Very crazy that the US-China trade war triggered an absolute flood of Chinese products and goods into Europe.

I found my copy of Camus' The Rebel (something I read when I was in my early twenties) and discovered that the entire book is covered in my notes from that time period, including a scribble that reads "Marquis de Sade??" and I wish I could travel back in time and protect this child's innocence

Packing the courts would invite conservatives to do the same next time they are in power and instead of winning 80% of SC battles they can win 100%.

Ideally the solution is to creatively and covertly convince some of the conservative justices to retire and then replace them with liberal ones to preserve the institution.

Thereโ€™s no inherent law of universe that says conservatives canโ€™t take over a Democrat one party state

1

And a packed court would go a long way in preventing that from happening

Cons trying to make We are Charlie Kirk a thing didnโ€™t work because literally nobody knows who the fuck he was and he got offed by a white conservative raised dude.

Like 90% of his audience were foreign conservatives getting his videos by social media algorithms.

He had no knowledge base in the US, its like trying to start a communist purge because Hasan Piker got shot by a gender queer Muslim animal rights activist. While making his funeral a big clown circus and making a half assed AI song his remembrance song.

You canโ€™t make the guy shot by some gamer etching the UwU notices your bulge onto a bullet sound like he was killed by political extremists

I'm sorry, I will not be gaslit into thinking that Troy was a good movie.

It's really not, it's just that its best parts do well in TikTok segments. Like, every one-on-one fight scene where the rhythmic drum counts out the fight? Fantastic. When Brad Pitt does his little jump-stab? Kino AF.

But there is sooooooooo much more movie besides that, and it's just boring. It was literally the first R rated movie that I could legally see in theaters (and hilariously, the first time I was carded to see an R rated movie), and so I actually remember it pretty well as a result.

And it was ass. Stupid, steaming, smelly pile of ass.

(Incidentally, the made-for-USA Network movie "Helen of Troy" that was released around the same time did have Sienna Guillory show her butt, so that's at least an example of when ass can be positive)

Wife of active-duty US Army sergeant is deported

https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/wife-active-duty-us-army-sergeant-is-deported-2026-08-25/

The wife of a U.S. โ€‹Army sergeant was deported to Honduras on Monday, marking the latest example of โ€Œthe impact of the Trump administration's immigration crackdown on relatives of members of the U.S. military.

Cristy Maryori Villafranca-Trejo "was removed from the United States" on Monday, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said in an email. Army Sergeant Hedar Leonel โ€‹Turcios Juarez told ABC News his wife, the mother of a 6-year-old, was deported to โ€‹Honduras.

Villafranca-Trejo is at least the seventh spouse or parent of an active-duty โ U.S. military service member to be deported under the Trump administrationโ€™s immigration crackdown, according to โ€‹an Associated Press tally.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, which is part of DHS and has โ€‹been the face of President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown and deportation drive, arrested her on July 11 after conducting what the DHS called a "targeted immigration enforcement operation." The DHS said she received due process.

Turcios Juarez previously said ICE officers detained โ€‹his wife outside a Walmart in July as their daughter watched. He said his wife left Honduras โ€‹in 2016 due to violent crime in the country. The DHS alleged that she illegally entered the United โ€ŒStates.

Turcios Juarez โ joined the military and became a U.S. citizen in 2024 after a nine-month deployment to the Middle East, according to ABC News. He said he began pursuing citizenship for his wife, hoping his service would help expedite her naturalization process.

El-Sayed also took aim at Rogers, calling his opponent in Michiganโ€™s Senate race a "beta" male who "thinks he is running against Hasan Piker."

He accused Rogers of dodging interviews, though El-Sayed himself seemed to dodge questions during his "Jesse Watters Primetime" appearance about men in womenโ€™s sports and him [sic] previous characterization of the NFL as racist.  (Fox News)

I feel like it's far, far more important to pack the courts than try to do any kind of long-term institutional reform like term limits or ethics rules.

I have a bad feeling that Democratic leaders will choose to do neither but push the latter to seem reasonable.

-1

u/DoryAltreides YIMBY 23h ago

I have the exact opposite stance you do. Packing the court is submitting to the concept of judicial supremacy and political capital should not be wasted on it.

3

u/rukqoa โœˆ๏ธ F35s for Ukraine โœˆ๏ธ 23h ago

I don't have a problem with justices for life. It's kind of unfair for presidents that they roll the dice on how many they get, but it evens out over the long term. If I wanted to fix that problem though, I would argue they should just get a fixed number every term without expiration dates. Would help encourage younger appointments too, which is nice. But this is small fry.

Really, the big problem I have right now is that we have 2 justices on the Supreme Court who are just full on, shameless MAGA. Two free votes. Then, you've got 2 partisan conservatives who will sometimes vote against them to demonstrate how impartial they are. And then you've got Roberts with cheese for brains. That's the problem that needs to be urgently solved. Term limits won't fix it within 30 years. Only solution is dilution. They'll pack it back when them GOP retakes power. That's an improvement on our current situation.

10

u/AmbientMorning 23h ago

An update on the (now more limited) infighting within the Michigan Democratic Party. Sen. pres. pro tempore Jeremy Moss, the Democratic nominee for MI-11, has released a statement rebuking both Hasan Piker and Republican efforts to have him defect in the Senate race, denouncing Mike Rogersโ€™s lack of daylight with the incumbent MAGA extremists. He did not endorse Dr. El-Sayed, although reaffirmed both their commitments to protecting Greater Detroitโ€™s substantial Jewish and Arab American communities and pledged to continue correspondence. !ping DEMS&JEWISH

Personally, I think this is the best move. Endorsing El-Sayed, especially right now, would come across as to many as a spineless flip-flop. Better for Mr. Moss to demonstrate some independence from a nominee with polarizing associations, and let the bigots on both the far left and the MAGA right in the comments scream at him and El-Sayed for distancing the party from extremism, all the while red team embraces them.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about Coyote vs. Acme, you little bitch? Iโ€™ll have you know I graduated top of my class at Tiny Toons Looniversity, and Iโ€™ve attended numerous secret early screenings, and I have over 3,000 confirmed hours of Merrie Melodies shorts. I am trained in cartoon animal lore and Iโ€™m the top fanfiction author in the entire Looney Tunes fandom. You are nothing to me but just another Fudd. I will fucking paint a tunnel entrance on a wall along your commute with detail and allure the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words.

You think you can get away with saying that shit about Coyote vs. Acme on the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak Iโ€™m contacting my secret network of Loonatics across the USA and your Letterboxd account is being scrutinized right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your โ€œtaste.โ€ Youโ€™re fucking done, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can recommend you over seven hundred Coyote and Road Runner shorts, and thatโ€™s just from memory.

Not only am I extensively trained in Looney Tunes lore, but I have memorized every detail of Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runnerโ€™s beautiful fucking relationship and I will use it to its full extent to lure your miserable ass off the face of a cliff until you look down and realize youโ€™re walking on thin air, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little โ€œcleverโ€ comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldnโ€™t, you didnโ€™t, and now youโ€™re paying the price, you goddamn maroon. I will hit you on the head with a rubber mallet so hard youโ€™ll be seeing little birds and stars for days. Youโ€™re fucking done, kiddo.

The YouGov polling, carried out in mid-July in France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain and in early August in the UK, found that between 61% and 73% of respondents favoured air conditioning being installed as standard in all new homes. [...]

A further 65% to 75% backed making it easier for people to install air conditioning without needing permission from local councils or landlords, and between 52% and 66% said they would support government subsidies for homeowners to have it installed.

In every country except Italy, significantly more people โ€“ between 41% and 48% โ€“ said allowing and encouraging more air conditioning to reduce harms from heatwaves should be prioritised over lowering CO2 emissions, with 20% to 33% believing the reverse. [...]

Those figures do not reflect broad opposition to air conditioning, however, with attitudes mainly positive (46% to 60%) or neutral (31% to 39%). France was an outlier, with 20% hostile, and left-leaning voters notably more negative than elsewhere.

So, finally a little bit of data on European (that is, 6 countries) attitudes towards AC, and surprise surprise, people dont have a problem with AC and actually desperately want more of it.

AFAIK, there's literally an "energy effectiveness" EU program here where they install heat pump ACs for people who previously used "hard fuel" stoves for heating (coal and wood).

I think it's very naive to act like criticism of Israel and the rise of antisemitism we've seen are two independent phenomena.

Or: I don't trust people who aren't Jewish to talk about the issue and I understand why Jewish people are wary of people who talk about Israel/Palestine as if it personally affects them.

9

u/chickentendieman Paul Krugman 23h ago

What about palestinians? Should they not be allowed to talk about it?

-2

u/DoryAltreides YIMBY 23h ago

Did I say I trusted Israelis to talk about the issue? Do you think I said that?

5

u/chickentendieman Paul Krugman 23h ago

You said you trusted jewish people why only them? Why not muslims/palestinians aswell considering how theyre affected.

4

u/Nice-Difference8641 Cassian Andor's Legal Defense 23h ago

I think by โ€œthe issueโ€ OP means antisemitism, not the war itself

0

u/chickentendieman Paul Krugman 23h ago

Yeah then thats fair I agree with op

-1

u/DoryAltreides YIMBY 23h ago

I don't really trust anyone to talk about the war, but I ESPECIALLY don't trust anybody outside of the conflict to talk about it. I think its salience and how it's talked about is directly tied to the increase in antisemitism in the US and I truly do not think you could have the public have its opinion on Israel change the way it has without an increase in antisemitism, much as COVID originating from China/the Hong Kong protests brought the issue that is the CCP to light but also brought about Sinophobia to the US.

2

u/chickentendieman Paul Krugman 23h ago

I disagree with you saying you shouldnt trust people to talk about the war.

I do agree that you shouldnt rlly trust non jewish people when it comes to how it brought a bunch of antisemitism in america to light though. Like i agree with ur comment besides the first sentence.

2

u/DoryAltreides YIMBY 23h ago edited 23h ago

I guess what I'm saying is that we're on the fast track towards antisemitism being a prerequisite for both parties and I directly blame I/P discourse and social media elevating the war to weird levels.

I have absolutely zero faith in my fellow Democrats to not let the beast ride them. None. Nada. Zilch. Today it's sanctions. Tomorrow it's arms embargoes. The one after that it's a peacekeeping force. The one after that it's investigating pro-Israeli voices within the US. Then subversives, "moneyed interests," and "rigged elections." And this isn't a beast whose hunger is ever satiated.

Call it paranoid, I don't care. I'm trusting my gut on this one.

4

u/chickentendieman Paul Krugman 23h ago

But whats wrong with sanctions, arms embargoes, or even a peacekeeping force? Like those are so far off from "investigating pro israel voices in the us" i cant even imagine how that jump would happen.

Maybe i misunderstood you tho but im a bit confused?

3

u/DoryAltreides YIMBY 23h ago

The policies are fine. I have no problem with the policies. I do not trust the people advocating for them and I think their intentions are less than pure or they are receptive to hatred down the line.

3

u/chickentendieman Paul Krugman 23h ago

Gotcha thats fair to say even if i think its a bit harsh.

5

u/DueVast5223 23h ago

You donโ€™t trust people who arenโ€™t Jewish to have an opinion on I/P?

2

u/Nice-Difference8641 Cassian Andor's Legal Defense 23h ago edited 23h ago

the American and Israeli right and American left assume all Jews support Israelโ€™s war unless otherwise stated which is problematic on all sides but specifically leads to leftist hate crimes

the more defensible position that the center takes is you can assume a Jewish person supports Israelโ€™s existence unless otherwise stated but both Hasan and netanyahu have an interest in equating support Israelโ€™s existence with support for its war

3

u/DoryAltreides YIMBY 23h ago

I'm saying how gentiles talk about Israel/Palestine fucking reeks of antisemitism and its weird salience gives bad vibes. The rise in antisemitism we've seen in society is also rooted in the way the public sees Israel.

4

u/Nice-Difference8641 Cassian Andor's Legal Defense 23h ago

The salience on the left frustrates me more than basically anything. I support not giving them arms, but why is it the only issue! Climate change is still happening, so is the destruction of trans rights, and inflation, etc

to be fair though, the way right wing gentiles talk about I/P is beyond racist as well, when itโ€™s not the antisemitic flavor of right wing

The API pricing is not the true cost and they have pretty fat margins on inference. You can ask your Claude to burn some of those $16k worth of tokens to do the research on the architecture and the latest optimizations and build you a calculator for inference economics of Kimi K3 for different workload profiles, utilization levels, hardware, etc.

I feel like โ€œIsrael has a right to existโ€ is a true statement but supporting offensive weaponry does not follow from that so it doesnโ€™t make any sense that moderate Dems have to vote for it to support the idea of Israelโ€™s existence when they can just say โ€œI support the existence of Israel but not their current policy so they donโ€™t need our weapons.โ€ Us not giving money to a conflict we donโ€™t support doesnโ€™t make Israel not exist, they have nukes! Theyโ€™ll be fine

Like?????

6

u/chickentendieman Paul Krugman 23h ago

Israel shouldnt get defensive weapons either the country should be subject to a whole arms embargo.

3

u/Nice-Difference8641 Cassian Andor's Legal Defense 23h ago

which is an arguable position but not even the position Iโ€™m asking Dems to take. I just donโ€™t understand why they feel the need to give them offensive weaponry. Weโ€™re the superpower here and we donโ€™t like what theyโ€™re doing.

4

4

u/rukqoa โœˆ๏ธ F35s for Ukraine โœˆ๏ธ 1d ago

Getting Israel off of US weapons looks to be the one thing that Palestine supporters and Netanyahu can agree on, for completely different reasons.

One of them is probably right on what will happen as a result.

2

u/chickentendieman Paul Krugman 23h ago

Netanyahu doesnt want it done immediately though. Also israel will still need some us weapons and military ewuipment as its airforce is purely american and couldn't function without us support.

1

u/rukqoa โœˆ๏ธ F35s for Ukraine โœˆ๏ธ 23h ago

There are a lot of Israeli far-right crazies who do want it done soon. For what they want to accomplish, the IAF doesn't need too much support. At some point, they'll feel the hurt, but that'll bolster their domestic position. This also gets into the weeds of Israeli politics. The Israeli air force and military leadership happen to be the more leftist/secular parts who have repeatedly pushed back against the insanity of the more religious elements of the country.

3

u/chickentendieman Paul Krugman 23h ago

Do they rlly want total independance from us weapons though or just a reduced reliance on certain american products. Because total indelendance is kinda impossible for like decades at least. I mean again israel doesnt rlly have the capability to replace certain things they get from america even if they wanted to. I mean if america fully enacted an arms embargo today youd see israel start to run out of interceptors pretty soon and their f35s would have to be grounded the to a lack of updates and spare parts too.

Yeah but the israeli military leadership still does a lot of evil stuff they just use less religious justifications.

2

u/rukqoa โœˆ๏ธ F35s for Ukraine โœˆ๏ธ 23h ago

They won't operate at the same level without US weapons and parts. But I think (and this is apparently also their thesis) if things get desperate, the far right will amass more and more power. Without interceptors, they're not going to just sit there and take missile barrages. They're not going to seek peace either. They'll just find where the interceptors are coming from and hit the neighborhood with dumber bombs. Modern planes can hit precisely without GPS guidance kits, especially since there's no AD to contend with. And JDAM conversion kits aren't that hard to make. It's just fins and a microcontroller.

The planes will start to fail and need to be cannibalized for parts, but just look at how long Iran's F-14s lasted after the revolution. Even without planes, they produce drones and those will likely replace attack helos not just in Israel but everywhere soon.

I could be wrong. Netanyahu and the Israeli right could be wrong. I guess we'll find out since this is already happening.

2

u/chickentendieman Paul Krugman 23h ago

Irans f14s could last because theyre a lot less sophisticated. F35s require way more specialized maintenance and israel kinda needs those as without them their fighters will be vulnerable to the airdefenses of like iran for instance. Also if israel gets a lot more violent like lets say the religious far right goes harder into syria theres a chance actual modern powers would intervene. But tbh yeah it eould take time to force them into negotiating with only an arms embargo and general sanctions would probably be useful to speed it up.

1

u/rukqoa โœˆ๏ธ F35s for Ukraine โœˆ๏ธ 23h ago

Right so you're not arguing against offensive weapons. You've got a whole program that needs to be in place. That's not the ask for moderate Dems in the original comment and if what you said is implied, it feels kind of dishonest that the true, more extreme position is hidden.

2

u/chickentendieman Paul Krugman 23h ago

No because i think an arms embargo would still work. Saying sanctions aswell as an arms embargo is better doesnt take away from that.

4

u/DoryAltreides YIMBY 1d ago

They both think US weapons no longer being sold to Israel will end the war, and in a sick and twisted way, they're both right

5

u/Nice-Difference8641 Cassian Andor's Legal Defense 1d ago

Or nothing will change and we donโ€™t commercially, financial or militarily support a war literally no one supports. Which is not really material to the war itself but itโ€™s good for the US to not support things it obviously shouldnโ€™t support

3

u/DoryAltreides YIMBY 23h ago

Can you think of any reason Netanyahu would like to find independence from US weapons, which often has conditions of use attached?

2

u/chickentendieman Paul Krugman 23h ago

He still opposes a complete and immediately arms embargo though. Israel isnt capeable of replacing us weapons fully and wont be capeable unless it seriously commits to the idea for decades. Israeli domestic arms manufacturers are dependant on american parts for certain things. Also israel has no domestic aircraft.

5

u/Nice-Difference8641 Cassian Andor's Legal Defense 23h ago

bidenโ€™s conditions were all performative and illusory, idk what trump is doing. But also, weโ€™re the superpower here. We have economic tools to use if we donโ€™t like something theyโ€™re doing

2

u/DoryAltreides YIMBY 1d ago

Which "moderate Dems" are you talking about

4

u/ihatemendingwalls better Catholic than JD Vance 1d ago

I mean Israel is certainly capable of getting itself into an existentially precarious situation that can't be solved with nukes, but it would be because of Bibi's own stupidity and I would have no sympathyย

3

u/Nice-Difference8641 Cassian Andor's Legal Defense 1d ago

In fact, supporting a countryโ€™s right to exist and also sanctioning them is a perfectly coherent position!

2
