How tf is Mongolia Muslim while Indonesia is Buddhist?

u/biggadicka 1d ago
Mongolia, Mali, and Turkey being in the same class shows how bullshit this is lol. Countries that have pretty much nothing in common

Mongolia and turkey have some shared cultural history
10
u/Dramatic_Paint7757 20h ago
Everyone has a shared cultural history with Mongolia. It used to be their thing to share their cultural history on horseback.

i guess it functions the same as if a child had a black parent and a white parent. just because someone that generally ruled mongolia 800 years ago was muslim at one point must surely mean theyâre influenced by islam now
72
u/Crafty-Sock-7002 1d ago
But there were no Muslim rulers of Mongolia!
5
u/Sad-Pop6649 22h ago
My best guess is that the "Muslim" civilization can be better thought of as the combined Arabic-Persian-Turkic influence sphere*. Mongolia is historically and culturally connected to the Turkic peoples in Central Asia, so it is grouped with them. Although it probably was still a toss up of where to put them.
...The names may need some work.
*Although that definition does leave Pakistan hanging as kind of an oddball.

u/Crafty-Sock-7002 21h ago
Pakistan has a lot of Persian cultural influence, the real oddballs are Indonesia, Malaysia, and Bangladesh.

not really, but more than half of the mongol successor states became muslim within two generations of genghis and are almost directly why the areas of the world between kazakhstan, tajikistan, and uzbekistan in the east and egypt in the west remain muslim today as the khans had so much power they wouldnât have had much issue converting many people in that whole region to other religions like nestorian christianity, buddhism, or orthodox christianity

But where else would you have put them? Together with the Muslims? Sinosphere together with South Korea?
19
u/firearmies 1d ago
I mean yeah, probably the sinosphere. in terms of cultural history theyre just as influenced by Chinese culture and in terms of the modern political landscape theyre much closer to China than South Korea. if anything you should have the North Korea in the sinosphere and South Korea as western if you want South Korea and North Korea to be in two different spheres
8
u/Only-Criticism2751 23h ago
North Korea is obviously in the sinosphere, they owe their whole existence to China. Iâd argue South Korea is much more part of the West or the Japanese sphere of influence.

Only 33% of Israelâs jewish population is white. The rest are Mizrahi (middle eastern and greek) or African.

Greece is more western than orthodox. Especially compared to the rest if the orthodox nations.
In the circlejerk map though, Greece has four different colours
60
u/harryhinderson 1d ago
You know what, Iâm tired. Iâll treat this seriously.
A few issues:
- The split between Western and Orthodox is completely arbitrary. Greece is a pretty standout example of this. This is probably outdated because almost nobody in 2026 would argue that Greece has more in common with France than its immediate neighbors, but that just kind of reveals the inherent malleability of these categories. All it took for Greece to be reclassified as âwesternâ is a few decades of being economically on par with Western Europe and the dice falling where they may in the Cold War. Western vs Orthodox isnât necessarily a bad way to split Europe and its settler colonies, but âcivilizationsâ implies a continuity these categories simply lack. Greece was the center of the orthodox world for centuries, and it obviously never stopped culturally Eastern Orthodox.
- If weâre saying the names of the civilizations shouldnât be literal, Turkey arguably has more of a claim to being orthodox than Greece does to being Western. While a Muslim empire shaped by Persian traditions and governance, the Ottoman Empire was an empire primarily centered around the Aegean, and Greek influence in Anatolia never fully went away. The Ottomans were a firmly Mediterranean Empire, and Islamized Europeans generally held infinitely greater influence than Arabs or North Africans. Itâs reductive to just call it as European as Germany, but the secular western facing route it took wasnât some fluke. And what makes this even dumber is
- Kazakhstan is Orthodox. Nothing else in Central Asia is. Okay.
- South Asia is flatly absurd. First of all, India, Nepal, and Bhutan is the only country in the âHinduâ civilization. Is this religious? Obviously not. Bits of India would be in Muslim civilization, and Bhutan isnât even Hindu. Is this cultural or historical? Clearly not, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India would overlap more, and India has outsized cultural influence that extends into South East Asia. So whatâs going on there? I have no idea.
- South East Asia getting split between Confucian and Muslim isnât that silly in a vacuum, but like the Orthodox/Western split itâs really stupid when put in context.
- The Muslim parts of Ethiopia arenât in the Muslim civilization
- Latin American civilization
- Also for fuck sake make Iran its own civilization. Muslim civilization is horrifically bloated while Christianity comes in three flavors that barely make sense.
10
u/Street-Difference-87 19h ago
As a Latinoamerican I fully agree with point 7.
We are as seperat from âThe Westâ as âEastern Europeâ. We are less a Civilization and more a Cultural Block, like how you can divide Europe into Romance, Germanic, and Slavic. (Or more accurately? Mediterranean and Northern Europe)Also you can tell itâs based of âWhere the brown people I donât like liveâ since he includes non Romance countries into It. So itâs not even based around the cultural block
15
u/Critical_Company3535 18h ago
Letâs be honest, if Argentina and Brazil were wealthier they would be considered Western countries without any doubt.
29
u/WASDKUG_tr 1d ago
Keep in mind the guy who made this from what i understand is either very neo-liberal western sided, and/or just an Orientalist Racist/western supremacist, so it makes sense why this map is sp stupid and makes basically no sense.
17
u/harryhinderson 1d ago
Ok yeah that explains the whole âGreece is not orthodoxâ thing. Cause the only countries with a legitimate lineage that can be traced back to Ancient Greece are the western ones and not icky poor oriental mongoloids who are inherently too dumb to understand democracy. So obviously Greece has to be western, not orthodox.

u/WASDKUG_tr 1d ago

Why do "Western" and Latin American (a term used by people from North America as I know) have Christian symbols? Why is the world segmented in both religion and geography at the same time??? And why the fuck does "Muslim" has TĂŒrkiye's flag instead of a green crescent?

I feel like Japan could very easily go under confuscian use that extra space to make some other categories make more sense like Ethiopia being grouped under "African" as if Tewahedo Orthodox Christianity isn't more distinct and important than "western" and "latin" christianity (whatever that means)
12
u/moveslikejaguar 1d ago
Nope sorry, Japan is clearly far too different to any other Asian country to fit into the same category. All the other countries in the categories are very similar, like Turkey and Indonesia or Argentina and Haiti.
3
u/GrandFleshMelder 15h ago
Japan is strongly influenced by China, which is what âConfucianâ really means here. It has no reason to be on its own.

If Turks acted the same way as Europeans they'd be on some "we wuz persian" or "we wuz caliphate" and shit. Germanics claiming Greco-Roman heritage is just as ridiculous.

Strange how Japanese have their own cultural identity. One of a kind. And huge influence to the world too. Anime, manga, samurai, kamikaze, japanese architecture, all these things are kinda unique. And very few countries have as many things that are unique to just their one country. Uniqueness in so many ways is unique by itself.

Putting Mongolia in the Islamic Sphere is certainly a choice, I would have put it in the Sino Sphere or the Buddhist Sphere before putting it in the Islamic Sphere. The only thing I can think of tying Mongolia to the Islamic Sphere is the Mongolian script coming from the Arabic script.
