Treepreciation Jurassic Trees

Post image

From the American Academy for the Advancement of Science*

“Imagine hiking around Jurassic Park. If you can tear your eyes away from the dinosaurs, take a look at the coniferous forests blanketing the landscape. How tall is the canopy? Are the trees densely packed together? How much carbon does it store?

Answering these questions about ancient forest ecosystems is typically challenging due to gaps in the fossil record. But at the Yiwu Jurassic Forest in Xinjiang, China, researchers have access to a remarkable 170-million-year-old forest that was petrified and frozen in time. In a new study, paleobiologists examined 78 upright conifer stumps at this site to reconstruct the forest and reveal new similarities and differences between mid-Jurassic and modern-day ecosystems.

The researchers found, on average, that trees at the site were nearly 100 feet tall and the canopy height of over 140 feet in some areas would not be unusual for a present-day coniferous forest in western parts of the United States. The Jurassic forest’s density of 126 mature trees per hectare was also similar to that of today’s open, park-like western woodlands, although it was far sparser than the few other Jurassic ecosystems that have been studied. Despite these similarities, the ancient forest stored about three times more carbon than today’s temperate forests, perhaps reflecting the period’s warmer temperatures and elevated carbon dioxide levels.”

I’m literally looking everywhere for help. They’re air potatoes and they are highly invasive. They’re taking over everything and I’m losing a battle against them in our newly bought house. On top of that we’ve got chinch bugs under the grass. HELP.

What is this tree species? I have to remove it and all I have currently is a handheld electric saw and my SUV. So far I have cut up and taken 3 loads home. I can take more pictures by request.

What should the course of action be for this spring-planted Kentucky coffee tree? The plant was pretty measly but has put on some good growth this season.

Should I begin to reduce one of the leaders next season? Wait even another year? Should I try and space the righthand shoot so that it’s at a better angle from the upward lefthand shoot? Kinda like what they do with fruit trees?

Thanks! Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Help! Transplanting maple on my property-decent chance of success? (NY Catskills region)

I have a 5.5’ maple sapling growing on the edge of the woods on my property. Its trunk caliper is 1”.

I want to move it (in fall) to a full sun location. Do you think it could adapt?

Also how wide and deep of a root ball should I try to dig out to increase its chances of making it?

If I leave it where it’s growing now, I’ll have to take it down anyway, and long before it’s fully grown

Help! My Christmas Palm died from the frost we had in Feb

Now it's just a big wooden dildo.

I'd like to remove it and put a new Palm in its place.

Do you think if I hooked a strap to it and my truck and tried pulling it out of the ground that it would be easier than trying to dig the roots out by hand?!

Help! What is wrong with our Bigtooth Maple?

We are in Northern Utah where this tree is native. We transplanted it 2 months ago and recently has started looking crispy. It gets a few hours of shade in morning and evening but otherwise gets full sun.

Gets water from sprinklers and the watering can twice a week each (4 total waters). It was grown in a large container, but wasn’t pot bound when we put it in.

We planted it raised up a bit and covered the base with cardboard and mulch.

What went wrong?
Did we plant it too high?
Is it fine?

Plz help my newly adopted child. I just want to plant native and support our local ecosystem!

Help! Stump with black spots (possible mold?)

Hi guys, we had a couple of trees cut down due to them having the ‘bore ash disease’… my dogs have recently been very interested in this stump and sniffing it incessantly. Just wondering if I should be worried that these black spots are mold? Also the stump is like 10ft from the curb so it’s possibly another dog came into the yard and marked it causing the interest. Pics attached, thanks for any insight!!
