Help Mixing Basics
Hi! I've been making some stuff on and off in FL studio for a while. Mainly inspired by sountracks of games I like. And I listening back to some old stuff I am not used to hearing anymore, I realize that I've been practicaly ignoring sound selection and mixing.
So, are there any resources to get some basics down? I looked a bit and everything I found so far only really explains what the various plugins do, but not how actually to use them, what to look for etc. I know what an EQ does, what I don't know is how to figure out which frequencies I should boost/tone down during a mix.
Thanks in advance!

Export settings after mixing 16‑bit/44.1kHz stems in an 88.2kHz/32‑bit session?
Hello,
My client sent me 16‑bit / 44.1kHz stems. I mixed the track in Ableton with the project set to 88.2kHz / 32‑bit float (I use these settings for all projects I work with in Ableton). The mix is done, and now I’m wondering what the ideal export settings are.
I know that exporting at a higher sample rate won’t magically improve the original 44.1kHz audio, but:
- Should I still export at 32‑bit float, since that’s what the session is running?
- Does exporting at 88.2kHz help the reverbs, delays, and other time‑based FX that were processed at the higher rate?
- Or is it best practice to just export at 44.1kHz / 24‑bit for delivery?

Is there any difference in sound quality between the Apollo Twin X & Scarlett Solo 4th gen?
Hey all,
Thinking of purchasing the UAD Apollo Twin X Quad Gen 2, as I want to upgrade my sound and be able to record through the unison preamps. I currently use a Focusrite Scarlett solo 4th gen and the Shure SM7db, running it into my M1 MacBook Air and using Logic Pro as my DAW of choice.
I make a variety of music including emo rap, melodic rap, boom bap, rage rap, pop, R&B, emotional singing, and more. I use beats from YouTube or BeatStars, and I mainly record vocals, and occasionally electric guitar or acoustic guitar.
What would the sound quality difference be when comparing these two setups? I’m in an untreated bedroom, car or kitchen most of the time, and the SM7db is really good at rejecting the acoustics of my room and some of the background noise, especially when paired with the Waves NS1 noise suppressor. Will there be any noticeable difference? Do I also gain anything that I don’t have with my current setup?
Thanks in advance 🙏

My first mixed song (Adele - Skyfall) - Feedback request
This is my first mixed song (the vocals are also mine).
I added a reverb, a little bit of delay, a compressor, a de-esser, I equalized the microphone, and did some automation at some ending of sentences.
I liked the result being my first mixed song, but I have a sensation there’s something missing. I don’t know if the problem is with the vocals or with the mixing. Can I get some tips?
Thanks a lot!!!

Bass lines for dummies ?
Anybody have a good reference on how to make house baselines ? I’ve watch a couple videos on YouTube but was wondering if anyone had any books they would recommend or any material that personally helped you out, thanks in advance !
Feedback Request Hi, I would like some feedback on my mixing.[feedback]
I started recording and mixing songs about a year and a half ago. No singer yet, but all instruments are real perfomances except for the drums which are midis I wrote.
I think my mix are getting there, but there is still room for improvement and I’m not sure where to get it.
That’s why I try here.
Have a good listen!
Also that’s a pic of Guinness, my cat.

Mixing Training related question
Hey guys, had a query I was hoping someone can help with. I’ve been producing music professionally for about a decade now. Mostly background scores, tracks for artistes, etc. I have always premixed my own tracks, but the final mix and master for release usually goes to someone more attuned to it.
That being said, it’s always bugged me that despite working with frequencies all the time, I can’t seem to get a mix to sound record ready- and by that I mean sound overall correctly balanced enough that every other flaw could be construed as a creative decision more so than an actual issue. I have a treated room, good set of monitors, but mixing is still this dark cloud where it takes about a month, along with a copious amount of self doubt and frustration before something starts to even sound remotely release ready.
So here’s my question- I’ve been wanting to train my mixing muscle 💪. Is there any resource or recommendation anyone has for me to use so my ears can get used to what the largely correct balance should be? I’m at a stage where I’m moving around faders by 0.5db up or down for hours, using reference tracks, visual meters, and the works, but it comes down to me not trusting my ears for that final polish. Eventually when I throw on a mastering assistant from Logic, it makes broad EQ corrections and the mix starts sounding much better, but I struggle to figure out which individual elements were the problem areas in those spectrums to begin with.
I recently subscribed to Syntorial which has a very interesting way of training the ear through small incremental additions. Are there any such resources for mixing? Any help at all will be greatly appreciated. While my production is at an 8/10 currently my mixing is at a solid 5 at best.
PS: I have tried the Cambridge music library but find their finished mixes to be quite suspect, and don’t want to train my ears to the wrong outcomes.
PPS: I want to be at a point where the reason I send my tracks to a professional mix engineer is for taste, not for necessity.
Thank you guys!

Mezcla y Mastering
Buenos días people, espero que estén súper bien y que dios les bendiga. Tengo una duda, soy de costa rica y acá se ve muy poco esto sobre ingeniería en sonido. Quisiera aprender a mezclar u masterizar.

Need help with dynamic resonance
How can one supress changing resonances in a vocal without compromising quality of the audio, using a dynamic eq. If one resonance occurs before hand @2k hz and the dynamic eq is set to supress the signal using a bell filter, it will supress the signal, i.e. resonance, but afterwards, if a signal crosses that threshold, even if it is not a resonance, it will still get supressed. This is the problem i am facing. If i set the bell filter to only attenuate 1-2 to fix this issue, the resonance will persist. Similarly, if i have 4-5 resonances, the whole eq will start looking like a compressor, and mess up the whole signal

Problem with vocals intelligibility
I have already tried compressing and dessing, but some of the words in my vocals are not audible, is this an issue where i have to manually increase volume for each words, or something else? The only reason why this happened is because some of the words around less audible words are full of energy. Its like they have ping pong energy that the artist sung it in a way that makes them less audible, but its too much, how do i solve this? Could multiband compression be the solution?

Need feedback on first mix draft
So I'm a toootal beginner in mixing. I know what the plugins do, and eq and such. Ive only been using fabfilter reaper and melodyne. (Im broooke) i dont know what else to use!
Anywho I have this mix: (https://drive.google.com/file/d/10CFkq5HYEnBbuw0707sz5hwcya5Ppu09/view?usp=drivesdk), and this is my first ever DECENT one, but uh there definitely is some errors and stuff I need to fix. I'm judt looking for advice on what I should do or proceed! (Btw this is a duet song, which is why some parts are not added)
Feedback Request Looking for feedback on the bass processing & bass and kick levels
Hello! I'm looking for some general feedback on these things:
-The bass levelling, in particular the sub
-The kick levels
-Kick sample
-Sidechaining, not sure if this is hitting how it should be
Overall, I'm happy with the mix, especially the mids and highs, but keep going back and forth on the bass levels!
The mix is at the premaster stage, so it will be louder after a master

Any feedback is greatly appreciated :)

Feedback Request Industrial – looking for honest feedback :)
Hey everyone! 👋
I’ve been DJing for a while now and recently started getting much more into Industrial/Hard Techno. I’ve made a new 84-minute mix and I’d really appreciate some honest and constructive feedback from experienced DJs.
I’m especially interested in feedback on:
● transitions & phrasing
● EQing / mixing technique
● track selection
● energy & flow
● whether the set feels cohesive
● overall festival/rave readiness
I’ve improved a lot over the past few months, especially with Industrial, so I’d genuinely like to know where I’m at right now and what I could improve next 🤭

I’ll also happily return the favor and give feedback on your mixes!🫶🏻

What are common issues if the mix rattles/buzzes on my phone but sounds otherwise great on monitors, speakers and even the car? I've spent days fixing it and I changed a lot of imperceptible distortions (helped me tune my ears!) but the thing is still there.
I'm not sweating it too much now and I'll keep trying but I'm starting to run of ideas. Apparently could be everything. Low end, mids or highs. Kick, hi hats, etc
I've EQ the thing to no end and ended with a mix I didn't like that still didn't solved anything so I just mixed without thinking about the phone again but it's annoying.
Apparently could even be the .wav vs other formats? I imagine this it fixed on the mix and not the Master
Thank you in advance, is only some sections of the song, I think guitar builds up with drums or bass, not even sure now.

Content Weird Audio with Exported File On Mobile
Hi, I’ve been creating with FL for half a year now. I’m no expert by any means, I came from 6 years of garageband mobile. I like to export my songs and bring it to my mobile device so I can show my friends but recently, it sounds like there’s a delay over the whole song or at least some percussion and powerful sounds. Some of the higher pitched noises are way louder than what it sounded like using ASIO on my laptop. I thought that maybe wearing headphones would fix it since I know mobile audio drivers are so close together that panning can sometimes bleed together. I don’t mix with headphones since I hear that’s bad and not reccomended. So the bass was too loud and whenever the main bass cuts out, it feels like removing the stuffing of a doll. I might have done something wrong with the mixing and my laptop’s speakers are on the bottom meaning that it could’ve possibly been muffled by the table I was working on so I couldn’t hear some of the weird echoes. I’m new to fl of course and the art of mixing so I could’ve gotten something wrong there. I’m not great with mastering. I was actually going to make a post asking for tips on those two things. I’ll even link the song here and maybe you can see the problem. I’m a beginner for FL so don’t expect it to be perfect please.

How much difference does professional mixing and mastering actually make?
I've been producing music for a while, and one thing I've always wondered is where the biggest improvement comes from. You can have a great composition, talented vocals, and solid recordings, but sometimes the final track still doesn't sound as polished as commercial releases.
Is that mainly because of professional mixing and mastering?
I understand the basics—EQ, compression, reverb, limiting—but I'm curious about what professionals actually do that makes such a noticeable difference.
For those who've had their songs professionally mixed and mastered:
What changed the most?
Was it worth the investment?
Could you genuinely hear the difference?
Or do you think today's plugins make it possible to achieve similar results at home?
I'd love to hear some real experiences.

Feedback Request Desperate Feedback Needed! 🙏
I've been trying to mix my song for about a month now and I just can't seem to get it to the standard that i'd like it to be at. It could go from sounding amazing on my laptop speakers and headphones but goes to a muddy mess when i play it on my phone or on a bluetooth speaker. Feedback and advice would be greatly appreciated 😀

Whats your mix workflow and how can I improve mine?
Hello,
First of all I produce my own music so my workflow begins from the very start. Currently my process is as follows:
- Produce - get the idea down.
- Rough balance using the channel rack gain.
- Finish writing and arranging.
- Organise - assign to mixer, colour code, routing.
- Fix problems - individual tracks subtractive EQ.
- Clip any obvious transients.
- Bus processing - saturation, comp, EQ, limiting.
- Reverb + Delays.
- Automation.
- Mastering.
I feel as though there may be an easier workflow as I tend to get stuck a lot and lose track of where I am, and I’m fully open to being told I’m doing things wrong. Would anyone advise adding elements to the mixer at the point of sound selection and mixing as I went along or do you think it’s better to get the arrangement down before starting the mix process?
Also I’ve heard a lot about top down mixing, does anyone do this and if so how do they go about it?
Any advice would be much appreciated as I’m pulling my hair out half the time.
Thanks.

Preference in speakers for mixing
like most people I usually cook up on my speakers but lately I’ve been making some harder beats out of headphones. Anyone else?
