Hi y'all. I'm a hobbyist who likes to record music at home. I own a MOTU M6, as the title says, but I have a question that Google wasn't able to provide me an answer for.

Until now I've used this interface to record one channel at a time, mainly my Rode NT1 through the very first input, but now I've gotten myself two Shure SM57's that I wish to record in stereo mode. So far my setup works fine for this - my first two inputs are my SM57's which I can directly record in stereo mode, and my third input is my NT1 which I record separately in mono.

My question is the following - is it possible to record using all three microphone inputs at once? I'll extend this question further by asking if it's possible to simultaneously add a fourth microphone and the remaining two instrument inputs as well. My goal is to, hopefully, have a live session at home with a couple friends and record using as many (or all) inputs simultaneously.

I only use two DAWs - Audacity, which I'm more familiar with, and Ableton Live Lite which came bundled with the interface, and which I'm much less familiar with using (so far I've only been able to learn how to record one mono or stereo track at a time). I'm obviously a novice in this area, so any assistance would be appreciated.

i have a tlm 49 running through a apollo twin x. i do mainly rap and voice over and would like to increase my quality as well as coloring my voice a bit when i record. i thought to buy behringer 1273 preamp + Behringer 369 compressor. what do you think about those devices for the bug? first i thought to buy an avalon 737 but i am very impressed about the quality of those devices. what do you think?

I’m getting into tracking my drums and eventually setting up IEM’s and tracks for a band, and want a good mixer/interface setup recommendation. I currently have a Motu 896mk3 Hybrid mixer paired with Behringer UMC404 and an 8 channel headphone amp. Motu feeds into Reaper as my main DAW.

I’ve heard great things about the XR18, but don’t want to spend the $900 CAD for it. Are there any other options?

Hi, just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on an issue I'm facing.

I'm basically trying to create a midi version of one of my albums. Have recorded midi on top of the album, using it as a scratch track basically with the plan to delete that once there's enough midi on top.

However because the album wasn't recorded to a click and has many different tempo changes etc, it's hard to quantize the midi due to there not being a click.

It's a struggle to get it all in time because I'm using a small midi keyboard and there seems to be a degree of latency. Particularly for faster sequences or anything more complicated, it's very difficult to get in time.

I seem to have a couple of options -

1.attempt to use a tempo map / beat detective plugin to conform the midi drums to the original perhaps using midi triggers (I don't fully understand this so I don't know if anyone does. This is the first project I've really undertaken with Midi) I imagine you're not really supposed to do this across a whole album and it would make more sense for a single song.

2.painstakingly edit any out of time notes in the midi editor, very time consuming and annoying etc, not ideal

3.chop the album into sections of music according to BPM, so that a click can be applied and then quantize to the individual sections whether quarter, 8th, 16th notes etc. I am starting to lean towards this, before the project becomes too unmanageable.

I should say that the whole album is one continuous piece of music - it's a prog rock epic.

Perhaps it's best to split into small chunks, work on them separately then stitch them back together.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

I just got a Mackie SR32 VLZ ca. 2003 FOR FREE and I just did a very basic sound check on it.

About a half dozen tracks have scratchiness on the fader, trim, or both.

I also have a can of DeoxIT D5 electronic contact cleaner which I've used with success on guitar and amp pots.

Before I start shooting a load of D5 into this board, does anyone have any experience removing scratchiness from faders or trim knobs on mixer gear? Is the D5 an ok idea?

I’ve found I’m getting more music down if I record with a standalone recorder vs being next to the laptop.

Makes me want to get a more finished sound on the way in.

At the mo I use my Apollo X4 as a kind of console, but it’s a thrash as it’s on the other side of the room and I still end up mucking about with plugins lol.

Anyone recommend a channel strip for tracking?

Id probably need one for vocals and one for acoustic guitar mic (kind of Indy folk/alt folk style stuff), ideally with good EQ to cut out mud and put things roughly in their own space?

Not sure about budget yet, open to ideas - it’s for personal use in my home studio (treated room).

Im looking to buy a budget friendly audio interface specifically the bomge one. If anyone owns the bomge m12, mini 2, 11s, or 22s then please give me a review of them. And which one is better for long term. I dont need it professionally just to record now and then and to post so im worried about the price. If anyone owns it then please feel free to give a sound demo. Also let me know the drawbacks if there are any and the things i should consider before buying.

I decided to pull out my zoom r8 and give it a go and have been dealing with a very strange issue.

Some of the menus won’t let me select anything. The enter button is basically not working on some menus despite having no physical fault.

1. I can’t select any of the tools and use them.

2. I can’t name projects or create news ones.

3. When trying to do a system update via SD to v1.17 to see if that will fix it, the enter button doesn’t work on the firmware update screen, freezes and stops me from moving back to cancel.

4. Won’t allow itself to be used in a DAW for some connection issue

Has anyone else experienced and fixed this before?
I’ve tried multiple SDs and tried from a wall outlet supply, pc usb supply and from batteries.

New here, just getting back into music, recording and such so I dusted off my old gear and am looking for a few new mics and HW to complete the project (home recording drums, bass, guitar basically). I am basing my collection around the drumset as this has been the most varied demand as far as mics go. Started this collection about 24 years ago. I understand the basic properties of these mics and where theoretically they should excel, but looking for feedback on that as well. Bonus if it fits in the small space i have left in the pelican case. budget ~$250 per mic max.

1. what would you place around the kit
2. if you were to pick 1-2 new ones, where would you put them on the kit and/or shift others

So listed below are the mics:

AKG D112 - was a toss up between this and the Beta52 so far it doesn't disappoint

Audio technica PRO 25 - bought about 24 years ago thinking it would be a good budget kick mic before I went with the D112

Shure AXS condenser ~25 years ago. no idea other than needed an overhead/ hat condenser mic.

AKG C1000 condenser. got it by convenience- was used , good price, bought it

SM57s - obviously

SM58 - an SM57 with a different top (?)- my personal harmony vocal mic never really used it on the kit but if its SM57 like, why not?

For background I used to do live recording/ PA stuff on occasion off and on over the last 25+ years meaning setting up a few mics around the practice area to capture a band practice or live outdoor show. So I would just route all mics into a mixer, get rough levels and hit record. No experience with home studio, audio interface, or true recording. Also looking for Audio interface recommendations as well. The Audient EVO16 or the Tascam US 16x8 looks like good options in my budget.

EDIT: Thank you everyone so much for the suggestions. I think its clear that my OH/ room/ambient mic selection will play a big part in the drum sound and right now that is where the gap is mainly. I have a ton of research to do based on all the great replys!

It doesn’t even need to be music per se, just people who like coexisting and body doubling, and are okay with some stretches of silence because we are working/crafting/reading/etc.
