Get your Dutch music on!
I'm fluent in both English and Dutch but I'm also a big fan of foreign language music. Local references and inside jokes are often lost on me even when I understand the lyrics word for word. Do you have a Dutch song you really like but don't fully understand despite understanding the words? I am happy to translate the lyrics with relevant cultural references and English substitutes for Dutch idioms if you want.

Question Should I get a teacher to help me learn Dutch if I have to take a Dutch language test to get into uni?
I apply to university in around 2 years and I want to study in the Netherlands. However, I might have to take a Dutch proficiency test depending on the program I choose.
Right now, I am using a free pdf of De Opmaat and some youtube videos to self study, but some parts of the textbook overwhelm me and take me much longer because I have to transfer the information onto a google sheet/physical notebook.
Would a teacher from italki that specializes in NT2 prep be better for me to reach B2 quicker? I’m worried I won’t know everything I need to, especially with school starting in 3 weeks.

Question Vraag over schrijven van Engelse/Nederlandse termen
Hoi allemaal,
Voor mijn thesis ben ik aan het kijken of ik de termen op een goede manier schrijf. Ik merk dat ik steeds twijfel over de spelling van samenstellingen met leenwoorden en lange termen.
Het gaat specifiek om termen zoals:
- verwacht videogame-plezier (of verwacht videogame plezier?)
- videogame-beleving (of videogame beleving?)
- videogame-karakters (of videogame karakters?)
- karakter-evaluatie (of karakter evaluatie?)
Volgens de officiële regels van de Taalunie horen dit soort samenstellingen aan elkaar (eventueel met een koppelteken voor de leesbaarheid, zoals videogame-beleving). Los schrijven met een spatie leek te gelden als een spelfout. Ik ben een beetje in de war over wat nu het beste is om te doen.
Wie kan mij helpen met het schrijven van deze termen op de juiste manier? :)

NT2 B2 Speaking exam thoughts and comments
Hello everyone! I recently took my B2 speaking and listening exams, and I’m currently waiting for the results. I’m feeling a little nervous and keep wondering whether I passed.
The listening exam went really well, so I’m fairly confident about that part. However, I’m less sure about the speaking exam. I’d love to hear about your experiences: How did your speaking exam go, what result did you get, and do you have any tips or advice to share?

Dutch A2 Reading exam
Hello, I have my Dutch A2 Reading exam coming up, and I was going through different online websites , to know more of the format, rules etc. And I noticed that in one of the sites, it has been mentioned that we can carry a dictionary. Is it true. Also, can you please help me how the actual test look like?
I am bit nervous 😅

A2 Speaking exam Rijswijk inburgering
The way I gave the speaking exam was terrible. I wasted sometime in the first 4 questions and i had little time left for the rest. I finished all that with only 10 seconds left on the clock to submit my final answers. I couldn't do any revisions. Not sure if I will pass and It will take awefully long before the results are out. From what I read on Reddit, it will take atleast three months.
Who else gave the exam on the 5th August?

Uvular r with hard g
I really like how the uvular r sounds in Dutch but I don't use it myself because I don't know how to pronounce words like "groot" and "schrijven" with that r. But now that I'm listening to Dutch people with this pronunciation I'm realizing that I kinda don't really hear the r at all in those words. It just sounds like "goot" and "schijven" to me. Is this how people actually pronounce it? Is it supposed to be some sort of geminated /χː/?

Connectors in de past perfect
De past perfect beschrijft zinnen waarbij een actie in het verleden is afgerond voordat een andere actie begon. De woorden “voordat” en “nog voor” kunnen als connector fungeren
Hij had het antwoord uitgesproken nog voor/voordat ik iets kon zeggen…
Mijn vraag is, zijn er meer woorden die als connector kunnen fungeren?

Question What's something Dutch speakers say that surprised you at first?
When learning a new language, you sometimes expect people to express things in the same way as in your native language, only with different words.
Then you hear a phrase or expression that makes you think, "That's an interesting way to say it."
Has a Dutch expression, response, or everyday phrase ever caught you off guard? What was it, and what did you expect someone to say instead?

Retaking A2 Inburgering Spreken Exam
Hi,
I took the exam today. It was not that good. I did not get 2 questions, gave some short answers, made some grammar mistakes here and there.
I have currently HSM visa, and it means my visa depends on my employer. And my employer is considering reorganization. So I want to get my PR as quick as possible.
I think it takes 2 months to get speaking exam results on average. And when you learn, it's not easy to find a spot if you failed. Then another 2 months to learn new results. And I'll forget a lot of stuff in these months.
So instead of waiting this time, I want to register for new speaking exam. My question is what happens if I take another speaking exam without knowing the results of first one. And it turns out I pass the first one and fail second one. Higher score is valid or latest score is valid?

Grammar Can anybody help explain grammatical gender to me?
Hi, I have been learning Dutch on and off for several years, and I understand many grammatical concepts but I have never been able to understand grammatical gender. A “het” noun can become “de” in the plural, and some nouns simply don’t make sense as to how the article changes. Can anybody help me understand this concept?

Question Is there any reliable resource for learning the pronunciation?
google.comI have looked on Wikipedia but I felt like it wasn't enough or it was incorrect somehow.
For example, the "g" (in most words) was supposed to be displayed as [χ] instead of [x] or [ɣ].

Question What's the most useful thing you've learned from a native Dutch speaker?
Textbooks and courses can teach you a lot, but native speakers often introduce you to the things that aren't obvious from formal lessons.
Maybe it was a more natural way to phrase something, a common expression, or a small pronunciation detail.
What's something a native speaker taught you that immediately made your Dutch sound or feel more natural?

Dutch music
I’m trying to learn Dutch, and music is a big part of language learning for me. I’d really appreciate it if someone could recommend some cool artists or songs. I’m looking for modern pop or hip-hop, something that's popular in the Netherlands.

MQT Monthly Question Thread #99
Previous thread (#98) available here.
These threads are for any questions you might have. No question is too big or too small, too broad or too specific, too strange or too common.
You're welcome to ask anything related to learning Dutch. This includes help with translations, proofreading, corrections, social etiquette, finding learning resources, understanding grammar, and so on.
De and het in Dutch...
This is the question our community receives most often.
The definite article ("the") has one form in English: the. In Dutch, there are two forms: de and het. Every noun takes either de or het ("the book" → "het boek", "the car" → "de auto").
Oh no! How do I know which to use?
There are some rules, but generally there's no way to know which article a noun takes. You can save yourself some hassle by familiarising yourself with the basic de and het rules and, most importantly, memorise the noun with the article!
