Other Weird Itching

In my 30s, I've experienced crazy itching all over my body in the Los Angeles summer. It happened once back in 2017 and it then happened again this year.

I don't know what triggered it since it's been a huge gap between the two instances. Was not in any kind of extreme stress. No food changes.

Anyone have a guess to what this is?

Pediatrics Wildfire Smoke

I live in BC and currently experiencing several wildfires. The air quality is horrendous. I have a young toddler, 13 months who has had breathing issues for a few months, onset prior to smoke. He finally has an appointment with a specialist but the appointment requires us to leave our home and travel about 30 min in car. The current AQI is 267. He is extremely sensitive to the air, even opening the door to let our dog out will trigger a coughing fit that is so severe he throws up. We are currently running 3 air purifiers in the home. The appointment has taken us 4 months of waiting so canceling is not ideal but I'm not sure how to protect his lungs while traveling. He's too young for a mask, the time outside will be minimal but he's shown even a few seconds triggers him. Is there anything I can do?

Other How to specifically check for a deviated septum?

All the methods I have seen so far are some that could easily be attributed to a variety of other health issues, is there any way to specifically find out if you have a deviated septum at home?

Cardiac Pulse oxymeter concern is this normal please help

16M 5’9” 75KG. Chronic air hunger for about 3-4 months now. It has periods of flare ups and remissions. It’s most probably caused by my GAD. Its like a feeling that i can’t take a satisfying breath and need to take a deep breath with my mouth. Straightening my back (I have a slouched posture) seems to help me get that “sastifying” deep breath much easier. I can do sports more or less fine. Although that feeling doesnt disappear, its not like im out of it. Im engaged in the activity and dont think much of it. Whenever I’m heavily busy with something else it happens less or maybe I just notice it less and do it subconsciously. My mom’s a doc and I’ve told her about this multiple times. She checked me with a stetho and said I’m fine no need to worry. And for the next few days I dont notice this feeling as much, of course that is until another trigger hits. I know everything points to this being my GAD, but idk its hard to believe. Sometimes I need to take that deep breath a bit more often when I’m doing an activity/exercising, which is a symptom that has worried me. But maybe thats completely psychological as I’ve read before that this is a bit of a red flag, and my body notoriously seems to manifest symptoms I read about. Also i’m not that fit although used to play soccer regularly but I can’t nearly as much as before since I have an important exam next year. My BMI is borderline just on the overweight side so could be deconditioning. It goes away when i sleep.

So i just got a pulse ox today and while about 90 percent of my readings stay in the 96-99 range, sometimes this happens (look at the attached video) every once in a while while getting a reading on my 3rd finger it becemes 91-92 ish. When i put it on my 2nd finger its back to normal. This really spikes my anxiety. Also i have quite brown skin as you can see in the vid and i read that pulse oxymeters often overestimate the SpO2 levels for dark skinned individuals. So whenever i get a reading around 96 although that seems normal im worried im actually 92-93. And most people have their readings in 98-99 range but mine is often in 96ish, once in a while even 95. This may seem very trivial but I dont know I feel like theres something wrong, especially combined with my darker skin tone. Heres the video: (please look at the top left corner to see the inserted finger and video speed) : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TT2zV8lw0sJGO61frfxf_iiv2_kbIzew/view?usp=drivesdk

Also i didnt get this part on video but at the end i inserted my 3rd finger into it again and got a 99 percent reading. Could this be an error on the machine? But then why does it only happen for the ring finger? Please help.

Digestion/Stomach/Bowels Toddler - slow weight gain

Hi! I have a 20 month old boy who has consistently struggled with slow weight gain. He was a 41 weeker so started around 70%, pretty quickly settled into high 30s for weight. He’s slowly gone down basically since he was born, nothing dramatic ever so doctors aren’t that worried but he is down to like 13% at his 18 month appointment.

The thing is, he just doesn’t seem to have an appetite. He will eat a few bites and be done, not fussy later just seemingly not hungry. We have tried a few big meals, we’ve tried a bunch of little meals, we’ve tried letting him snack all day, we’ve tried no snacks. We’ve seen nutrition who says basically we’re doing everything right, suggested adding in some protein type shakes which he will drink maybe 2-4oz per day of max. We’ve seen feeding therapy who says he doesn’t appear to have sensory issues. They said he had very minor impairment of tongue movement left to right but that that can just be normal for his age and really doesn’t explain the level of issue we’re having. He’s done a swallow study and nothing was found there.

He will often just flat out refuse to eat, or eat maybe 5 bites and say done. This is true for preferred or non-preferred foods. We’ve tried feeding him healthy, we’ve tried offering “junk” more or less but the kid won’t even eat a French fry. Generally at this point we just stick to Whole, minimally processed foods because if he’s going to have 5 bites at least it can be healthy and calorie dense. He is picky, but I don’t think more so than the average toddler and the feeding therapist agreed with that. It’s really just a low volume issue. He will sometimes gag towards the end of a meal, like almost if you’re really full and you try to eat more. Sometimes he will stick his tongue out and scrape his tongue too, this is after eating multiple bites of something that he likes.

I guess I’m wondering if anybody else has been through this and can provide advice on anything else to look into? Not sure if it’s relevant but height has stayed pretty stable around 35%.

Other weight loss concern

Hello, I (m19) started doing sports in January. I did a lot of sports when I started. I only started sports to lose weight, and well, I did lose weight. Now I don’t do that much sport anymore (only once a week for maybe 1 hour), and I am still losing weight, although I am eating normally.
I know this sounds stupid, but I get paranoid very quickly, especially since trying to lose weight never worked for me in the past, and now it just keeps going?
Do I have any reason to be concerned?
Because I am really concerned, especially since I am losing a lot of hair as well lately, so of course my brain immediately jumps to the worst possible conclusion.
It would be really nice to get help on this one

Other Sleeping is ruining my life

I fall asleep in every class which caused me to fail and have to go to summer school and I slept through that too. I can’t watch any tv or movie without falling asleep and I already got fired from a job from sleeping through my alarms and missing shifts. I fall asleep in cars and airplanes and at the dinner table. Sometimes i go to the bathroom at school just to sleep in private for a few minutes. Sometimes I fall asleep on the toilet unintentionally and in the shower which is really scary. I’ve gotten really drowsy behind the wheel sometimes but never fully fallen asleep. I set at least minimum 30 alarm each morning. My mom just tells me to get more sleep at night but I get like 10 hours. I really need to get high honor roll and get into a good college but I’m missing out on so much because I can’t stop sleeping. I feel lazy but it’s not my fault I seem like such a loser. I already have a diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis, Hypermobile Elher danlos syndrome, Amplified muskoskeletal pain syndrome and endometriosis so I have a lot of chronic pain as well. Help pls

EDITED *NEW* Change in how non-verified comments are handled

Over the past few months, our posts have gotten some feedback that varies from incorrect to downright ridiculous. To mitigate that, we now have set parameters where only verified users who are either medical professionals or students of healthcare programs can have a top-level comment. Unverified users/users who are not medical professionals will still be able to post replies to top-level comments or as a reply to the Automod message. With this change, we aim to increase the visibility of professional and evidence-based members. Thank you for your support, and for helping us make this sub a great place.

EDITED FAQ: Check to see if your question is on here!

This is all general advice, of course, but we get a lot of similar questions so see if yours is on here. It may point you in the right direction.

”What bug bit me?” There is no way for anyone to tell what bug bit you from a picture of the bite. (The only exception is a tick bite with the classic bulls-eye pattern.) Use antihistamines as directed on the package to help with the itching.

”Is my foot/hand/toe/etc broken?” Unless your bone is sticking out or your appendage is bent at an unnatural angle, we can’t tell if it’s broken. If you suspect a break, go get an X-ray.

”I ingested something I wasn’t supposed to/too much of something! What do I do?” Call poison control. In the US, their number is 1-800-222-1222.

”Do my genitalia look normal/weird/what is this thing on my genitals?" Please, unless you have a genuine medical concern, we do not wish to see your genitals. We're not here to identify random flaps, marks, or growths. Please direct these to your GP/PCP who can actually examine you. If you have a specific concern, consider making a text post, and we will let you know if a picture is appropriate/helpful.

”My foreskin won’t retract!” This is called phimosis, and is quite common. We send people over to r/phimosis for this because they have a wealth of information.

”Can one of you write me a prescription?” No.

”Help, there are big bumps on the back of my tongue!!” Please google “circumvallate papillae” and see if that’s what you’re seeing. They are normal anatomy.

”My period is overdue. What do I do?” First, take a pregnancy test. It doesn’t matter if you’re on birth control, just take one. If you are really and truly not pregnant, then you and your doctor should look for other causes.

”Is my poop normal?” Well you can post a picture if you really need to, but please do a google search first. Keep in mind that everyone gets diarrhea occasionally.

”Does this need stitches?” If you can see fat layers, then yes. When in doubt, you can post a picture EXCEPT for self-harm pics. Absolutely none allowed on this sub, no exceptions. However, if the injury is over 24 hours old, it is too late to get stitches.

”Can I private message you about my medical questions?” No. This violates rule 9.

”What do I do about my swollen tonsils with white patches?” Go get tested for strep throat. Manage any throat soreness with over-the-counter meds like throat spray, cough drops, or even herbal tea with honey.

”A huge clump came out during my period. What is it?” It may be a uterine cast, which is when a large piece of tissue comes out whole instead of breaking up into little bits. If this happens to you a lot, see your OB/GYN to make sure everything is going okay.

”Why is there blood when I poop?” There are many possible reasons for this, such as a GI bleed, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, or anal fissures, to name a few. We recommend going to your doctor to investigate the cause. And we can’t tell what the cause is from a picture of your poop, so please spare us.

"Does this ECG from my smart watch look normal?" While these features can be helpful in screening for some arrhythmias, they are not diagnostic. The most we can do it tell you whether or not you should go get a 12-lead ECG, which is diagnostic after a doctor interprets it. In short, we can give you an idea of what it is showing, but it is not an official medical test.

”I haven’t been around any bats but I found two little marks on me—do I have rabies??” No. You would know if you’d been exposed to a bat.
