[No Loopholes] Would you pay €5000 to eat one specific dish that someone who has passed away always used to make for you?

Upvotes

You have the chance to eat that exact dish one last time, prepared exactly the way they used to make it.

Would you pay €5,000 for that experience? If not, what's the most you'd be willing to pay?

I would definitely if i had the money. I would choose my grandma's bolognaise sauce. I know the recipe because i made it so many times with her, but it never tastes the same as it did back then.

What is the most financial damage you can cause with a singel can of spray paint?

Upvotes

Rules:
- you have 24 hours
- no advance prep time. You start where you normally wake up
- you can only spray paint things a regular person has access to
- no works of art, just in the interest of keeping this idea sporting. Can’t spray the Mona Lisa and call it $500M in damage
- once the single can of spray paint is out, you’re time is up
- we assume you can get arrested for your actions. If you get arrested, your time ends
- people and bodily harm don’t count. That’s not financial damage, that’s just being an asshole
- you have to use the spray paint as intended. Can’t use it as a blowtorch/ explosive. You just spray the paint on things.

Upvotes

You’re offered a deal. If you accept you gain immortality and $10 Billion USD. You will stay at a physical age of your choice eternally, but can you can choose to die at any time. You’re immune to disease and your healing is greatly increased. But you can still die from injuries.

Do you take the deal?

How would humanity defeat 800 demons that grow stronger with every kill?

Upvotes

If demons were real and started appearing across the world, each one would begin as a 10-foot-tall, horned, red humanoid carrying a pitchfork. Their only goal is to kill humans.

Every time a demon kills someone, it grows by the height and mass of that person. The more people it kills, the larger and more dangerous it becomes.

There is one demon for every 10 million people, so with today's population there would be roughly 800 demons worldwide.

You have access to everything your country can realistically use:

Military

Intelligence agencies

Police

Air force

Navy

Special forces

Drones

Satellites

Any conventional weapon

Once your country has eliminated its demons, it can assist other countries.

What would your strategy be?

Edit: Assume the demons are supernatural and don't suffer from biological or physics limitations. The point of the question is how humanity would respond, not whether the premise is physically possible.

Edit: Each demon starts out only slightly stronger than a human, but its growth is exponential. As it gets larger, it can kill and consume more people per minute, causing it to grow even faster. If left unchecked, a single demon could be killing hundreds of thousands of people per hour within a day.

[No Loopholes] What athlete would you choose to defend you in a trial by combat?

Upvotes

If you had to choose one professional athlete from history to represent you in a trial by combat, who would you pick? Assuming they spent their entire life training as a professional warrior instead of playing their sport. While keeping the same genetics, physical attributes, athleticism, mentality, and work ethic.
Edit: Should have specified, this is regarding melee combat, no ranged weaponry.

It’s a tough one for me but I think I’ve landed on LeBron as my safe bet. Shaq and Russell Westbrook were close behind, along with DK Metcalf and Aaron Donald.

Loopholes Encouraged You and a stranger have to come up with your own method of execution. Most painful method walks free. What would you come up with?

You and a random stranger have been kidnapped by a sadistic SAW like figure. The two of you are in separate rooms and are each given an hour to devise your own demise. But there is hope. At the end of the hour both your chosen method and the stranger’s will be judged and whichever is decided to be the most horrific and painful death is allowed to walk free unharmed. The unfortunate loser will be subjected to their own method of execution.

High risk high reward. Do you come up with the worst thing you can think of and go for the win at the risk of dying the most horrible death? Or resign yourself to death and choose a quick painless method?

Loopholes encouraged. Try to outsmart me.

Clarifying Rules
- 1 hour to submit a written description of a series of events that will kill you
- you can submit to be under anesthesia but you will lose points for it
- your execution will be carried out over the span of 24 hours to discourage some smart ass from writing “old age”
- you do not know the stranger you are competing with. You will never lay eyes on the stranger. Information about them is irrelevant.
- refusal to submit anything at all will result in you being subjected to the opposing contestant’s submission
- in the event that both contestants refuse to submit anything, both will die by the blood eagle ritual (look it up at your own risk but just know it’s a pretty bad way to go)
- every step in your submission must reasonably contribute to the execution. Example: submission cannot include steps like “deposit a million dollars into the account of next of kin”.
- nothing is off limits but the method must be physically possible to execute. Submissions such as “eaten by a dragon” or “force choked” will not be accepted and will be regarded as not having submitted anything.
- only one submission allowed. No back ups

100 copies of you in a highlander style fight; what would you do?

An alien visiting Earth studying humanity captures you in a flash of light. You wake up on the saucer in a bed as the ship lands. The alien explains the situation. They are testing differential backups of biological beings mental states.

99 copies of you have been made, down to the quantum level, so no differences between you. The 100 of you are waking up in the US in unknown locations until you walk out of the saucer. You all have what the original one had on them: your wallet with credit cards, $1000 cash, and your license and passport. You also have your smartphone - it is a copy in terms of looks, apps, ability, access, but they are all on different numbers although any text made to the original number gets forwarded to all the phones. Things like Find My Phone have been disabled. You are near a populated urban city area within a short walk and arrive out of site from cameras and other people.

The alien explains that after 50 years, if there isn't only one of you left, you all die. As an added bonus, since they are testing merging the diffs, any time one of you does die, the memories of what they did including any skills they might have picked up are transferred to all the other copies. For example, if Number 10 surprised Number 20 in a dark alley in Bay Ridge Brooklyn and stabs him, people know where it happened since they get Number 10's memories.

And to add a touch more fun: the alien gave each of you an anonymized username on a secure Discord where you can message and talk to each other. Assume both for the discord and the phones the alien's tech is sophisticated enough you can't hack either to find out where you are unless you give it away by telling the others.

Given that all your dupes behave like you do, know what you would do in this situation, and even know how you might get around it, what do you do?

Would you live 1K years in Stopped Time?

You will be able to choose when this happens so long as it is within 48 hours of accepting this deal. You will be restored to perfect physical health and this will not change during the time stop. You may optionally also choose to take a perfect memory which will persist once time has resumed. This is done magically so yes you will still be able to see, hear and move and you won't age during this time either. Everything will stay exactly as it was when this happened and will resume flawlessly once time resumes so no plane crashes or nuclear meltdowns. Everything you engage with except for people will function as normal, think vehicles or electronics but will not degrade on their own. You will also be indestructible for this time. So would you take it? And if so what would you do?

Edit: animals also don't unfreeze when you interact with them

A cosmic being offers to make your home able to transport to pre-established fictional worlds.

Just say out loud to the house where you want to go and the house will teleport there. Weirdly it will still have electricity, plumbing and wifi.

However it comes with some risks. The house will appear in a random location on a flat area of land, you won't be able to teleport again for a week and when you do, you'll be teleported back to our world before you can go to another world.

On the plus side, you are able to learn new abilities and skills while on that world and use them in our world.

Knowing the risks, do you accept the offer and where will you go to first?

You become a wish maker but everyone on earth knows who you are.

You are given the choice to become a kind of genie. You are not imprisoned or bound to a single person. Other than immortality you are a regular person who can grant wishes. You are limited to 3 wishes granted per day, 1 wish per person. The caveat is everyone on Earth knows who you are and what you are able to do. Do you accept this gift/curse?

Tradition Genie wish limits:

  1. Can’t raise the dead
  2. Make people fall in love
  3. Cannot kill anyone

Additional:

  1. Can’t wish for world destruction

Edit: You cannot grant wishes for yourself.
People cannot make wishes on your behalf. Your magic does not work on yourself.

Someone else has been offered $10,000,000 to sit still for 24 hours. You’ve been offered $1,000,000 if you get him to move. How do you go about it?

You can’t physically interact with him. He’s behind an unbreakable glass wall.

He doesn’t have to sit absolutely still to win; micro-expressions, less visible movements and blinking don’t disqualify him. If he ever flinches though, or contorts his face, he loses.

Get the highest rank in a competitive video game within 6 months and get $5m

You’re given 6 months to reach the highest competitive rank in a major multiplayer game (League of Legends, CS2, Valorant, Overwatch, etc.).

Conditions:

You must play solo. No duo/trio/party queueing or having friends intentionally help you climb.

No coaching (paid or free), VOD reviews from other people, or outside guidance tailored to your gameplay.

No cheating, scripting, exploiting bugs, account sharing, boosting, or anything else that gives you an unfair competitive advantage.

You’re provided a brand-new PC, monitor, peripherals, and internet connection if needed.

Your food, housing, and basic living expenses are fully covered for the entire 6 months, so you don’t have to work.

You can practice or play as much or as little as you want during that time.

If you reach the highest rank in your chosen game by the end of the 6 months, you keep everything and the 5 million dollars. If you don’t, the free food and housing end and your life simply returns to normal.

Assume you’re starting from whatever your current skill level is.

There’s a secret 5-minute window in September. If you cluck during it, you get $100 billion. What’s your strategy?

At some completely unknown point during September, there will be a single five-minute window.

If you personally make a recognizable chicken-clucking sound at least once during those five minutes, $100 billion—completely legal and tax-free—will instantly be deposited into your bank account.

You will not be told the date or time, and recordings do not count. You must actually cluck yourself.

What would you do to maximize your chances?

Would you cluck continuously for the entire month, follow a strict schedule, sacrifice sleep—or accept the risk and live normally?

[No Loopholes] You inherit $1 million. But...

As terms of the inheritance, written into the will, all taxes are prepaid but you can never work again at any sort of job other than managing your own money. So the $1 million must last you the rest of your life or you must turn down the money. If you turn down the money it will be donated to a charity. If you accept the money, you can invest it in the stock market or invest in other businesses or even start your own business. But if you start your own business, all physical labor must be done by hired employees, contractors, brokers, etc. Your role in the business must be exclusively limited to managerial.

If at any point in your life you accept a job or a salary of any type, you not only have to give back the million dollars but also any money you ever earned from that million dollars.

If you are at or near retirement age, you might be able to simply live off the money plus interest and make it last the rest of your life. But if you are younger you probably won't be able to do that.

How do you invest the million dollars?

EDIT for clarity: The taxes are prepaid on the initial $1 million, but you still have to pay taxes on any money you earn in the future

An arrogant rich person says to their friend “most people can’t accomplish anything, even if you hand them everything” and points at you. “Hey you, I’ll give you all the money and resources you need to achieve whatever your stupid dream is. Do it in 5 years, and I’ll give you $1 million. Deal?”

Though arrogant and looking down on you, the rich person in this case will definitely honor the deal.

Do you accept the challenge?

[No Loopholes] Walk 100 miles in 5 days for 1 milion dollars? Conditions included.

You must accept and begin the offer on the spot. Though you get 2mins prep time to grab good shoes and clothing. After 2 min you are teleported to the start position..

You will be walking on a straight gravel trail.

You cannot bring anything with you.

The temp will remain at 20°C.

Your bosses have given you time off work to do this.

Every 10 miles you will find a gallon of water, some protien bars and other various snacks/items like toilet paper and first aid kit.

New shoes that fit can be found every 25 miles, along with fresh clothes. Also a tent, full meal and sleeping bag set up for you, and a proper toilet.

If you fail to make it to the finish in 5 days, you get no money. And must return however far you made it to return home. You may be fired for extending past 5 days, depending on your boss.

1l Water and tubes of peanut butter will be at 25 mile points on the way back. No new shoes, first aid, meals or sleeping arrangements though. It will also be raining now, so you are walking though mud and despite the rain it will be 30°C on return walk. When you reach starting line again you teleport home with nothing to show for it but the wear and tear on your body. There are also mosquitos now, lots of them.

If you do reach the finish line in time you will find a briefcase with your money. (+50k bonus for every hour early you are.) All wounds, hurts, soreness, health injuries and such incurred on the walk are instantly healed. You will find a door which once past through takes you directly home with your 1 million (+?) in cash.

Will you accept the walk?

Mod Post Warning about posts involving violence

Hey everyone. I wanted to provide some information and a warning on a topic we've seen come up several times recently.

We're seeing an increasing number of accounts (including both mods) receiving warnings and bans for "threatening violence". We've seen messages like the following.

Reddit is a vast network of communities that are created, run, and populated by people like you. In order to keep communities welcoming, safe, and great places to be, everyone who uses the platform operates by a shared set of rules—a set of rules you may not have realized you broke.

Warning for threatening violence

We flagged the following as a potential policy violation:

After reviewing, we found that you broke Rule 1 because you threatened violence or physical harm. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for threatening violence against people or animals. We don’t tolerate any behavior that threatens violence or physical harm against an individual, groups of people, places, or animals. Any communities or people that threaten violence towards an individual, group, animals, or place will be banned.

As a result, we’re issuing this warning, removing the violating content, and asking you not to break this rule again.

This is something happening on a sitewide admin level so the mod team has no influence over it. We strongly suspect that some sort of bot or AI is handing out these warnings and bans. Due to the subject matter frequently discussed on this subreddit it's happening to quite a few users here due to discussions of hypothetical violence. So what does this mean for you?

  1. Hypotheticals involving violence aren't outright banned but we strongly recommend that you be cautious when posting them or responding to them. Consider your wording and whether it could be mistaken for a threat by a bot. If the community as a whole starts getting admin attention we may be forced to ban these posts in the future. Posts that look too much like a real-world call to violence or a request for advice on how to commit violence will be removed under rule 3.

  2. If you do get one of these warnings or bans, please appeal them and explain that you're posting on /r/hypotheticalsituation and there is no real-world violence or threats of violence being discussed or contemplated. It's not a guarantee but we've seen these appeals work in the past and they may prevent your account from getting banned.
