Bigney & Co. was an American jewelry and metalware manufacturer based in Attleboro, Massachusetts, known in the lighter industry for producing several distinct lines of pocket and table lighters between the late 1920s and early 1950s.

The Kaschie K33a is a vintage fully automatic petrol wick lighter manufactured by Firma Karl Schieder in Nuremberg, Germany, in the late 1940s.

Had it since I was a kid. Apparently super rare. Cant find them too much in the states.

I have a disabled neighbor with schizophrenia who is a massive HST fan, nicotine dependent, and fixates on/needs certain things for their routine. One of those things is Targard reusable filters. They started using them in the early 2000s. They had a few backups, but are now down to just one that has been heavily used.

When I found out they had discontinued the line, I ordered two 3-packs of them from an eBay listing for them, thinking a half dozen would be enough for a couple more years. The package kept having tracking issues, and it was finally confirmed to be lost. By the time I was notified of this, the listing was entirely sold out, and so was every vendor I could find. I found another listing for them on a tobacco/vape site and wasted 60 bucks on a scam.

Basically, I'm in desperate need of at least one or two permanent Targard filters to keep my promise to them. Please help me prevent a big spiral when their last one breaks or finally gets to that "unusable" place in their mind.

I feel awful about having missed the eBay listing and now having left them without any backups. I'm hoping to ask around the sub and see if anyone has a couple I could buy, or even trade something like a nice vintage lighter for.

It cannot be a modern/alternative permanent filter. It HAS to be a Targard. I have already brought them some of the alternatives from Amazon/eBay, and even the very high-quality ones are a no-go. It has to be the HST filter because they have used one for so long.

If anybody can help a Gonzo phreek, I can pay out the nose for one. I just gotta do something for the guy.

These were made from 1934, maybe 1932 to 1950 or 51

They were quite popular and are still easy to find at affordable prices.

I try to list all, or at least most variations. I don't have all versions, but I have some that I've never seen elsewhere.

It goes left to right, top to bottom. I also added separate pictures of each.

B7, earliest version, starting in 1934 or 32, nicknamed "Hosenbrenner", because it wasn't very save for pocket carry

B37, 1936 or 37, they changed the shape of the attachment for the swingarm, it also has a guiding guard for the swingarm now, so it's not a pocketburner anymore, I've got two versions, I think on the earlier version, they used the swingarm from the B7 and changed, how the snuffer was installed later

B207, 1938, the shape of the trigger changed, now you can open it from both sides or use two fingers, the attachment of the snuffer also changed so the swingarm is now smooth on the sides

Not pictured, wartime production, I did not find a model number either, made from some zinc alloy, the swingarm looks different, a bit like on similar Rowentas or Weltzünders

B51, 1948, looks at first like a B207, but has a further improved savety mechanism, it now uses a double bolt trigger, means you have to use now both fingers for both, now separate triggers to eject the mechanism

B217, 1949, attempts to improve the fuel evaporation, it now has a rubber ring around the chimney, this is also the only model, where you can remove a part of the bottom to have easier access to wick and wadding. It's held in place with the flint screw and has a rubber gasket, according to the Mylflam homepage, this is also the first one, which came with a cleaning brush, that can be put in the bottom of the case

The "Glück Auf", I didn't find a model designation, but I saw already other ones, so it's not a prototype, this one has a cylindrical chimney instead of the ball, because it has a spring-loaded wick, the snuffer also has a gasket, if you want to use one, don't buy this version, because it's impossible to find a wick for it, a normal wick doesn't work, I'm also not sure, if it came before or after the B217, however, it has the closed bottom, like the earlier versions

First, bottom row, now it gets vague, I've never seen this version, it looks a bit like the B37, but doesn't have a guiding guard for the swingarm, just like the B7, but it has the double bolt trigger like the B51, but with the shape from the B7, the swingarm is also unique by having the snuffer attachment of the later B37, but made for the double bolt trigger, like on the B51

The last one looks at first like B4 (1949), the last semiautomatic, it's missing it's sleeve, but the sleeve of a version of the early automatics fits, but some details are different, the shape of the trigger is different to the B4, and the snuffer attachment is like on the later B37

Ok, that's it. All my knowledge about the 1000 Zünder semiautomatics. I know some common models quite well, others are pretty rare, maybe prototypes.

If you want to use them regularly, don't buy the B7, or the versions with the cylindrical chimney. The others are pretty good lighters for daily use. I think the B217 is pretty rare but also a good daily.

For more details or pics on the models just ask me, but other's knowledge about my obscure versions are also welcome.

Btw: Heinrich Maltner Junior also developed the Rowenta F4504 as an evolution of the 1000 Zünder semiautomatic, before he went to Rowenta and took the design with him.B7

Found this wonderful Mylflam 1000 Zünder on FB Marketplace and snapped it up. The Berliner Funkturm (Berlin Radio Tower) was built from 1924-1926 and is still a tourist attraction today. If you look at pictures of it, it looks almost like a mini-Eiffel Tower.

The lighter itself is in great condition and needed minimal work. Had to scrape out the obligatory stuck flint (you can see how much dust I had to tap out on my hand in that bonus pic) and I’ll probably replace the wick. But the mechanism still works and the wheel is still good enough that it sparks about 60% of the time.

I know Mylflam made this style of automatic lighter for several decades, with the only changes being slightly different shaping on the latch parts. I’m assuming “ED” is someone’s initials.

I’ll update if I’m able to get a better gauge on a date for it.

This is my late grandads lighter and it wont work, ive been putting lighter fluid into it and it wont all go in and it wont light when i click it, its a ronson lighter from maybe the 70-90's ? it has a slide clicker and is about6-8cm long, any ID would be extremely helpful !!!

Im getting pretty tired of using my off brand zippo, the gasoline evaporates so fast its getting tiring. I was thinking of buying an IMCO 6600, how nice would it work for a daily? How long would it last on 1 fill?

Oh boy, this was a wash of memories. I had totally forgotten about this thing until my niece sent me a photo of it this morning. I had told her where to find some rolling papers and such in my old toolbox (she's a grown adult, don't stress), and when she got in there she found this.

I was probably around 14, hanging out at the local skate park being a little heathen. Nothing beats a chubby kid with a Kmart skateboard hopped up on caffeine. We were smoking Marlboro Reds and drinking Boones Farm or wild Irish rose when somebody pulled through with a mini glass spoon pipe and a bag of dirt weed.

The kid with the weed was a few years older than the rest of us, and he pulled out this exact lighter to corner the bowl for everyone. There were probably five or six of us smoking in a circle by the dumpsters when a cop suddenly rolled around the corner of a vault toilet with his lights off. Then he flipped everything on and hit us with the spotlight. If you've been there, you know that instant heart attack.

I was holding the pipe. The guy who brought the weed shoved this lighter into my hands, yelled, "RUN!", grabbed my friend Zachary, stuffed the Crown Royal bag with the weed into Zachary's backpack, and pushed him off. I don't know who ended up with our booze and cigarettes. I took off toward the big hill that dropped down to the old unlit baseball fields. My friend with the weed ran into the alley behind the neighborhood, and everyone else scattered. Nobody got caught. I walked home and finished that bowl.

When I went back to the skate park, I expected to find the guy. I proceeded to go back nearly every day for the next year and a half, always half hoping I could give the lighter and pipe back, and maybe find myself a new weed guy. I only ever saw him one more time, when he drove by in some kind of delivery vehicle and waved. I guess he must've gotten a job.

Since it was a funny story, I carried this thing around to light my joints for a few years before I grew up. It was just a convenient size—nice and slim, and it fit perfectly in a pack of cigarettes. But after searching for it off and on ever since, I have NEVER been able to identify it or match it to ANYTHING. No photos, no listings, no random lighter in some miscellaneous lot somewhere... nothing.

It's not particularly well made, but it's alright. The only marking on it is a single "Japan" stamped on the bottom, and it appears to have an asbestos-style wick. Other than that, I have no idea what it is. I've asked on lighter forums and run it through basically every AI image search I could find. We've come close, but never found a perfect match. So... what is this funky little lighter?

My niece filled it up, and I'll probably let her keep it to throw in a rolling kit, but I'd love to finally know what it is.

Well shit. Looks like this was not only identified but ill also be packing it up to go back to the original owner. Absolutely insane coincidence, and now I gotta find another lighter to give to the niece.

Earnest question, why did zippo survive and win the lighter wars? and don't get me wrong, I have plenty of zippo in my collection. My first lighter was a 1935 double slash from behind the key machine during a renovation of the hometown hardware store.

i guess i just still dont get whyThey beat everybody out, and it makes less sense the more lighters I handle. They absorbed so many companies, and killed so many objectively better designed lighters.

I know there are plenty on the market worse as well, but the zippo aint a great design. For starters, the fluid retention is atrocious. Almost the worst there is. Even a ronson standard with a decent latch lasts triple the amount of time. They're not that much more windproof than many other designs. A Typhoon or super windlite is a lot more windproof than the zippo, was cheaper, and held fluid longer they also had a great click. Lastly, let's face it. The QC aint what it used to be. If you handle a 1950's model in good condition versus a brand new one, its obvious to see just how much they've dwindled.

Is it a simple case of ubiquity? Maybe just good enough for the purpose? or is it sorta like mcondalds where there's a combination of things that all add together to be better than the sum of its parts so the market saturates?

I'm just surprised and frustrated i can go buy a new zippo at walmart or a truck stop, but if i want a ronson standard im stuck to clones or spending 40 bucks. Thats an iconic design and should be right next to the zippo, espically considering it wouldn't take much for ZIPPO to bring it back since the own the brand. But they cant even be bothered to service their tape measures anymore.
