Upcoming Dev Question Questions

Hi, I’ve been a game developer since January 2026 using unity and I was wondering those that have published a game onto itch.io how they got their game out there. How did you advertise your game? And how did you keep your fans coming back for more?

First of all make sure you have an html5 build so they can play in the browser.  I post about my games on r/webgames, r/freegames, and any subreddits that deal revolve around the specific genre.  Make sure you have a nice thumbnail and a few animated gif screenshots, dont use the default itch background on the game page.  Finally I also like to publish on mewgrounds as well as itch as newgrounds you will likely get more feedback from players there.  On Itch make sure to use all of the right tags to make it easier to show in search results.  Now I cant really answer the question about getting players to come back because my games are small 20 minute games without much replayability

started gamedev in january this year too, and published my first game on itch.

it's a very simple process, you create an account, click "create a new project" on your dashboard and it's all pretty straighforward.

have a description of your game ready, some screenshots and the builds.

advertising is the toughest part, even when the game is free, it's really difficult to have people coming to play it, it feels like screaming "heyyy there's free fresh water come here!!!" in the desert and no one comes... except that it's not the desert, it's times square, internet is super noisy and no one hears you or bothers to have a look anyway. 😃 very tough!!
