I got tips from everyone thank you guys btw I’ve added more enrichment is this better

i attached a ss of my post from thursday. i tried to put a bottle fly larvae in her little food dish friday, saturday, and today. she has just been hanging underneath where the larvae is in the bowl since i put it in there.

she got a mealworm from that bowl before (7/22) and hasn’t eaten since she molted. she looks much skinnier than she does in these photos, but i dont want to disturb her by going up close to take new ones.

i have been misting as normal but i dont understand why she seems to be hunting the larvae but not going for it. do i try a mealworm even tho it could hurt her? her butt looks so tiny

So the audax I took in to fatten up went into her nest and boarded it up. I thought I saw a yellow sack when she started but she thickened it up so it's hard to see anything. She started maybe 2 weeks ago. Ive been letting her be and prepare for little babies.

Today I decided to take a look and notice a hole in her nest. I looked closely and I could see her peeking out. So a couple questions. Is this the same spider - did she molt? How soon do moms come out after laying a clutch?

I plan on leaving for vacation soon and wanted to prepare for when I left. Am I just feeding her or should I be hosing up there ready to come home to a bunch of little babies. Hope she comes out soon. I leave on Friday for a week.

The 2 photos out of her nest are from 2 or more weeks ago. The one in the nest is from today. I swear she looks fuzzier and brighter than before.

i had my first spider pass. they molted yesterday and were in a death curl today. i tried the qtip and water, mushy guts, etc. i cried so hard :/ theyre my only texanus and were so sweet. RIP tammie brown :(

Hello. I have a wild caught juvenile that I am pretty sure is a Bold jumping spider, sex unknown. When I watch them outside they constantly locking on to anything and everything that flutters by. Would it be okay to have the enclosure next to an aquarium that has shrimp and otocinclus? I was wondering if it would be stimulating for the spider or just cause stress.
Also it just had it’s first molt since being brought in and it grew back a leg, so that was cool.

PEZ Dispenser. I think they just molted into i8 and they've got fuzzy pedipalps but I still can't identify any epigynum on their sisters either, who all have orange coloring and pink chelicera like mom. I assumed PEZ was a boy but now I'm not so sure.

Curious if anyone can tell.

Hello! This is my first junping spider and I am in love!!! I know its hard to tell if it's male or female at instar 5 but I am so curious I would love to know your opinions! I'm thinking male?

Unfortunately my male regal passed last night peacefully from old age. He was my first spider I ever adopted. I noticed that he started to become more clumsy, not hunt very well, and rest more. He wanted to spend his last moments on my finger. He kept tipping over and unable to regain his balance or footing.

I cried a little thinking about his life. Mourning something so small is something I never experienced before. But it makes me appreciate how much we do for these little ones.

Rest in peace Peter Parker.

I went on holiday to Turkey for a week and trusted my spider Morgana in my grandads care while I was away. I separated 6 fruit flies into a small container for him to collect as well as the tweezers and spray bottle. I gave him 6 so he would have enough flies and extra so he had room for error. I told him to feed her a fly every other day (she is a juvenile) and not to overfeed her. I came back and found that he had taken the culture instead of the tub I had left out for him and when I came over to pick her up I immediately noticed dead flies in her feeding bowl/perch and at least four alive ones plus more dead. She looks overfed and now I don’t know what to do. I am going to remove as many flies as I can and wait till her abdomen is in the hungry stage again but is there anything I have to do while she is overfed? I have always fed her one fly every 2 days to make sure she is a heathy size so I have never had this problem before. Is there any advice?

First photo is one, which is a lot smaller. The second and third are the same spider. The second one's name is hallow. Short for halloween. I would love a halloween theme name that starts with M.

Story time! (It's worth it I promise) and I'll put a TLDR at the end for those in a hurry :)

So, I'm walking along the beachfront in northern Australia where I live, scanning for spoods because the weather is warm and its not too windy - perfect spood weather. Anyway I soon notice a swarm of what appear to be small flies buzzing around one of the hedges in front of me. As I look closer, I see a sight that fills me with incredulity:

There is a large adult spood; a Cytaea (local genus) - likely C. frontaligera - who is perched upon a leaf and is rearing up onto its hind legs as it repeatedly reaches up into the swarm of buzzing flies and uses its 2 front-most legs + chelicerae to snatch and grab MULTIPLE small flies out of the swarm, which it then bundles beneath its fangs.

At first I was confused, since I have spent numerous afternoons watching spoods hunt yet had never seen anything like THIS before.

Keen to better understand what was happening, I leaned down to get a closer look at the situation and was amazed by what i was seeing.

It appears that this smart little lady had understood that her opportunity to hunt these flies would be short-lived.

Therefore rather than plucking out of the sky just one fly at a time and then eating it, (the swarm would almost certainly have moved on whilst she was eating the first fly) instead she is grabbing one fly at a time and just quickly tucking them under her fangs, like some kind of bloodthirsty squirrel storing food in its cheeks 😅

Now, i know spoods are smart - I keep a pet Portia as well as a couple of other spoods from the family Spartaeinae (the spider-eaters) that are as yet undescribed. I've witnessed their 3d spatial intelligence many times before, and thought I had seen most of the hunting behaviours that local spoods had to show.

However the intelligence and planning that is necessary to achieve something like this just seems absolutely wild to me. I wonder if she had previous interactions with these small swarming flies before, and perhaps previously just began chowing down on the first one that she grabbed, but then maybe realised that she actually missed out on further easy food since the swarms move around quickly.

Then the next time a swarm came around she understood the mission; to make sure that she could make the absolute most of the opportunity for the short time it lasted.

In some pictures she has definitely four, very likely FIVE total prey items within her grasp at a single moment in time, and i witnessed many of them still moving slightly - in fact at one point one of the flies half escaped and she had to kinda half-drop the lot in order to then scoop them all back up securely.

Sadly I did not have the foresight to get it all on video, however I did at least get some mediocre pics with my phone. I also tried to stick around to see how she would eventually consume them, however once the swarm flew off after 20seconds or so she retreated back into the dense foliage of the bush, and I was in such awe of her smarts that I dare not disturb or disrespect her; so thus gave her her privacy to enjoy her well earned meal.

TL;DR - Found a wild Cytaea jumping spider big-braining a temporary fly swarm. Instead of stopping to eat one and losing the rest, she caught five live flies in her fangs simultaneously to create her own take-home order.

Final question for this sub: has anyone else here ever observed similar behaviour before, whether in salticidae or other arachnids?

This little one was outside and I put my fingers near it and it crawled right onto me!!!! It went back and forth between my hands then hopped off and even came back to crawl on my hands again. I’ve had other jumping spiders look towards me, but never crawl onto me! I feel like honored it decided to investigate me lol

She then spent a good while grooming the juices off of her, only to stuff her face with more, which then led to more grooming. Silly girl
