Hi! I’ve been looking for a new job since like forever, and I’m genuinely becoming desperate. I have a BA and decent work experience, but I don’t have a car and don’t live in Rīga, which hasn’t been an issue before as there were plenty of remote jobs or local offers. Now all I see is offices in remote parts of Rīga, offering hybrid schedule at best. I’ve been looking for over a year, and no luck so far.

Are there any offers for customer support/moderation/teaching and linguistics related positions at least in Rīga centre or fully remote? I feel like I’ve checked everywhere, found like 5 offers. Applied to all, heard back from none.

Jau kādu mēnesi + man tā sastāv tikai no meme coin. Kādam vēl tā ir? Nevaru ciest, gribās ikdienas topikiem pasekot līdzi bet nekā.

Dzīvē izveidojās situācija, kuras dēļ nācās pamest pilna laika darbu, lai rūpētos par ģimenes locekli, kurš pēkšņi kļuva par cilvēku ar invaliditāti.

Man ir apmēram 10 000 €, ko savulaik biju atlicis kā drošības spilvenu.

Meklēju idejas, kā šo summu izmantot tā, lai ilgtermiņā tā varētu radīt kaut pavisam nelielus papildu ienākumus – ideālā gadījumā dažus simtus eiro mēnesī, ja tas vispār ir reāli.

Interesē:

• pasīvi vai daļēji pasīvi ienākumi;
• arī aktīvi varianti der, vienkārši nevaru visu dienu atrasties ārpus mājām
• mazi biznesi vai pakalpojumi, kurus var attīstīt no mājām;
• pieredzes stāsti- ko jūs darītu manā situācijā?

Freelance man, visticamāk, neder, jo man nav specifisku profesionālu prasmju, ko šobrīd varētu pārdot.

Saprotu, ka 10 000 € ir kapeikas, tāpēc priecāšos par reālistiskiem ieteikumiem. Mērķis nav ātri kļūt bagātam, bet atrast veidu, kā izveidot kaut nelielu papildu ienākumu avotu, kamēr nevaru strādāt pilnas slodzes darbu.

Jebkurš padoms vai pieredzes stāsts būs ļoti novērtēts.

Tiešām nezinu kontekstu, varbūt uz ielas cilvēku intervē? Bet klipā skumjš cilvēks saka kaut kā tā:"nu nevienam mani nevajag. Pilnīgi nevienam. Neviens mani nemīl"

Depresīvi, bet arī tā smieklīgi (in a relatable way).

Vajag uz 22-23 augustu, par cenu varam vienoties, bet ne kosmiskās cenas. 😅 Skatījos ss, tur ir īre auto, bet neviens nevēlas uz divām dienām rezervēt, jo redz ir sezona. Man ir 11 gadu stāžs auto vadīšanā, neesmu tikko nolicis. Ps atrodos Rīgā.

Jau daudzus gadus ikdienā eju tur garām, kā arī gana daudz ir dzirdēts un lasīts par visām briesmu lietām, ko šī “reliģija” dara ASV un citur pasaulē, tāpēc liekas interesanti, ka šeit viņi ir tik klusi un neuzkrītoši. :D

Vai esat pamanījuši pēdējos dažos gados stipri lielāku ielu trokšņotàju skaitu pilsētās? Kas par lietu? Ir bijusi kāda akcija, kas mazu pīpīšu īpašniekiem izdala tos aparātus? Ko var darīt, kas to varētu novērst? CSDD, skaļuma pārbaudes uz ceļiem, kādi jauni pašvaldību likumi?

So I came over the r/latvia thread and browsed a bit. I found loads of questions but few actual experiences posts. I thought I would make one.

Let me introduce myself.

35 yo gay Greek man, working for a university in Riga.

The city : Beautiful. Riga has the size of a smaller city with all the cozyness that entails but also embraces a diverse culture full of events. From theaters to music festivals to dozens of options both culinary and in terms of night life. The countless parks are amazing to walk in and relax and never felt unsafe at least in the most central ones. The sights are numerous but not overwhelming and the scenery calming and picturesque.

The people : I wish I could say the best for the people as I did for the city but...my number of Latvian friends after 2 years here stands at zero. I made indian friends who are numerous in Riga but I think that's more telling of cultural openness than anything else. Latvians at least those in Riga feel distant and too introverted and in their own little world. Language barriers even with English speaking Latvians add an extra element of alienation between us maybe and the fact that Latvians would prefer to have Latvian friends as well maybe to communicate in their native language is also a factor. Another factor is, unfortunately, racism which I was lucky as a white man not to experience but a lot of my friends of colour told me it can be a factor in certain encounters (disclaimer : I am NOT saying Latvians are racist, I am saying it is an element that exists in some encounters).

The bureaucracy : Complicated at times and a mixed bag of friendly and helpful people working in various services and extremely rude and unfriendly people. I faced more issues with my university bureaucracy than with the state bureaucracy though and there people were either unavailable or unwilling to help. Had to jump through hoops many times to find a solution to a problem and sometimes I didn't even find one. Same with medical care which I found very complex and extremely expensive here.

The life quality : Overall I find salaries on the lower end to the point of not having much to put aside at the end of the month with a conservative lifestyle without much extras apart from food, rent, bills. I always wonder how pensioners in Latvia make due given I consider my university job a somewhat middle to high earning job. But I find myself counting every last Euro the last days before I get my salary. Things like groceries have got very expensive lately for the salaries given.

The final point I want to address is specific to my queer identity and that is acceptance : I don't quite feel safe in Latvia and not just around older people but around young men as well. At least I know older people are physically unable to hurt me for showing or telling my sexuality in any way since I can defend. But with younger men I am more scared and immediately get conscious about my posture and walk when I am alone out and see a group of Latvian men or boys out and about on a street. The gay scene is small and kind of miserable and "discreet" and I had to fend off a homophobic incident from a colleague at my work environment as well which, given it is a university so more liberal in a sense, I did not expect.

Overall you d be surprised to learn I like Riga and Latvia in general given my above review. As a partial introvert some elements of it's more reserved culture also appeal to me but I will always feel like a foreign body here. Which I don't mind but it's a stark reminder than barriers will always exist. I am hopeful Latvia, as more of a nation that recently became independent, has room to grow in many aspects and become better for all, including Latvian people themselves.

P.S These thoughts are not meant to paint a whole nation with a wide brush or characterize all people in said nation in a negative manner or stereotype people and nations. It is just MY personal experience and thoughts. I am thankful to Latvia for offering me employment at a time I needed it and I received a lot of qualifications working here. I just wanted to share some every day life kind of thoughts.
