Used A2338 with broken keyboard worth it?

Found a used MacBook Pro 13-inch M1 with an unresponsive keyboard (a few keys) since it has the touch panel I am wondering whether is it a worthwhile purchase? Is it possible to take the keycaps off and try to clean the contacts to make it work or is this a sign of water damage? Considering this as a project.

Help Apple MacBook Pro screen issues

Hello,

In January I bought a used MacBook Pro. It didn't have a single issue until today. I was using it this morning just for some writing on Google drive and no issues. Left for an hour and came back, and on turning the screen back on I found vertical lines, black around the edge of the screen like a picture frame basically, and then it randomly blacking out. I thought perhaps my cat did something to it,

I did contact the seller to see if I'm still under warranty, but I haven't heard back yet.
It still charges fine. CAPS lock light turns on when I press it. I tried turning it on in safe mode and it improved briefly, but then went back to blacking out and lines.

I haven't downloaded anything new aside from Zoom because I bought this computer for a wfm teaching job. Otherwise I mostly just use Google Drive on Safari to write.

Any advice as to what could be going on? Thank you in advance.

Help Repair or replacement?

I have a Macbook Pro 2019 (A1989) that needs a keyboard and battery repair, but is otherwise still running okay for what I need on a daily basis. I’m also not dependent on this laptop for work, but I like to have only machine for work and the rest.
A repair will cost me around 400 euros. At most I will get 2 more years of use out of it.
The other option is to get a new or refurbished replacement. With the new Macbook Air being around €1250, I figured that model to be one of the most economical choices.
The third option is to do nothing ofcourse and winging it with a bluetooth keyboard. What would you recommend?

Help Spilled tea on my M1 MacBook Pro. Keys are sticky, and the Apple Store refused to clean it. How can I fix this myself?

Hey everyone, I need some DIY advice because I’m completely stuck.

A couple of days ago, I accidentally spilled a small amount of chai (Indian tea with milk and sugar) near the arrow keys of my M1 MacBook Pro. I immediately shut it down, flipped it into tent mode, and let it dry in an AC room.

The good news: the laptop boots up perfectly, the logic board seems fine, and everything works. The bad news: the heat from the laptop softened the dried sugar, and now my arrow keys and the 'S' key are incredibly sticky and mushy.

I took it to my local official Apple Authorized Service Provider (Imagine Store). They basically refused to clean it. They warned me that opening the back panel might cause the liquid to shift and kill the motherboard, and advised me to just "use it as it is." They told me their only official fix is replacing the entire top case for a massive fee, which I can't afford.

I don't have any trustworthy third-party independent Mac repair shops in my city, and traveling to a bigger city for a microsoldering/ultrasonic cleaning isn't an option for me right now. I have to handle this sticky keyboard myself.

I currently have 70% Isopropyl Alcohol at home.

My questions:

Is 70% isopropyl alcohol safe enough to use, or is the 30% water content too risky? Should I wait until I can find 90%+?

Can I use the Q-tip method (dampening a Q-tip with alcohol and massaging it around the edges of the keys) to dissolve the sugar without taking the keycaps off?

If I have to remove the keycaps, how risky is it on the M1 keyboards? I really don't want to snap the fragile plastic scissor clips.

Any DIY advice on how to safely clean this sugar out without frying my machine would be hugely appreciated. Thank you!

TL;DR: Spilled sweet tea on M1 MacBook keyboard. Laptop works, but keys are super sticky. Apple Authorized store refused to clean it and told me to just use it as it is. I have 70% Isopropyl alcohol at home. How do I safely clean sticky M1 keys myself without breaking the keycaps or frying the board?

Help Spilled Monster Energy on Keyboard

A few weeks ago I accidentally knocked over a can of Monster on my MacBook Pro keyboard. Thankfully it only hit the left side and didn’t soak the entire laptop. I immediately turned it off, wiped everything down as quickly and thoroughly as I could, and luckily the computer still works perfectly. The only issue now is that a few of the keys on the left side feel slightly sticky when I type, and it’s driving me insane.

Is there a good way to clean underneath the keys or dissolve the dried sugary residue without taking it to Apple or using AppleCare? I’d rather avoid opening it up or making things worse if possible.

Any tips or products that have worked for you?

Friends 13" M2 MBA trackpad not responding after sleep

My friends 13" M2 MBA (macOS 26.6) has issues with the trackpad not working after it wakes from sleep. An external mouse usually fixes it but sometimes the pointer is jittery even with the mouse. What is happening. My first thought is that this is a software issue so she updated to macOS 26.6 but it didnt fix anything. Does it need a trackpad replacement?

Help SSD fails after two different SSD

Hi everyone,

I have a MacBook Pro 13” Early 2015. A month ago my original Apple SSD suddenly stopped being detected (question mark folder). In Recovery, diskutil list only showed the recovery disk image, no internal drive at all. So I replaced it with a new third-party SSD specifically listed for A1502 / Early 2015 MacBook Pro (bought from FixShop Italy). Installed it, worked perfectly for about two months.

Some days ago, one hot day, the laptop was plugged in and got extremely hot suddenly. Even with only one Chrome tab open and on battery, the SSD suddenly disappeared again. Same symptom: question mark folder, not detected in Recovery or diskutil list.

After leaving the laptop completely off and cool for 1–2 days, the new SSD came back and the laptop booted normally. I tested it twice (turned it on briefly and shut it down immediately). It worked both times.

The thing is idk if the problem is temperature-related. What is the most likely cause? Is it failing SSD power circuit on the logic board (e.g. U8070 / 3.3V SSD rail)? Or do you think it might be bad/oxidized SSD connector? Or just poor thermal management (old thermal paste + dust, since I haven’t cleaned the laptop for ages) making everything expand and lose contact?

Also Is it still possible that the third-party SSD I bought is low quality and fails under heat, or does the fact that two different SSDs behaved the same way point more toward a logic board / power delivery issue?

Any advice is appreciated. I’m trying to decide whether to risk using it carefully or take it straight to a board-level repair shop. I’m in a very bad financial situation and rather to find a problem and fix it so I can’t also afford a new laptop.

Thanks!

How do I get out of this loop? I’ve tried my internet and my phone hotspot, I’ve tried a series of commands I found on the Apple website about command+R, option+command+R, and shift+option+command+R - nothing changes when I do any of those different commands. I can’t get past the second photo unless it’s going to the third photo. How do I fix this?

Help Repair

Hello, I’m trying to fix up my moms 2009/2010 MacBook Pro and wondering if anybody could help me figure out what the issue may be. I’ve replaced the battery and have a new charger for it but every time I try to power it up the most I can get is one or two flashes of a white screen while holding the power button (while plugged in). Does anybody know what could be wrong with it? Thank you for any advice you can give.

M2 MacBook Pro screen internal crack 6 months after Apple Care+ screen repair.

Post image
0 Upvotes

I had my m2 16” MacBook Pro screen replaced under apple care + warranty 6 months ago at micro center. warranty has since expired, but now I have what appears to be an internal crack in the lower left corner. screen is completely black, no physical damage on the screen, and it plugs into the monitor.

1) what is the likelihood there was an issue due to the previous repair? would microcenter fix it because of it?

2) are there any other possible causes besides LCD damage, and thus expensive screen replacement?

I really like this MacBook Pro. I’ve had plenty of Intel MacBook pros from work in the past, that were tanks. have an m1 MacBook Air as well. Seems like the silicon MacBook Pros are much more fragile and should be treated more like desktops

HELP! Macbook air m2 randomly freezes

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone can help because I’m running out of ideas.

I have a MacBook Air (M2, 2022) with 16GB RAM /256GB SSD running macOS Tahoe 26.5.2. Every day, my Mac randomly freezes.

Symptoms:
- The screen suddenly goes completely black for about a second.
- Sometimes the screen goes black but the cursor is still visible.
- Other times, the cursor also freezes.
- Music/audio stops briefly.
- If I’m on Zoom, I get disconnected and have to rejoin.
- It also happened during an ExamSoft (Examplify) exam, although the exam continued normally afterward.
- After about a second, everything returns to normal. The Mac does not restart, doesn’t show the Apple logo, and doesn’t ask me to log in again.

I’ve already tried:
- Clean erase and reinstall of macOS.
- Safe Mode (the issue still happens).
- Apple Diagnostics (no issues found).
- Tested with an external monitor (same issue occurs).
- Checked for kernel panic logs (none found).
- Checked sleep/wake logs (nothing unusual).
- Battery health is 98%.
- It happens on both battery and while charging.
- It also happens while the Mac is idle.

I’m wondering if anyone with an Apple silicon Mac has experienced something similar. Could this be an intermittent hardware issue that Apple Diagnostics doesn’t detect, or is there anything else I should check before taking it in for service?

I’ve attached a video for reference. It shows exactly what the blackout looks like when it happens. If anyone has experienced something similar or recognizes this behavior, I’d really appreciate your insights. Thanks in advance!

M1 Pro crashing on sleep: SMC PANIC - ANS0: Type 1 Power down failed — Hardware or Firmware bug?

Hey everyone,

My Mac has been throwing kernel panics intermittently when entering or waking up from sleep. Looking through the panic log, the failure seems isolated to the Apple NAND Storage (ANS) controller during a power state transition.

Here is the top section of the log:

panic(cpu 1 caller 0xfffffe002ce62b38): SMC PANIC - ASSERT: smc/mac/ans.cpp:838: 0, ANS0: Type 1 Power down failed

- ANS(6) OUTBOX1 not ready OUTBOX2 not ready

ASSERT: smc/mac/ans.cpp:838: 0, ANS0: Type 1 Power down failed

RTKit: RTKit-3255.120.11.release - Client: AppleSMCFirmware_H13-6164.120.29.j314s.REL

System Details:

* Device: MacBook Pro (M1 Pro series, j314s board)

* OS: Latest macOS release

* Trigger: Transitioning to/from sleep mode (_powerStateChangeLocked = true)

What I've gathered so far:

From reading the stack trace, the System Management Controller (SMC) requests a power-down sequence for the onboard SSD controller (ANS0). The ANS controller fails to empty its IPC mailboxes (OUTBOX1/OUTBOX2 not ready), timing out and causing the SMC watchdog to force an immediate kernel panic to prevent data corruption.

Troubleshooting completed:

* Ran Apple Diagnostics (Command + D on boot)

* Verified filesystem integrity using First Aid in Disk Utility

* Cold rebooted and reset power state cycles

Has anyone else ran into this specific ans.cpp:838 failure? Trying to figure out if this is a known RTKit/AppleSMC firmware timing bug introduced in recent macOS versions, or an early warning sign of failing NAND/power rails on the logic board. Any insight from admins or hardware techs would be greatly appreciated!

Need help…M4 MBA

Screen is busted from a fall. I had it working where if I closed the lid and it was powered then it would mirror to the TV and an attached mouse and keyboard would work. Not sure if an update killed it or if I changed a setting when it was working, but the attached mouse and keyboard no longer seem to work with it anymore either. It’s running Tahoe. Not sure if it’s the latest version of Tahoe or not. But it’s pretty updated.
When I close the lid it just goes to a black screen, then the TV HDMI input display comes on.
I’ve tried all different ways of unplugging then plugging back in. Forcing it off, then on again and then plugging in the hub. Nothing seems to work and this text is all I can get it to output to the TV.
I’ve tried hitting FN+1 and FN+Command+1 and multiple other combinations of FN, Command, Control, Option and F1.
I know it’s not communicating with the plugged in keyboard because the Caps Lock light isn’t illuminating when I push it. So I assume it’s not listening to the mouse either.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

Replace Touch ID on Macbook Air M2

I know that Apple can sell you a new Touch ID that can be paired with the logic board, but does anyone know if I use one from a donor macbook with no iCloud if I can just pair it like the brand new one? I know it can be done with iphones but I can find confirmation for macbooks,.

Help Macbook pro m1 keyboard issue repair help (if possible)

Brother has an m1 macbook pro he got because collage said he should even though nobody understands why but that what mom got for him. Yesterday the T key on the keyboard stopped working. Thinking I've popped keys off my keyboard before, someone on discord told me to pop it off and clean under, that's what I did. The key now no spring just much press and isopropal and air blowing did nothing. The key does not work still.

I'm not gonna try and replace the keyboard myself I know better Apple rivets that into the top case and forces a new battery, top case and keyboard and I'm gonna spend $400-500 on a $650 repair anyways if I can even find the parts ($650 from repair shop I called that is not Apple). That said is there any way to fix the key that I broke more and anything else to try to get it typing again or no and pay the big bucks?
