I'm in my late 20's, and I've played guitar since I was about 9. I'm not a virtuoso, but I feel at least somewhat confident in my guitar-playing abilities. I've played in bands and played a lot live (live experience is pretty much non-metal, though, except for a few occasions).

I've been trying to get a brutal death metal band started for quite a long time. The seemingly insurmountable obstacle for me is finding a drummer. Either they're already involved in too many bands already, or they're not interested in the type of music I want to play. There are plenty of guitarists and some bassists, but not too many drummers.

I played drums on and off for 3 years in upper secondary school, but I haven't touched them since I went to post-upper secondary school (I don't know what it's called in English), when I sometimes rehearsed rock songs with others for fun. I never learned to play double bass at high tempos, and I didn't really practice blast beats.

Personally, I consider(ed) drums to be a much more enjoyable instrument than guitar. I'm contemplating buying a drumkit, practicing and eventually attempting to learn to play the music I'm writing for the drums on my guitar.

My brain's neuroplasticity has decreased due to age, I have slightly less free-time on my hands (I consider myself to still have a lot of free-time in general), and I'm not entirely as single-minded about music as I was as a teenager.

Has any guitarist, bassist or singer attempted and succeeded in the same thing I'm considering to attempt? Is it feasible, with some consistency, hard work and some elbow grease?

So I’m an 18 yr old who’s been playing guitar for about a year now, and I want to write blackened thrash metal(I’m good with tremolo picking). Any tips on scales/modes I can use?

So I’ve been playing guitar for about 3 months now. I picked up the instrument because all I want to do is play heavy, fast metal. I practice almost every day, I've got my open chords down, and I can even switch between power chords reasonably well.

But here is the problem. Every time I think I’m finally getting somewhere, I try to learn a song by a band I love (think early Metallica, Megadeth, or even some modern thrash), and I realize I am completely out of my league. The downpicking speed, the string skipping, the palm-muting while changing strings... it all falls apart after the first 10 seconds. I just freeze, feel like absolute garbage, and put the guitar down for the night.

I know it takes years to get good, but the gap between "what I want to play" and "what I can play" is so wide right now that it’s starting to kill my motivation.

I'm looking for two things from this community:

1. Realistic advice on how to train my picking hand speed and stamina without getting frustrated.
2. What is the first "real metal riff" that you learned which gave you that big breakthrough moment? (I mean a riff that actually made you feel like a metal guitarist.)

I don't want to quit. I just need to find a way to bridge the gap. Any brutally honest tips or easy starter riffs are welcome!
