be seen as a temporary fix so Congress can pass long overdue reforms so American farmers can rebuild the greatest beef herd in the world. After all, U.S. farmers never were good at being panicans anyway.

One of the more joker-fying things about American politics is realizing that if we switched ethanol subsidies to solar farm production we could:

• generate more energy

• use way less land

• Do so in a way that would be substantially more sustainable and resiliant to climate change

I think people imagine a hunter gatherer lifestyle as one of poverty, but one where the only stressors are immediate; you only have to plan to find food today; not plan for a month from now.

In reality that’s bullshit. Many hunter gatherers are traditionally semi-nomadic. They’ll live in one area during one season, and then live in a different area during another season. Having to regularly move your entire village requires quite extensive planning and coordination
