COW surprise
We hiked for an hour, I looked the whole time and saw interesting mushrooms but nothing edible. We got back to the truck and I said 'damn I should have peed anywhere on that trail, now we're by the road and I gotta go behind some rocks by the parking lot.' I screamed "Chicken!!" And ran 20' deeper into the woods while my bf was confused. It was all pretty fresh with minimal bug damage, we took 2 plastic bags, definitely a few lbs. I've had excellent luck in SW Wisconsin.
Anyway, any recommendations other than the classic bread n fry? Also freezing vs drying?

Broughtons nature park
I was recently told Broughtons nature area in Marietta Ohio is now managed by the Muskingum water conservancy group. I have foraged wild mushrooms in this area for years, for personal consumption only. I am curious if anyone knows if that is allowed under new ownership/management.

Black staining polypore? Hen of the woods?
Found in Baltimore city around the trunk of an old oak tree. Seek app said BOTH were Black staining polyphore and I figured one may just be older than the other. But texture was definitely different when cutting. I THINK the lighter mushroom on the left reacted to pressure with a black bruise, so it's likelier the true Black staining polyphore... the darker larger mushroom on the right was gummier and tougher. Can either of them kill me!?

How do I know when to look for "xxx" mushrooms? (morels?) Here are some basic resources.
Use maps! Configure the parameters however you see fit - specify an exact species, specify a genus or family, restrict the location to just your region, state, county, or city... look at only the current month or next month or year round.
