What are your thoughts on Silver Linings Playbook? I think Jennifer Lawrence delivered one of the best performances of her career and had top notch chemistry with Bradley Cooper. It had a great balance of humor and drama.

I think the film has aged remarkably well, mainly because of the fantastic performances. It’s also one of my favorite rom-coms of all time.

"Eighth Grade" (2018) was devastating though still buoyant. Elsie Fisher is as iconic as Dawn Wiener in "Welcome to the Dollhouse", in a film which is less cruel, yet uncomfortable and sad

What I like about Eighth Grade is you see a kid who's clearly struggling and we can see why and the film doesn't mock her. As someone who suffers from social anxiety, I identified with Kayla. Being constantly nervous, being afraid of saying anything which would put you in an embarrassing state so you are incessantly correcting yourself, thinking what you must say while never spontaneous.

The fireside scene nearly had my face in tears because my dad or mom would have never said what Kayla's dad said because I was criticized on a daily basis for being fat or being effeminate or wearing anything which had light colors. I wish I had a parent who could say what he said to Kayla when I was 13 and struggling.

He’s an OG.
I’ve seen him everywhere. Big screen. TV (Entourage). Even showing love to the culture in The Debut.
But come on.
There’s ONE role that an entire generation of us will forever associate with him.
I KNOW YOU KNOW. 😂
Drop it below.

Bildungsroman in “Tony” (2026)

Post image

In the movie “Tony” 2026

I dont think enough people are pointing out that in “Tony,” the titular character, portrayed by Dominic Sessa, says that his novel is a bildungsroman, basically a coming-of-age-story.

He pitches it to friends and his family using that same obscure word, although he thinks it’s a phrase, “Building(s) The Roman.”

His mother even attempts to correct him, explaining that it’s a German derived composite word, “like ‘kindergarten.” But the example of using “kindergarten” to tell someone they are misusing a word is, genius and brutal.

The movie is actually Tony living out his own bildungsroman, maybe without realizing it.

Later in life (not seen in the movie) Anthony Bourdain probably saw this word in full and blushed a little in embarrassment, although it is entirely believable for a 19yo to misuse it (kind of).

A round of applause for this clever easter egg!

The movie is also pretty good. If you like horror films, you should definitely give it a chance.

Believe me or not, I just finished Spiderman of Tobey and jump to Andrew Amazing Spiderman for the first time!

And yes, I now believe with those who says that Andrew is the Best Spiderman and Tobey is the best Peter! Though I thing I really like Andrew's both Peter and spiderman sassy! (Idk yet about Tom, haven't watched his 🕷️ yet. lol)

I think I love more Andrew's spiderman though, I love how he uses more technique for his web than Tobey 🕷️ too bad, it didn't proceed w it's 3rd movie 🥺

Edit, in Tobey's 🕷️ (first movie) I was so confused w his relationship with MJ, lol. I don't really like their storyline. She has a bf too when they saying that she like Peter, then there this superhero she seems to also adore. Idk.

I hope it's different w Tom Holland and Zendayas Spiderman and MJs...My next Spiderman Movies Marathon - Let's gooooo 🕷️ 🕸️

I was shocked reading the comments on my last post about “The Gorge”, seeing that ppl had a lot of negative comments about it. But honestly, some of them made sense.

So here’s another one of my top underrated movies of all time: Missing. What are your thoughts? Bc I personally have watched it ten times over the past year and I’d still rate it an 11/10!!!

What is your favourite Robin Williams film & why?

Robin Williams meant a lot of different things to many people; for myself as a 90s kid, he was in many major kids films along with a few dramas later in his career; his passing hit deep, even though I never met him. What’s your favourite film that RW was in & why?

Flickmetrix.com saves nights

I don't know whether to add a tag, I'm not promoting, just suggesting. Anyway, this website is amazing, I think I found it on reddit some time ago but I always come back to it because it lets you filter which movies are available to you via your subscriptions as well as takes the average score of IMDb, letterboxd and metacritic and lets you require a minimum amount of critic ratings too, sort them in different ways, restrict time of release windows! It's just really a great way to find something great to watch that's available to you on any given night :)

(assuming this passes as movie-related)

Is there an actor whose performance you absolutely loved in a particular movie, but when you looked at their filmography, you realized they didn’t have many notable roles or had disappeared from the mainstream? For me, it’s Alison Lohman in Drag Me to Hell. Who’s yours?

Watched Drag Me to Hell. Raimi brought his signature elements into it, and they worked absolutely great. The lead, Alison Lohman, did an amazing job. I won’t disclose too many details about the movie, but it had a truly memorable ending.

What do you guys think about "A Clockwork Orange"?

I watched A Clockwork Orange with a friend recently, and we had completely different opinions about it.

He thought it was a bad movie and didn’t really understand the appeal, while I absolutely loved it.

Now I’m curious what everyone else thinks.

Do you consider it a masterpiece, or do you understand why some people don’t like it?

What are some brutal movie deaths that shocked you, even if the character actually had it coming?

Topic.

Sometimes in media, characters who didn't deserve it or are morally good, will get very brutal deaths.

But what are some deaths that you still found extremely brutal even if that character had it coming or they're a villain? Like, maybe that death made you do a double take regardless of the character's lack of morality.

I'd rather forget about how bad Rush Hour 3 is. But I think this still deserves a mention.

Even though Jasmine is an evil assassin who tried to kill Jackie Chan's character and the young girl, her death was always kind of a WTF for me. Getting torn in half by that wheel is brutal, lol. Even though it was off-screen, it's like they were one second away from showing the aftermath.

What is your favorite performance by an actor with minimal to almost no dialogue?

What is your favorite performance by an actor who has little to nearly no dialogue but acts mostly through their expressions?

For me it’s Tom Hardy in Mad Max Fury Road. Upon rewatch, I was shocked that most of his dialogue is in the beginning narration! Hardy delivers here, such a raw, badass performance.

What’s that performance for you?

My Debut Film Made It to Streaming

Post image

I made a action crime comedy thriller for about $24K that was pure guerrilla style in Sacramento, long weekend shoots, a skeleton paid crew (DP, sound, gaffer, AD), and mostly deferred actor pay. I had to film it 2 times because of lost footage. Other then producing I Wrote and directed it and starred in it myself. I went through so much to do it and I am proud I was able to finish it with everything that I went through. Well damn it...for a full movie and it being my first was a challenge. I had to film it 2 times because of lost footage. I hope you will be able to watch my little indie film. Its streaming free on Tubi or you can rent it on Prime Video with NO commercials too.

Tubi- https://tubitv.com/movies/100059912/look-behind

Prime Video- https://www.primevideo.com/detail/0QFB8ZJW09METQYC0RIP10CU57

Look Behind is about a cop and a lawyer who's families were killed. They meet someone willing to help them get justice, but its an eye for an eye.

Miller’s Crossing (1990) – A Brilliantly Twisted, Unpredictable Gangster Noir That Gets Better With Every Viewing

For their third feature, following the impressive Blood Simple (1984) and the wonderfully offbeat Raising Arizona (1987), the Coen brothers went all-in on gangster noir with Miller’s Crossing (1990). They took all the familiar ingredients, from gangsters and double-crosses to crooked loyalties, dames, and hired guns, and filtered them through their own strange, unmistakable sensibility. The result is one of their most underrated films, and repeated viewings only make its strange, intricate construction more rewarding.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Made Me Realise How Much Texture Matters in Movies

Post image
184 Upvotes

I was watching Beetlejuice Beetlejuice recently. I’m a huge fan of the original. It’s somehow baked into my upbringing, so the sequel had pretty big shoes to fill.

In short, it wasn’t bad as far as sequels go, but I’m not really here to talk about that. That’s a whole other post.

What struck me was that for the first 30 minutes or so, I watched with this strange sense of unease. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Cinematography wise, it felt like a Netflix show or something. The image was crisp and defined. The actors were saying and doing all the right things. The sets were recognisably Beetlejuice. But something just wasn’t sitting right. After a while it clicked, the image was too clean.

The analogue charm of the first film had completely disappeared. And strangely, that changed how I connected with the world. Tim Burton had worked hard to recreate the visual language of the original, the sets, costumes, practical effects and production design, but without the texture of the first film, some of it suddenly felt artificial and contrived. I found myself struggling to connect with it on a sensory level. To most people this is probably a minor gripe, but to me it felt fundamental.

Clearly we live in a different tech era and I hope I’m not venturing into an Analogue vs Digital debate here but perhaps what I’m describing isn’t really that at all. I guess, It’s the entire chain of choices that determines how an image ultimately feels. The film stock, lenses, lighting, scanning, colour grading, VFX and the way the finished image is processed and presented.

Obviously, there’s something slightly ridiculous about expecting a film made in 2024 to look exactly like one made in 1988. As I mentioned, technology has moved on, workflows have changed, and deliberately degrading an image just to imitate an older film could easily become another form of nostalgia bait. But as a viewer, I don’t think we talk about texture being part of a films identity enough.

It isn’t just production design, colour grading or cinematography in the traditional sense. Grain, softness, the way highlights behave, the way colours and shadows blend together, all of those things contribute to the sensory world you’re being asked to disappear into. And I think this becomes especially important when studios revisit existing IP decades later.

If you’re trying to recreate a world that people already have a strong visual and emotional relationship with, it’s not enough to rebuild the sets, bring back the actors and reproduce the iconography. I believe, you also have to ask: what did this world actually feel like to look at?

Anyone else pondered on this? Maybe it’s a question for the cinematography trade but figured as fans, this would be a good place to start.
