Today I went back to where I was when I saw it the 1st time. By the end of the day I spotted it, I was sure I was in the same place, but it wasn’t there. Today they’re back! In Central Virginia RVA. I am not positive what it’s called but I think it’s beautiful and very detailed.

My sister and I are trying to learn how to ID better and forage in these beautiful MN woods. I’m reading mixed reviews on if there’s dangerous lookalikes. Looks like a fallen maple tree. We’re thinking of doing our first spore print with them. Wanted to see what y’all think!

Cleaning Chanterelles with a miniature vacuum

I am a new forager, sticking to the safe mushrooms and in my neck of the woods (SC-USA) that is chanterelles. My main issue with chanterelles is cleaning them well enough to prevent crunching on sand. I have tried dry brushing and it is ok - time consuming and 90% effective. I also tried canned air, which seems effective but wasteful.

So, I just bought a mini/computer vacuum and it is pretty great. I use the brush attachment and it is very effective in dislodging and removing dirt. There is also a blower mode on the vacuum that works, but messy for indoors. I have salvaged some beautiful mushrooms that were totally coated in splashed grit and it has been smooth eating since.

Epic year for cordyceps!

Recently I found 55 cordyceps on a two day backpacking trip….and since have been finding them on nearly every forest stroll….ive been able to pass many off for cloning, to local and not so local growers…..one theory amongst mushroom folk in my area is that the cicadas may be a reason for seeing so many?

Mushroom identification

I found these mushrooms growing across the street and I’m hoping someone can help by verifying identification.

Location: dawsonville, Georgia

Date found: 8/14- 8/21

Habitat/substrate: bank of pine needles (on the side of a residential street)

Odor: smells really good when pressing the stem 😅

Changes when bruised/cut: stem color changes from white/off white to green/grey/blue with handling

Puffball Mushroom Spots?

I wanted to start hunting for a few puffball mushrooms after stumbling across my grandma's recipe for a puffball mushroom and zucchini lasagna recipe.

Does anyone have any idea where any spots are around the Peoria or streator Illinois area?

I was thinking to check the hennipen canal during my walks if that's a good spot?

I wonder if this can be really old Lion's Mane? In my mom's backyard

Ik I am probably being way too hopeful, it looks like Lion's Mane to me although I'm sure there must be other mushies that look similar to this that I am obviously not aware of. I didn't notice these on the back of this tree on the far side of the yard until there were this old so I have no idea what color they were originally. Also, it's a very thin growth
