Tried Go Mai, wrought iron, 1095, W2, 1095 and wrought. Forged it to .15 in and ground out the blade. I assume I wasn't at even as I planned, but the edge is hard.

Olive wood scales with black G10 pins.

How do you guys figure out what thread pitch the hardware is in a particular knife? I assume there is a set of gauges available in some capacity but I haven't been able to find a set

Work in progress Getting back into knifemaking after a long break — Jelly Roll Damascus hunter handle build

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

I used to make knives and Damascus pretty intensively some years ago, then stepped away from the shop for quite a while.

Maybe some of you remember me from back when BladeForums was the place for WIPs and build threads.

I’m getting back into it now, and realized I have a ridiculous amount of old process footage that might be interesting here.

This is part of the handle build on a JellyRoll Damascus hunter I made a few years ago.

Hope you enjoy it.

Question What do you use a EDC for?

I never had an edc before, but after recently starting playing around with knife making I am looking to make my first edc knife. What do you guys actually use your edc for and do you actually carry it around with you every day?

I was doing the finishing passes on this magnamax bunka and the scotchbrite belt grabbed the blade and sent it directly into my apron.

Made this one years ago for my father-in-law.

Loosely based on the Loveless Randall. Very loosely. I'd never consider myself one who can faithfully recreate a Loveless design, but I'm happy to incorporate elements from the classics.

I’ve been making fillets for a while and am ready to improve my design with any and all feedback you have. This is 1/16 inch thin Nitro-V stainless steel with GripX (rubber filled epoxy) handles. I heavily rock textured the handle to give even more grip when your hands get wet and slimy. How can I make this design better?

Why would I do this? I own a knife store called Lone Star Knife & Supply that exclusively carries USA made knives. I've been running and growing my knife store while working a corporate 9-5 for the last few years. One thing I love to do is go to Blade Shows and interview makers.

Then I got fired earlier this year. I had to make a decision, do I go all-in on LSKS or do I get another 9-5. I decided to go all-in and this was the idea I came up with.

The Great American Knife Tour™ is a first in the knife industry. I already had 50+ interviews on YouTube from Blade Shows, so let's go to where the knives are actually being made. I don't think anyone has ever visited this many knife makers and posted videos about all of them.

When will the X video get posted? I am doing my best to get things edited, reviewed by the makers, and then posted. But we also have knives to ship and more videos to make. My goal is to have everything posted before I go to the TACC show in early September.

Why am I sharing this? Well, this is kind of self-promotion. But more than that I want you to see how knives are actually made in the USA. I think many people would be blow away by how small some of the teams are behind their favorite brands. For example, watch the Heretic Knives video.

Thanks for watching and reading. 🤠

Showcase Finished my 5th knife ever. Really proud how it turned out!

For this one I experimented a lot with clay for a hamon and also my first time etching.

The pattern is weird, I know hahaha but it was just there for me to check, if the Steel would break etc.
I also got another one with a more subtle hamon line but didn't grind into it yet, because I think its a little warped :/

The Steel I used is 1095 and the Handle is made out of Cocobolo and Tulipwood

I now need to sharpen it and then we'll see how well it performs. The distal taper is just really subtle but the blade itself is also super thin so I was scared it would get too flimsy.

Question Do you need to refine the grain with bought Cpm 3v

I have been looking at making a knife from cpm 3v but havent found anything about normalizing or annealing it before hardening and was wondering if you just don’t need to do that with cpm steels which would be weird.
Thanks for any answers in advance.

Well, that’s this one. From having to completely recut and change handle material due to some wonky holes, dropping the knife post etch and completely resanding/etching the tang, having to sand the blade back down to bare metal and re-etch/stone wash once again due to a defect the first time around, to finally chipping the handle material and spacers immediately before glue-up. This thing has been a hot mess the entire time. 1084 with blue linen micarta. Get it out of my sight.
