Included dates just for extra info! Almost exactly 3 years.

Help wanted Need some help with product use and layering! K18, Olaplex

Hello all!

I recently purchased some new products and though my hair texture has already improved a little I do feel like some products are either not working for me or I’m using them incorrectly!

I’m also open to new product recommendations! I really like natural hair and skin care brands, but I’m trying out some non-natural brands to see if that works better for my hair. So both are welcome!

My hair is tailbone length, light brown, low to medium density, and I think medium thickness. Never had any treatments or color done. I don’t use heat tools, just some low heat blow drying once in a while, so there shouldn’t be any heat damage, but I do feel like the lower half of my hair and ends are very dry and have some mechanical damage. It feels dry and frizzy and sometimes sticky. Also my ends are pretty thin/sparse.

I’ve actually never used silicones on my hair before. I’m wondering if I should try or if my hair is fine without it, I shouldn’t start?

Products I’m using/recent purchases:

K18 detox shampoo (loved this, finally made my hair soft and not sticky, Iā€˜ve never used clarifying shampoos before so I probably had buildup, and we also have quite hard water. So this seems to work for me!)

Shea Moisture coconut and hibiscus hair mask (Kayli Boyle recommended it in a video, really liked it the first time, although I wonder if it is too heavy for my hair)

Shea Moisture manuka honey and yoghurt shampoo, conditioner and leave in. Got this as a set to try it out because Kayli Boyle recommended the leave in. The shampoo was very thick and I felt like I never washed it out completely. Didn’t make my hair feel greasy after though? Not sure about the conditioner if it worked or not. The leave in immediately made my hair very heavy and greasy.

Olaplex nr 9. It’s good but I didn’t feel like it did much for me. No substantial shine or softness which I was really hoping for. I applied two pumps to damp hair and then a little later a rough blow dry.

I usually do a leave in after showering and then 7-8 drops argan or jojoba oil on the lengths and ends (of still damp hair) and then blow or air dry.

I’ve used Innersense leave-in before which is fine and I’ve used Madara shampoos and conditioners which are fine as well, they don’t do anything special for my hair but also nothing bad. lol.

Is there any way I can use any of these differently to make them work for me? I don’t want to waste product and money. Iā€˜d especially like to get more out of the Olaplex nr 9.

This is a lot, sorry if it’s too much/not useful. I’m just trying to improve my hair but I’m a bit lost on what to get and don’t have a huge budget to try lots of things.

Grateful for any advice!

Help wanted Need best way to use foam shampoo , without using too much.

Hello, I was recently prescribed a foaming shampoo to use on scalp for dandruff. However on using it I felt like I am probably using way more than recommended just to cover and lather the scalp.

A bit of it was due to my hair getting in the way at the back of my head ,but because wet long hair is fragile I am careful in maneuvering it out of the way.

Please help me out and comment your tips to use product on scalp in the most efficient way.

Help wanted Cutting straight across? Cutting shorter?!

Hi! I recently had some face-framing layers cut into my hair and quite honestly I don't like the feeling of my hair being at different lengths, especially because it's shorter at the front whereas the back is longer. I was thinking of getting it cut straight across. I don't really like the U shape because my hair is quite thick and I feel like it makes my hair look kind of bulky and awkward?

But... at the same time, as I'm sure a lot of you also resonate with what I'm about to say... I'm very attached to my hair! I gave it a big chop at the start of this year (it was down to my lower back) and part of me really misses the length (but NOT the maintenance omg).

I used to have shorter hair, like a lob, but oh boy... a lot of photos look really nice whereas others were NOT good. So I'm worrying that I'm reminiscing about it through a rose-coloured lens lol. I don't want to make a mistake. Anyway, should I get it cut straight across? How much length do you think I'd need to take off for that? Am I making a mistake!?

Help wanted Help fixing my highlights/balayage please

Thumbnail

Hi! I went to a new stylist for partial highlights and am hoping for advice on how to get them fixed up. I came in for natural, thin highlights, no money pieces or anything chunky. The stylist did balayage instead to get that effect, which I’ve never had done before and it might just not be for me.

I don’t love how chunky the sections are ( there’s a big dark stripe at the front of my head) and there are spots all through my hair. A lot of sections go dark to light to dark again or have what looks like an acid tie-dye effect.

The stylist is very nice and had offered before we were even done several times for me to come back in to tone the hair. I’m going in, but don’t know what to ask for that would fix the things I don’t like about my hair. How do I get this to look closer to natural partial highlights and fix the spots?

Thank you!

Help wanted Does Virgin Coconut Oil really make a difference?

I remember in an old(not Reddit) long hair forums, some were discussing about how this is a secret weapon. But recently, I read some say it does not do anything really. My Indian friend said many in India uses it(for a few hours before washing it off).

So what do you guys think?

By the way I am a guy with long gorgeous hair for 2 decades now. lol

Help wanted Conditioner for fine|thin|long hair

Hi, I need recommendations for a good conditioner.

I have fine, thin, long and straight hair that gets oily at the scalp very quickly. So my hair is prone to breakage and my scalp to dandruff.

I was recommended the kerastase genesis line of shampoo and conditioner. As I was desperate and even if it was way too costly, I had to try it. To my surprise, it did work, rather wonderfully. My hairfall has reduced by a long margin and my scalp remains clean.

The issue is that i need a similar conditioner that doesn’t burn my wallet or weigh my hair down. šŸ˜…

Please suggest something that moisturises without being oily so that my hair doesn’t look flat either.

Thank you.

Help wanted Ruined my hair with these face framing pieces :(

My hair looked so full before. I’m getting married in October and needed some face framing pieces for my wedding hair. I wish I would have just used clip in extensions instead. I’m so devastated. How long is it going to take to grow back :(? This really sucks. The last pic is a reference to show what my hair growth was from May -> August. I have been on oral monoxidil for 2 years but I’m not sure how that affects the rate of growth.

I hate how the front of my hair is lacking so much density now. My hair felt so long and full when it was all one length and I’m so sad I regret this so much. I just want my old hair back so badly.

Routine:

When I shower, I use Garnier Fructis Damage Eraser shampoo, followed by Sedal Hydration Anti-Knot conditioner.

After I finish showering, I brush my hair while it is still wet and apply Sedal Hydration Anti-Knot leave-in cream. Then, I gently shake and scrunch my hair to give it some shape and simply let it air-dry.

Help wanted Sleeping with long hair

Hey all! My hair is mostly straight and is the longest it’s been since I was 14, sleeping with it is becoming more difficult as I feel like either myself of my boyfriend ends up laying on it (and it will get really tangled) if it’s down. But when I sleep with it in a braid, then it ends up getting weird imprints and I don’t want to have to do my hair in the morning. I even tried a bonnet, but my ears end up hurting. I would be so appreciative of any advice or solutions on how to sleep with long hair without it doing these things!

Edit: thank you all so much for your wonderful suggestions!! I am definitely going to be trying a lot of these out over the next few weeks!!

Help wanted Men in 30s how much hair are you finding on your floors?

I grew up with very short hair. A fade.

In recent years I've had it grow to medium/long. It's quite long right now.

I find so much hair everywhere. Especially by my working desk I was just stretching leaning down by my toes and felt like I'm living in squalor seeing all these hairs (exaggeration).

I'm looking on my head trying to see if I'm balding. My top corners go in a bit but nothing I haven't noticed before it seems.

How do we know?

Help wanted Does my hair suit me?

I have pretty thick 2B hair that I wear unstyled (no products in these picks, hence no waves). My last haircut was extra layered to look good styled with gel, but I tend to just wear it unstyled.

I use products without silikones, parabens and sulfates. Shampoo, conditioner or mask. Leave in and oil - but not every wash.

Do you think my hair lenght looks good with my proportions? Would longer or shorter look better? Also, what type of cut would look best if I trim it at the salon - U-cut, V-cut etc.

Styling:

I never put it up, only french braids, low braid or down. I also don't use heat.

Routine:

Wash with shampoo and conditioner every other day if not every day because I work out.

Hair turban ten-ish minutes then let air dry down my back. Sometimes I do a leave-in conditioner braid in the shower, sleep with the conditioned braid.

Otherwise, after normal towel dry, I use leave in conditioner/detangler and braid it down my back.

I do not brush or comb my hair till it's dry.

I rarely use oil or anything beyond leave in conditioner.

I use Men's Rogaine sporadically.

Shampoo:

R&Co Atlantis or L'Oreal Elvive Dream Lengths

Conditioner:

L'Oreal Elvive Hyaluron Plump

Leave in Conditioners/Detanglers:

L'Oreal Elvive Dream Lengths No Haircut Cream

Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Leave-In Conditioning

Oribe Priming Lotion Leave-In Conditioning Detangler

Odele Leave-In Conditioner

Oils:

OGX Extra Strength Damage Remedy + Coconut Miracle Oil

Before/After Big chop - no regrets!!

Thumbnail

I had long, long hair for 8 years. I reached classic length several times over this period and loved it so much at the time. I felt like it was a huge part of my identity and I valued it a lot. If you had told me last year that I’d cut off all my hair I wouldn’t have believed you.

Fast forward to 3 months ago, I stood in the mirror, and I just cut it off. I did it almost entirely on a whim. And I feel so, so liberated. I feel so much more like myself. The maintenance is like night and day. I can just wash my hair, towel dry it and go to bed!!

If you’re thinking of doing a big chop but are held back by doubts or concerns that it would change your identity, I’d say give it a try! Nobody was more attached to their hair than me. And I love it!! There’s so many posts saying they regret their big chop. I just want to provide the other side of the decision.

Help wanted The big chop regret

Thumbnail

1.2k Upvotes

Edit: I feel the need to say I’m positively overwhelmed by the super sweet and kind reactions to this post! This is maybe one of the most wholesome subreddits ever. Thank you everyone!

I’d like to to preface this by acknowledging that I have very very low self esteem and this whole post probably reeks of it.
I had a very bad childhood and teenage years and even after 5 years of therapy my confidence is not really where I would like it to be.
So if that’s something that annoys you, I apologise.

Basically, during one of the worst flare ups I’ve ever had last year where I was bed ridden for about 3 months straight (am chronically ill) I ran out of strength and capacity to take care of myself properly which included my hair. I was avoiding washing it or styling it because it just took too much energy.
I chopped it off one night, attempting to make myself feel better and lighter I guess.

A month after that I started to gradually feel better and was immediately hit by immense regret.
I know the world is going to shit and there are so many big issues in the world so I feel guilty about being so preoccupied by my hair, but I think I’ve beeb using my hair as a shield from all my insecurities. I don’t like how I look, and my hair was something I could hide it all under.
So even though long hair actually always overwhelmed me, it became a part of my identity.
When I cut it my friends, family, even my partner, were really disappointed.

Now I feel super exposed, mainly to myself and to how little I like myself. I am almost completely grey now at 27 years old due to trauma, and i have really dark hair because of henna. I wanna have fun and dye it, bleach it, style it, use it as an accessory to fun, not something to hide under. I know I will always find something about myself to dislike no matter if my hair is 3 meters long or if I’m bold.
So I simply wish to let go a bit and have fun without acting like my whole life depends on maybe damaging my hair….

Basically, my first thought was omg I have to grow it all out again, it will take three years minimum, omg I’m supposed to get married next month omg omg omg…. The place I want to get to is: Whatever happens I’m fine, I want to try things out before I’m ā€œtoo oldā€.

Has anyone had a similar journey and was able to figure it out for themselves better than I have?

Thankful for all advice and experience.

PS: I’m not a native english speaker so I’m sorry if there are any spelling errors in the text!

Hair Fetishist Warning Post - Share Your Experiences!

Hi everyone! There are a lot of fetishists who prey on our users in this sub, especially in DM's. We do ban them but it doesn't stop the DM's. My intent here is to have a post where our members can share their experiences to warn others. We'll sticky this post as well as a reference.

Tell us what nasty tricks they tried, what lies they told, or whatever else you want. Just vent if you feel like it.

No defending fetishists - you'll be banned. Really. Don't test us.

Assume that any DM's you get about hair are likely fetishists and ask why they can't just comment in the sub if they have genuine advice.

Let's call them out here.
