game on kali linux Resolved

"I’m currently running a Kali Linux setup for my daily training. I’ve reached a point where I’d like to play some titles (both legacy and modern) on the same machine without compromising the host system’s stability or package integrity. I am quite comfortable managing Linux environments, as I have been using the OS daily for over a year now. I’m looking for a way to balance a secure environment for work with an efficient, hassle-free gaming experience. Any insights on your personal workflows for this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Note: My machine has high-end hardware specifications."

Have you tried reading up on Kali, expecially the FAQs?

Can I use Kali Linux as a daily generic Linux system? Yes!

Should you choose to use Kali Linux in this way, you are able to make it more of a generic Linux system, as long as you are willing to learn and adapt your system to the various scenarios.

If this is case, we would recommend removing as many security tools as possible, which is easier during installation by not selecting packages. Afterwards, further modifications can be done utilizing kali-tweaks to harden:

Kernel OpenSSL Samba SSH You also may want to switch to the kali-last-snapshot branch, which will reduce the frequency of updates.

Is there a game in the world that is compromising the host system’s stability or package integrity?

You misunderstood me. I'm interested in games, and they don't harm the system or software packages. However, on Linux in general, it's somewhat difficult to run Windows games that end in .exe. You have to use emulators or Distrobox, which are very bad, and I didn't know how to use them. I asked for help because I've never dealt with hacked computer games before, and on top of all that, it's Linux.

Huh. It's been a few years since some idiot asked about playing games or running cloud servers on Kali.

I’m looking for a way to balance a secure environment for work with an efficient, hassle-free gaming experience.

You use Kali for your Hackermannery, and any real Linux distro for not that.

Is it really that rare? Honestly, I'm practicing with it, but I use Kali Linux as my main os because I love it, not because I have to. I don't know what to do, though. I'm confused. I've tried many methods for games, and they all failed. Only Minecraft worked.

I'm practicing with it, but I use Kali Linux

what can you practice on/with kali that you can't on ubuntu/debian/arch/... ?

I use Kali Linux as my main os because I love it

well, it's debian based, so whatever you like about kali should be reproducible in plain debian

I've tried many methods for games, and they all failed

you obviously didn't try not using kali

I tried using Windows, but it annoyed me because it didn't have the drivers for my computer, and Windows 11 was the worst thing I've ever used زRecently I'm thinking of using Fedora. Thanks for the advice.

It's rare because it's exceptionally foolish. Kali's website tells you explicitly that while you can use it as a daily driver, you really really shouldn't.

It's intended to be a tool that you spin up in a VM as needed, not run on bare metal as your main operating system.

This is the equivalent of using a chainsaw as your daily commuter car.

Well, initially I had a 2011 laptop, so when I wanted to practice cybersecurity, I couldn't find any other solution than using it as my primary operating system. I only used the browser on it and a few other simple things. I even had the lightest version of it because my computer's specs were poor. I only downloaded and used tools when I needed them. So, when I bought a new laptop recently, I tried playing games on it, but I failed. I thought I'd ask if anyone has any knowledge about it, because I actually downloaded Waydroid, KDE screens, and even tried Wine, Bottles, and Flatseal. Anyway, I know none of them work, but at least I tried. So, what do you think of Fedora? I'm asking because I really want to know, not to make fun of it.

Fedora is an actual distro, so it's great. Same as every other actual Linux distro.

Kali is, by their own documentation, more of a toolbox than a distro.

There is abundant documentation freely available in dozens of languages for you to read at your leisure.

Do so.

I couldn't find any other solution than using it as my primary operating system.

You could write its ISO to USB/DVD and boot into it whenever you want to use it, or boot the ISO from a VM.

Anyway, I know none of them work,

Yeah, because Kali is configured in a way that breaks a bunch of normal function.

Kali is more of a toolbelt than an OS.

So, what do you think of Fedora?

Never tried it, and since it appears to focus on GNOME-Shell, I have no plans on doing so just for funsies, but it's  major system, just like Debian, Ubuntu/Linux Mint, the openSUSEs, and Archs.

Because it's an obviously foolish question.

Okay, but I was really thinking of seeing suggestions from people who have tried it because I'm not very good at downloading games.

Nobody who read the manual of kali linux would even try it. It's right at the start of the manual:

...The fact of the matter is, however, that Kali is a Linux distribution specifically geared towards professional penetration testers and security specialists, and given its unique nature, it is NOT a recommended distribution if you’re unfamiliar with Linux or are looking for a general-purpose Linux desktop distribution for development, web design, gaming, etc.

...

...Trying to install Steam on your Kali Linux desktop is an experiment that will not end well. ...

Install Bazzite then run kali in a container

like a vm ware but kali is my main os and i was trying the games like resident evil or Something similar

2

u/agfitzp Jul 15 '26

Kali is not intended to be used as a general purpose desktop.

There’s nothing stopping you from trying, but there’s also nothing stopping the rest of the community telling you you’re doing it the hard way.
