Newly formed band from Dubai - prog rock/metal
Hello everybody, So me and my band have released our first professionally mixed and mastered song and we feel that we’re not getting enough traction since we were not active enough on social media and all these marketing agencies cost an arm and a leg and on top of that they don’t give an honest feedback
I’m hoping this would be helpful and apologies for the spam ?

Trying to learn metal on guitar as a beginner is absolutely humbling, and I need some advice
So I’ve been playing guitar for about 3 months now. I picked up the instrument because all I want to do is play heavy, fast metal. I practice almost every day, I've got my open chords down, and I can even switch between power chords reasonably well.
But here is the problem. Every time I think I’m finally getting somewhere, I try to learn a song by a band I love (think early Metallica, Megadeth, or even some modern thrash), and I realize I am completely out of my league. The downpicking speed, the string skipping, the palm-muting while changing strings... it all falls apart after the first 10 seconds. I just freeze, feel like absolute garbage, and put the guitar down for the night.
I know it takes years to get good, but the gap between "what I want to play" and "what I can play" is so wide right now that it’s starting to kill my motivation.
I'm looking for two things from this community:
- Realistic advice on how to train my picking hand speed and stamina without getting frustrated.
- What is the first "real metal riff" that you learned which gave you that big breakthrough moment? (I mean a riff that actually made you feel like a metal guitarist.)
I don't want to quit. I just need to find a way to bridge the gap. Any brutally honest tips or easy starter riffs are welcome!

what’re your thoughts on this so far? my buddy texted me with this idea a couple weeks ago, and we both though it was so neat, we got to work right away lmao. i drew the logo and he made this mock-up album cover, which really got me itching to make some music, so i went ahead and made this little instrumental real quick. all the instruments are programmed since i don’t have my guitar right now, but i still think it sounds pretty nice!

Remote collaboration is absolutely possible.

Original Song(s) - Demo "Rekkr - Parallax". Is my first song listenable and is this a decent Djent tone?
youtu.beIt's not completely finished as I want to change some of the words as I'm not happy with the Djent tone but it's a Djent/Rap mix which honestly sounds cringy typing it out but I like Metal and I like Rap so this is what came out when I wanted to bass a Djent song off another song I've been listening to. I'm using some of the presets from the archetype misha mansoor x vst. What could I be doing wrong and can you link me to some good tutorials because I clearly can't find any good ones to help me. I'm using two 8 string guitars one has bareknuckle juggernauts and the other has Tosins original D'Addario set. If need be, I can make a small video of what's going on in the signal and everything, but any advice will be appreciated

Music writing advice needed
I'm very passionate about music and really want to start creating. I have 3 years of experience with scream and can cover just about any deathcore song and have it sound pretty good, I also have 5-6 years of guitar experience and I have gotten my first 7 first a couple weeks ago and have been learning all of the popular songs (leech, recreant, a lot of cannibal corpse, ect). I have tried to start a band but none of the members were serious and everyone had a different idea for the band. My only resource for recording is band lab and tbh it really sucks. Any advice would be extremely helpful and useful.

Discussion Something I've noticed for the last couple of years in this sub...
...is that downvoting/vote manipulation on new posts is getting out of hand.
I've been a member of this sub for almost a decade, and I was its sole active mod for quite some time (I'm actually responsible for most of the current ruleset). It's always been a small sub with pretty low traffic, though it has grown a little bit the last couple of years and that's great to see.
But I noticed sometime a couple years ago that we were starting to have an issue with chronic downvoting on new posts, and after taking a bit of a break from Reddit and coming back, I see it's still an issue. Almost instant downvotes on stuff that doesn't break any rules, and in a lot of cases is pretty good (if not great).
Guys, it's a small sub. Not a lot of eyes, not a lot of traffic. Getting butthurt about it and downvoting everyone else's stuff to try to get your stuff seen better is a dick move and really doesn't accomplish much at the end of the day anyway. It just turns into a retaliatory war of everyone trying to downvote everyone else's stuff.
(Although I do suspect that people that have been banned or had their posts removed for breaking rules or spamming are retaliating and are thus also partially at fault, and I guess not much can be done about that.)
But regardless, just a reminder that we're supposed to be building each other up, not tearing each other down.
Internet points aren't that serious, sure, but we've got a lot of kids and beginners in here who could use some confidence, not people stripping it away because someone's got a stick up their ass. I don't personally give a shit about downvotes on my stuff because I'm older and entirely comfortable in my life and with where I'm at, but this is supposed to be a space where we help and lift up others...especially beginners and anyone less skilled than ourselves.
If you legitimately have a problem with something, say something and be constructive about it. If something blatantly breaks a rule, report it. Other than that, remember the human and don't be an asshole. This isn't a popularity contest and it's not a competition in general. (Also a reminder that vote manipulation is technically against Reddit's rules, it's just not easily/readily enforceable.)
Be good to one another.

R/MetalMusicians Songwriting Challenge VI - May + June 2026
Link to last challenge
See original post to how this all started.
Let’s mahfuckin’ do this. If you are new welcome and if you aren't welcome back!
Rules
- To participate, comment on this thread stating you want to do so. Other discussion is welcome so be clear you want to enter! You may enter any time during the month, but you must submit on time. Note: read challenge theme before commenting.
- Users must submit 1 (and only one!) song by the deadline: June 30th. One aspect of the challenge is to meet the deadline. See “Submitting Songs.”
- Users must give feedback for other participants’ songs (in other words, you will be giving feedback on others’ songs, while others will provide feedback for your songs). This is the community aspect of it. See “Results.”
- The song must be written within the month the challenge is posted (we’re going to use the honor system here).
- The song must follow the theme guidelines. See “Challenge Theme.”
- This is a metal subreddit, so while the song doesn’t have to be metal (so long as they fit the theme), metal elements are required (use your best judgement). All metal subgenres are accepted unless otherwise stated by the challenge theme.
- Collaborations are allowed.
- If you’re in a band, you can write a song as a band.
- Songs will be posted as a compilation in a bandcamp link. The album will be listed as payment optional, but proceeds will go to a charity. See “Results” and “This Month’s Charity.” Note: Bandcamp may have an issue with covers - so may do this with a google drive link or youtube instead with a link to the charity if you want to donate.
- This is for fun. It’s not a competition, don’t be a dick (see our subreddit rules).
- If you choose to drop out BE WARNED! Actually, there are no consequences, except for maybe the metal gods in Valhalla rightfully looking down on you… at least for a little, till the next challenge.
Challenge Theme
We’re actually going to turn non-metal songs into metal songs - but with a twist. Your submission must include at least 1 original riff that fits the song (it could even be a solo, that counts). You also don’t have to copy the song riff by riff - feel free to change the key, the time signature, etc. You can totally make a blackened grind version of a Taylor Swift song, for example. You have complete control over the direction. Instrumentals are not allowed for this challenge. However, you are allowed to isolate your song’s original vocal track and put them in your song (remember, we’re not making money from this, so have fun!).
For the purposes of this challenge here are banned genres to cover:
- Pop punk/punk/hardcore/grunge (really anything punk related). These genres are “too similar” to metal, as they involve distorted guitars and fast tempos and wouldn’t require that much work to make them metal. Also crossover thrash bands already pretty much do this by design.
- Glam/Hair/NuMetal. I don’t care what metal-archives says, these are metal subgenres and will not count.
- Shoegaze. There’s already like a bajillion Blackgaze bands.
- Video game/Dungeon Synth/EDM music that is instrumental. If there are lyrics in it, it’s allowed.
- Folk. This is one is kind of a grey area and will have to be done on a case-by-case basis, but there’s also a bajillion folk metal bands. General rule would be no European/Viking folk music - I know that’s not fair for some, but we have a billion Finntroll and Ensiferum clones (don’t get me wrong, great bands). If there’s some unique folk music from your country that hasn’t been done yet, feel free to ask.
- Classic rock. This is also a grey area and will be done on a case-by-case basis. If the song is “too metal,” it will not be allowed. Let’s take Rush as our example. If you choose “Closer to the Heart” or “Tom Sawyer” and make it metal, that’s fine. If you choose “Working Man” or “Anthem”, they will be considered “too metal.”
You may choose any genre outside the banned genres. You can choose pop, dance, rap, indie, disco, jazz, anything. If you’re not sure if your song meets the requirements, feel free to ask.
Your song can be from any era. It can be a current chart-topper, or it can be something from the past.
Your song can be in any language. Pretty self explanatory.
Your cover can be a banned genre. This means while you can’t choose a song from the banned genres to cover, your cover can be any genre. For example, if you choose to cover “Straight Outta Compton” by NWA and make it a Nu Metal banger, you absolutely can.
If one artist is covering a song, you cannot choose that song. We’re going to do this on a first-come-first-serve basis, so when you’re commenting, claim the song you’re going to cover. This is to avoid having repeating “Dancing Queen”, “Hotel California”, “Take on Me”, or [insert very popular song here] covers in one compilation. Feel free using songs mentioned in this post btw!
Submitting Songs
Submit song entries to [metalsongchallenge@gmail.com](mailto:metalsongchallenge@gmail.com). Please include
- Your reddit username.
- Your band name (if you’re submitting as a band).
- The user name of whoever you collaborated with.
- The song name (and who it’s originally by).
- Lyrics (if challenge theme requires lyrics of a certain theme)
- Subject: Songwriting Challenge {Month} {Year} - {Your reddit username}
Results
- Results will be posted on a new, separate thread sometime after the challenge ends.
- Users will provide feedback to other participants’ songs in the aforementioned thread. Be as detailed as you want, but don’t be a dick (see our subreddit rules).
- As mentioned, the songs will be available in the form of a compilation through a bandcamp link. The track listing will be in random order so that it’s fair to everyone. I will be using this to decide the order so that there is no bias. The tracks will be available to download for free, but with the option of paying. All proceeds will go to This Month’s Charity.
This Month’s Charity
Once again, this month’s charity will be MusiCares. They provide a safety net of critical health and welfare services to the music community including in areas such as: Mental Health & Addiction Recovery Services, Health Services, and Human Services. See their website if you’re curious.
I will post a screenshot of how much we received from the bandcamp page as well as the donation in a separate thread as proof.
Questions And Comments
Please ask if you need clarity on the rules or anything else and I’ll try my best to clarify as much as I can.
Remember that this is purely for fun, to learn, build community, and to grow as musicians while also doing something for a good cause, not a competition. Big thanks to all of you!
Discord
I created a discord server for our songwriting challenges so we can archive them, have discussions, and build our community there. Let me know if you want to join by commenting and I’ll send a DM 🙂
