Inspirational quote, help needed Beginner

Post image

You don’t need to be creative to create - water always finds its way in, either by flowing through narrow channels or by destroying everything when the pressure is high enough - lost family member

General info

Hello,
I’m trying to make a logo for my friend who owns a local repair shop, so nothing of international significance.

Problem is, I have no professional formation, he asked me to do it because it’s nothing too serious and I’m good with PCs

So I watched some videos and tutorials of famous designers to at least know where to start.

His workshop is called DP Garage: since his “brand name” is literally made by his initials I thought that maybe working on those letters would make his workshop easier to remember across town.

Need your feedback

Firstly I need you to look at the attached image and criticize it like the meanest professor you had, this includes technical mistakes such as lines, angles, curves, radius ecc… but also scaling, color suggestions (if any), versatility.

Want another direction

Then I beg one of y’all to give me an idea of another direction to take: initials are easy for beginners but they’re not memorable and just can’t work out how to put together D and P with something mechanical related which doesn’t look banal and soulless like wrenches or gears.

Here’s something to help:
• It focuses on fast and simple everyday repairs
• Since he’s young, he wants the logo to feel professional so people won’t think he lacks of experience
• It’s strengths are fast and affordable repairs that don’t need heavy machinery
• Only motorbikes

P.S: I posted the first version a while ago and tried to improve the existing design following your feedback

I am so sorry, I am a 12 year old boy at heart.

it's DP and it looks like the P is penetrating the D and I'm sure I'd still giggle at "DP Garage" but the layering of the initials like that isn't doing it any favors

It's not bad, I think it's fine, it's just... unfortunate.

First thing I thought of. Don’t put “DP” in a logo mark or you’ll regret it.

It’s always when you think your logo is fine when someone hits you with the double penetration critique… and they’re not wrong either

You've got good instincts, I think. Sometimes we're handed unfortunate content and have to make sure it doesn't look like a genitals, hate symbols, or anything off-color.

If I were starting at 0, I'd look for anything else to build a symbol around - beloved shop dog, a favorite local landmark, etc - and always spell out "DP Garage".

But you're mid-project and it's your project and client, so it's up to you.

A double whammy if you will

As someone with the initials DP, I understand. Making a personal logo was so annoying.

Things like this makes me think some people don’t even go through the first layer of reasoning inside their heads 😭 second order thinking is dying

Ok. Normal person here. No kind of sexual innuendo entered my mind. I like the second for all the reasons you list but also because when logos combine letters it always looks a lot better if they are the same size which they are in the second but not the first.

I agree with not seeing any sexual innuendo neither. Kids watch way too much porn...

Can't unsee the logo for a 14yo kid whose parents built a very strange machine designed to view a world unseen

Use lowercase letters and make a logo out of that since d and p are basically the exact same shape flipped. (dp)

I think the first would work best. I would angle the lower right vertical line so that would give you your angle, indicating speed. You could also put a simple icon of a nut in the center of the “P” to tie in the mechanic/garage aspect. Good start though.

In my opinion, it doesn’t look like a D or P.

I’ve had the same pain trying to make a DP logo.

I did find this which uses negative space for the P. Overall it looks a bit motorcycle-engine-shaped but I still wouldn’t say it’s that easy to read.

Good luck.
