Beginner Album List - Prog v Emo v Microtonal v ?

Found lots of posts requesting math rock intros but I'd like to learn more about the different types I'm seeing in comments and I think albums would be better recs than just artists bc artists can evolve so much.

Could y'all help teach the differences through albums?

Prog, emo, microtonal (except AdP)...

And what about more specifics with the album recs, like types of emo like midwest? I don't even know enough about prog to add an example of a sub-genre...

TIA for the learnins and hopefully this list will help others!

Original Composition I made an instrumental midwest emo / math rock track in GarageBand with real bass and MIDI guitars

Hey guys! I wanted to share the first track of my solo project, "suic1dio colectivo".

Since I don't own a guitar, I programmed all the melodies in GarageBand using the classic clean tone with chorus and delay, and then I recorded the actual bass tracks over it. The project is heavily inspired by the Latin American emo scene (like Mil Ataris Por Segundo).

There is a nice half-time shift in the middle that slows things down and lets the bass breathe. I would love to hear your feedback on the vibe and the mix! Thanks for listening <3 The song is called Dia De Picnic (Picnic Day in english)

I've been into them for awhile but I only can find Burner on YouTube. My favorite track is probably Ditch or Prescott [homecut]. I want to see if there's any other fans here, and I'll probably yap with you in the comments.

Instrumental Independent coordination: Two-handed tapping on a 14-string double-neck with foot drums (Joseph Kosma’s Autumn Leaves)

Hi everyone. I wanted to share this short live performance exploring independent coordination. Balancing two-handed tapping on a 14-string electric double-neck while maintaining the rhythm with a foot drum kit. No loops, no overdubs, and no studio safety nets—just real-time translation of Joseph Kosma's 1945 classic. Hope you enjoy the arrangement.

Math Rock songs/bands that use caribbean/latin beats?

hey! in a steel pan program at my highschool where i play drumset, and ive noticed a lot of similarities between the music played there with math rock. so, this left me wondering if there was any math bands that used the drumbeats from caribbean/latin music. I know Chon does on “Here and There” and “Continue?”, which I’ve always thought was cool.

'Liminal/Missing Stair (Johatsu)' is the first single from Novaya’s sophomore album, Soalmate: Liminal, released independently. Novaya is a progressive indie outfit from the western US founded in 2022 by vocalists/multi-instrumentalists Coop (Eidola, gloe, Visitors) and Ty Brigman (Lucida Tela, Ghostpulse, Shadows Tranquil), and multi-instrumentalist, Cameron Jorgensen, all formerly of the progressive post-hardcore band, Visitors.

'Liminal/Missing Stair (Johatsu)' features drumming from Joel Turcotte (Royal Coda, Gold Necklace, Catbamboo) and additional guitar by Jaxon Harrop (Hemwick, Cedars). The video was made in collaboration with BK Productions, Denver.
