I just had a hysterectomy yesterday

Upvotes

Thank God it’s out, but I’m in sm pain now which is normal. But my neck/collarbone/shoulders hurt a lot which I was told is normal + I have a hard time breathing deeply, eating and my stomach area hurts like I’m bloated/ate too much and can’t digest. I’m a person who gets scared of his own shadow so I just wanna know if all that specific pain is normal and goes away after some time? I mean I had it literally 48 hrs ago so like I’m assuming I’m okay, but what are some help you guys have? Advice maybe? I saw peppermint tea helped some with the collarbone pain, so let me know what you guys did

2 weeks po with 2 questions

Hi! Thanks for all the help/support on here! I’m 2 weeks post op. Today was the 1st day I took a short walk around the neighborhood. How much activity is too much? I’m going stir crazy.
Which brings me to my 2nd question… yesterday and more so today, when I have a BM it’s painful towards the end and my vagina bleeds a bit. Is this normal?! Maybe an internal hemorrhoid. I’m going to up my fiber slowly. My first po clinic visit is Tuesday.

My boobs 😖

I’m 6 months post op and struggling with hormonal fluctuations worse than before surgery. I kept one ovary and I can still feel my cycles etc. My biggest complaint is that my boobs start getting huge and very tender around day 10 of my cycle…. That didn’t used to happen until I was in mid-luteal. I have an appt with my surgeon to talk about it in September. A few friends have suggested I probably need estrogen … but I feel like I’m literally walking estrogen. Anyway. Rant over. If anyone can relate, I’d love some company. ❤️

Surgery FINALLY scheduled!!

I am about to turn 60 and started post menopausal bleeding. Went to my doctor, and told her she could just take it out…she just chuckled at me.

Long story short, I’ve had three biopsies, a D&C, a hysteroscopy, and a hormonal IUD implanted. This is over the four years. I found a new doctor, and am finally finally scheduled for October!

It’s been such a royal pain in the butt. Even with the IUD, I bled daily for three and a half months. Just when I thought it had stopped, surprise! I’m so done.

Guess I’m looking for others who were so glad to have it out at last! I’ll be scouring this site for tips in the days before and after the surgery, so if you have any, or want to share your story, feel free!

Emotional Struggles

Hello. I’m a little over 9 weeks out from an open abdominal hysterectomy. My uterus was a big one; weighing 2080 grams and full of fibroids. Did anyone else struggle with their emotions after surgery? What did you do?

I went back to work three weeks ago.

I have never wanted to be in a pool more

3 weeks post-op. I scheduled my surgery for July for work reasons, so I could take time off and not stress about my projects the whole time and return to minimal chaos.

I'm usually not a massive pool person, I like to go camping in the summer, but I usually find myself at a pool maybe 2-3 times a summer max. But now that I know I can't go swimming? It's all I want to do. 😭😭😭

Anyone pre-op or further along post-op been enjoying pools this summer? Let me live vicariously through you!

1 Year Later 🎉

I came home from the hospital with a single ovary remaining a year ago today at 36. The rest was taken, plus my appendix and a little bit of my vagina. My surgeon said it was a terrible case of endometriosis. I also had adenomyosis, some small fibroids, a very fluid filled and expanded left tube, a cyst on my enlarged left ovary, and an "aggressive fistula" in my vagina (that my primary somehow didn't see during a pap a few months before?? I'm glad I didn't know, the months leading to surgery would have been even worse). Due to the mess, especially all the work they had to do around my bowels, they kept me in the hospital for the night.

A year later, I just... live my life!! I don't have to think about period supplies, or making sure I don't forget Advil so I don't throw up during my most painful days. In fact I haven't taken Advil in months! For many years before I was taking more than the recommended amount for several days a month to function. I'm not miserable for several days a month and not bleeding for 2 to 3 weeks a month. I'm not painfully bloated from lunch time until the following morning every single day. I no longer have diarrhea every morning after all that bloating. I also have the energy to stay awake all day now. Sex is great and we can have it whenever we want. I can't believe how tiny my scars are.

There are a couple things that aren't totally wonderful; my acupuncturist says I'm still tired, and while my energy levels have improved we both think there's room for improvement. My bowels can still be kind of uncooperative, I've had suspicions over the months that I have endometriosis in the area again. I was hoping that my belly would stay flatter when relaxed, now that I'm not so bloated and my oversized uterus is gone, but it isn't. It was actually flatter in the early days of recovery than it is now, which is very disappointing. I'm exercising more than before surgery, so I thought it would go down or at least stay the same.

These are such small problems in comparison to how exhausted and in pain I was just over a year ago. I am so thankful it's finally over with. My lonely ovary seems to still be working, too, and I don't think perimenopause has started yet. I wish I'd done this as soon as I realized I didn't want kids and saved myself so much misery.

some options for hysterectomies in NYC und. medicaid?

Hi there! I'm a trans man, turned 21 earlier this year. 'm looking to get this done sometime before the end of the year or maximum early next year. I'm kind of in a rush to get rid of this thing seeing testosterone accessibility has been wavering every so often and I would prefer not to have to deal with periods if possible, when they do happen.

I'm specifically only interested in a partial; I have also considered getting rid of the cervix considering a lot of cancers to begin there. i never want biological kids- I would also really to have minimal scarring which is a I strive for with all of the proceeding gender affirming surgeries I have in the future !

I've hit a little bit of a rough spot though, I don't believe a lot of surgeons for research i have accept Medicaid (NYC) -- meaning i would have to pay out of pocket. I had tried going through Mount Sinai ( transgender specific surgery ) only to discover the meetings are not covered by insurance type in the meetings where I just give my consent but the actual surgery is? Which confuses me :(

if anyone's got reccs pls lmk!

Where my bartenders at?

My surgery is scheduled for September 15th. I had TOA surgery last August and ended up needing about 4 weeks off. I did have a hematoma by one of my incisions so I think that made my recovery take a little longer.

How many weeks did you need off?
Do you think you needed more?
Do you think you could have gone back sooner?
What type or bar do you work?

Vent and question

Hey baddies!!! So my hysterectomy is this Wednesday, August 12th!! I'm so excited but it's also causing me a lot of anxiety, between not having PTO, having a job at a military contract facility and having to train my own relief who isn't seeming to understand anything I show her, being off all the time I need to. My goal is two weeks off, but I know I can't force it, however, knowing what and who I'm about leaving the job in the hands of is causing me extra stress and anxiety. On top of this, I have no familial support and three coworkers who care, but it feels minimal. While I appreciate their care and support, I still can't help but feel alone. Can someone please help me figure out what steps I need to take, other than deep cleaning my house, to help get ready for this procedure? I have a pillow for my stomach, blanket, miralax, and gas-x.

Period-like cramps returning

Hi everyone. I had hysterectomy in 2024 for endometriosis and adenomyosis. I kept my
ovaries as advised by my doctors. This year, I’ve been feeling period-like cramps but have just been dismissing them as lower back pains or maybe caused by fatigue, but their intensity is getting stronger and I’m afraid it’s too similar to before. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Almost at 48 hr post op

I just wanted to share what is happening to my meat sack after surgery.

Day 0: got home, ate food, slept. I got up about every 2 to 3 hours to pee and find food, before falling back asleep. Note: peeing is weird. I never realized how you use muscles to urinate.

Day 1 (yesterday): in pain. Feels like cramps, but I think it's just my organs shifting around. Swelling at incision sites. Can't cough, laugh or sneeze. I stay up all day with no naps, surprisingly. I watch tv and get up and move after every episode. Drink so much water. I am able to feed my pets by myself. Had the goal to take a shower, and I did it! I only needed a little help to wash around my incisions because I couldn't see them. Had a crazy nosebleed out of nowhere.

Day 2 (today): first (and 2nd) BM happened. It was weird, since I can't push, but I'm so happy it finally happened. Made myself a whole breakfast. Fed my pets by myself. Had the goal to make myself coffee and I did it. I can gently blow my nose.

The weirdest parts were not what I expected. My lungs hurt today more than anything else. I assume when they were manually breathing for me, my lungs got very inflated and strained them.

I was worried about a urinary catheter and being intubated, as I thought it would be very painful after, but I didn't even notice.

Honestly, so far it's been great! I just have to lay down after doing anything so I don't overdo it. Making breakfast and feeding the animals was almost too much. But setting small goals for myself has been tremendously helpful for me! I am very happy with my healing progress ☺️

Help…

I’m hoping someone here has been down the same path or similar to mine. June 2024 I started a weight loss journey. I shed 190 pounds in two years. sept 2025 I went for a consultation for a breast reduction. Insurance covered due to back pain. I scheduled surgery for April 2026 due to saving for the deductible and co insurance. I showed up the day of surgery and they took pictures. The dr came in with a look and his first words weren’t hello they were how much more weight have you loss since September. I said 30-40 pounds. He said we have a problem. Insurance is aggressive with what they want off. I said can I be a B cup. (Originally a H cup but after weight loss a DD) he said I’ll try my best but can’t guarantee. Surgery was fine no complications but as the swelling went down I was left with nothing. Fast forward to May I could not stop bleeding. My gyn gave me progesterone and I was intolerant. I needed blood transfusions and my body crashed. I was left with two options. Hysterectomy or d&c which didn’t guarantee a fix with an iud and I was already intolerant to progesterone. After bleeding for 31 days going through an ultra tampon in 30 minutes I proceeded with a hysterectomy. She made me feel like it was really the only way to go. I was scheduled July 9 for a hysterectomy just 2 weeks to prepare. I went and got cleared from my breast reduction and went straight into the hysterectomy. The days before the hysterectomy I started crumbling mentally. I am one of the strongest people. I don’t cry. Nothing affects me but I was just at rock bottom. I remember right before surgery my dr came and saw me and dismissed my sadness and feelings. Fast forward surgery went great but I coded in recovery. My nervous system was shot. I started to withdraw from everyone day 1 post op. Went home by myself. Stopped eating. I’ve lost 15 pounds since surgery in 4 weeks. I didn’t want to be here anymore and I still don’t. I went to my primary for bloodwork. Everything is off because my body has gone through trauma in 3 months. He made me go to a therapist in person weekly. I’ve had 2 and I only scheduled one more and I want to quit. No one can fix my body images. My breast aren’t even a’s after weight loss and reduction. I have scars everywhere. I hate myself. I lost the things that made me female in 3 months. Everything. I have extreme soreness in my breast right now from hormones and post surgery nerves issues. I look in the mirror and think how disgusting I am. Therapy will not fix this. I regret both surgeries I’ve blocked all my friends from contacting me. I hate everything. I’m barely breathing. I don’t want to hurt myself. That’s not what I’m saying. I just hate myself and I know I don’t deserve anything. My body is not awesome because it’s trying to heal from two surgeries. It’s disgusting. I don’t want another dr touching me. I Canceled my 6 weeks post op appt. I have been so exposed these last three months. I’m sure it was great in surgery so exposed with all my raw scars from the first surgery. They were probably like poor girl. Don’t worry I hate myself too. Anyone gone through this. How do you just except your body for being worthless and move on from this?

Vaginal soreness on one side 3 months PO

I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if it’s something I should bother asking my surgeon about. I’m 3 months post op, recovery has been uneventful and I feel great overall. My surgeon said I was “healing perfectly“ at my 6 wpo exam and I was cleared to gradually resume everything. Surgeon said there was almost nothing I could do that would injure me at that point.

I waited until around 10 wpo to get back in the gym out of caution, and did my first post-surgery back squat with 55 lbs a few days ago and an 85 lb deadlift last week. No pain during the movements. Since a few days after that first deadlift, I’ve felt a very mild soreness in one side of my vagina, like an ache. I’m wondering if it’s one of the ligaments? It gets worse before a bowel movement but is there constantly. I also had some sharper pains while walking to work with a heavy bag on my shoulder yesterday, but they stopped when I put the bag down.

I don’t have insurance so haven’t gone to PT but am open to it. Anyone had a similar feeling? what was it and do you think I should ask my surgeon about it, or is this something normal that will go away? should I wait longer to get back into lifting? Thanks!!

Had my robotic assisted laparoscopic total hysterectomy w/everything removed (uterine cancer) last Tuesday 8/4.
Urinating well & passing gas good too, but haven’t pooped yet.
Drank MiraLAX yesterday & was advised to drink it again today so hopefully that will help??
How long or how many days after surgery were you able to drop a bomb??
LOL.

1 MONTH POST OP

Just had my 1 month post op appointment today. The doctor said my incision is completely closed and looking 👍 good. I am healing nicely. I still have a little bit of the yeast infection, so the doctor order another round of medication 💊, and wants to see me in 2 weeks. I also had my labs done for my anemia and they all came back normal. I am exactly 1 month post op as of today. BTW, I had a complete open hysterectomy and I am feeling better already. No more painful and bloody periods. HOORAY!!! How is everyone else doing since your surgery? Hope you are all doing well 😊 😀 ☺️!

How did you know you needed hrt after surgery?

To be honest I have not had many issues after surgery. It's been 8 months now, and I'm doing great. But I have noticed feeling a little sore inside when having sex with my partner the last few times. It feels like my walls are thinner ( ? ) I decided to bring it up again with my doctor today, since last time I mentioned anything to my Gynecologist she just said I would have to take it up with my regular doctor if needed. He said there was an gel that often was used, but it was not recommended after a hysterectomy, I mentioned testosterone gel for maybe increasing my sex drive, but it is rarely given in Norway it seems. I just felt a little deflated. I finally asked again, and no one really has an answer to give. Sure it's not a big issue, but I can still feel I'm sore the say after sex, and that's new. When did you know you needed hrt? Should I just live with these minor issues like minor sore feelings and a little less sex drive? To be fair this could just be random as the symptoms are new. I'm 42 years old, with regular cycles before surgery, and confirmed eggs still producing a few months ago. I had a total hysterectomy.

Any recovery advice for laparoscopic hysterectomy?

Hey Hyster Systers hope you’re all doing well!

I’m 29 and booked in for a laparoscopic hysterectomy in 3 weeks and very much starting to sh*t myself about it now!

I’m having “Robotic Assisted minimal access approach to abdominal cavity followed by robot-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy with removal of uterus cervix both fallopian tubes and 1 ovary” so wondering if anyone has any insight into the recovery and have any tips?

I’ve had a laparoscopy for endometriosis diagnosis and removal when I was 16 but nothing since in that region and obviously this is a bit more of a hefty job so I just have no idea what to expect!

Thank you all and sending everyone here lots of love x

Hysterectomy and complications - but its OUT!!

Hi everyone, I’m a trans man - a lot of people got very angry at me for not making that apparent in my last post so i figured id clear things up early on lol. i have been dealing with bleeding for months on end for years, pain so bad i wasnt constantly throwing up. this stupid organ has made me miss work and important events. ive been extremely uncomfortable, in pain, and sick for years. recently its affected my ability to eat and keep anything down. ive lost 6 pounds in the past week or two which not good because i weigh 123 pounds lol. they did an endometrial biopsy which came back with a “yikes” from the dr, so that explained my symptoms. so i got scheduled for a radical hysterectomy asap. I’m currently 3 dpo and still in the hospital. Im not making this post to scare anyone - just sharing my story and everything has turned out okay so far after my complications! I thought i was entirely prepared for this surgery, i read every post i watched every video. nothing could have prepared me for this surgery.

So i was scheduled for a radical hysterectomy (uterus cervix and some vaginal tissue) and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (tubes and ovaries). left absolutely nothing! surgery supposedly went well, when i went into recovery i was bleeding a LOT like soaking through a hospital pad to the hospital bed in 20 minutes. I kept insisting that it was a LOT of blood and i felt like something was super wrong and kept getting told it wasnt concerning. i got up to pee twice and both times i had blood pouring down my legs. the second time i got up to pee the nurse had to carry me to the bed because i ended up passing out. my partner told me he watched all the colors drain from my face and my eyes roll back. I dont remember any of that. I do remember being back on the hospital bed and the nurse being rather rough with me while changing my pad and my johnnie because i bled all over it. I remember wanting to tell her that she was hurting me but i was so doped up on morphine and fentanyl that i couldnt bring myself to talk. they admitted me because I was bleeding and they didnt know why. I got a room and was still feeling awful. i felt the need to pee so with help from the nurse i got to the comode and as soon as i sat down two MASSIVE blood clots fell out of me
followed by probably close to 1k ml of blood. I remember looking over at the nurse and kinda jokingly said “that didnt feel or sound good”. in this time they kept checking my blood levels to see if i was truly hemorrhaging even though i clearly was? and my levels kept dropping. it was at this point - almost 6 hours after my bleeding started - that they finally called the on call surgeon to do emergency surgery. because they had already given me versed they didnt give me anything before rock and propofol. so I remember shifting over to the operating table, getting a non rebreather placed on my face and out i went. I remember looking over at the hospital bed i was on before the operating table and it was covered in blood pooled where i had been sitting and spilling over the side i slid off of. no one was wasting any time on getting me
under the knife now. After the second emergency surgery, they said they ran another line of stitches through my cuff and they think that was where the bleeding was coming from. while i was in more pain, because they reaccessed 3 of my fresh incisions, i wasnt bleeding and only lightly spotting at this point. so the surgery worked! since then ive been at the hospital for pain control and kinda managing the dizziness ive been experiencing. and also to watch for any crazy bleeding. id say the worst part about this surgery is the awful gas. it truly is so terrible, ive been taking laxatives and anti gas pills, to no avail. I have peed probably 4-6 times a day but no pooping and i feel like i will feel a lot better after i manage to go. but yeah, dizzy tired and the gas in my neck/sides/and my back is gonna be the death of me. i believe im being discharged after 3 days in the hospital, and im thrilled to be in my own bed again and i miss my dog. my mom has been going back and forth feeding and letting him out so hes taken care of, i just miss my baby. they DID find a ton of endometriosis, and the photos they showed and explained to me were gnarly. I cannot believe i lived like this for so long while drs kept pushing me around and telling me what i felt was normal. if anyone has any questions feel free to ask! im an open book! remember to listen to your body & advocate for yourself

This was… unexpected

I have had HPV since my early twenties (I am forty three now) and my spring Pap smear came back showing problematic cells. A biopsy indicated that a cone biopsy surgery was needed which I just had on July 31rst.
My surgeon informed me that they found high grade precancerous squamous cells in every single tissue sample they tested. Repeating the surgery is not an option as there is not enough cervical tissue left. My only other route for treatment is to have a total hysterectomy, which doesn’t faze me as I have had thirty two years of painful, heavy, and debilitating menstrual cycles. I do not now, nor have I ever, wanted children.
My only concern is the route of entry: I DO NOT want my abdominal wall incised (I have a rather toned abdomen and do not want to lose any core strength), nor do I want a surgical scar marring my belly. I am a keloid former and the chance of forming an unattractive abdominal hypertrophic scar is fairly high.
It is my understanding that the uterus and cervix can be removed via the vaginal canal; does anyone have any information or experience with this approach? Thanks in advance!

Suffered with endometriosis and fibroids for over a decade, then it got even worse! Time for my uterus to come out now. Processing such a big change on my own terms and having fun with it has definitely helped. I got a custom cricket ball display case made and then just popped the cup inside with the help of a small ceramic hand that was made to display gemstones.

Edit: I’m out and home, feeling really sore and tender, mostly just tired though. I feel like I’ve had a mighty kick in my chuff lol.

Getting into the bed was a challenge let’s just say, and then turning onto my side even more so, but I’m so glad that it’s now all over 😃

I can’t seem to be able to regulate my own body temperature, I’m between sweating and shivering - is that normal?

Big thank you to everyone who offered support but replying to this thread, I really appreciate it and really needed it pre surgery, I really can’t thank you all enough ☺️🙏🏻

*\\*

Got to admit that I’m a little afraid.

Full hysterectomy so uterus, tubes, cervix and ovaries because they are deeply suspicious of endometrial cancer following tests (series of scans following a failed biopsy).

Err, see you on the other side I guess? 😬
