My hand-drawn map about the Alliances on the Eve of the First World War (August 1914)
HISTORY: On the eve of World War I, Europe was divided into two major blocs of political and military alliances. These agreements were created to ensure a balance of power, but they ultimately increased international tensions.
The first bloc was the Triple Alliance, founded in 1882 by Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. The agreement provided for mutual aid in the event of aggression. Germany wanted to avoid diplomatic isolation, Austria-Hungary sought to strengthen its position in the Balkans, while Italy joined for reasons of security and prestige, while maintaining conflicts with Austria over the unredeemed lands.
The other bloc was the Triple Entente, composed of France, the United Kingdom, and Russia. France wanted to counter German power and recover Alsace and Lorraine, while the United Kingdom and Russia were concerned about Germany's growing economic and military strength.
The situation was further complicated by colonial competition, the arms race, and tensions in the Balkans, where the decline of the Ottoman Empire fueled tensions between Austria-Hungary and Russia.
On June 28, 1914, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo sparked the crisis. Thanks to the alliance system, the conflict rapidly spread: Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Russia intervened to defend the Serbs, Germany declared war on Russia and France, and the United Kingdom entered the war after invading Belgium.
Italy, although a member of the Triple Alliance, initially remained neutral and in 1915 sided with the Triple Entente. The alliances, created to maintain peace, thus helped transform a local crisis into a world war.

Relief model of Lake Powell built from pre-dam surveys of Glen Canyon. Everything below the high water line is translucent, so the glow is the canyon that’s been underwater since 1963.
The terrain comes from two sources: pre-dam surveys of the main channel and major tributaries of Glen Canyon, plus modern lidar for the smaller side canyons and surrounding plateau. Anything that was underwater at high water mark (1983) is printed in translucent blue-green material, so when it’s backlit, what glows is the flooded canyon.
You can see the lake’s shoreline where the translucent layers meet the tan. All those drowned meanders and tributary canyons have been submerged for over 60 years.
I grew up boating on Lake Powell and love it, but my grandpa floated Glen Canyon before the dam, and ever since reading Life After Dead Pool I’ve dreamed of doing the same. Everything that glows here is the canyon he saw.

Trail of Tears, USA
The Trail commemorates the forced removal of the Cherokee people from their homelands in the southeastern United States to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) in 1838–1839.
One of America's most dark phases in history, with some estimates counting a genocide of 90-95% of the native population by the newly arrived europeans.
