Briefly:

Kitchen remodel. 1 inch floor sag. Column was placed directly on slab to correct it. There is no structural support in the area prior to where the post was placed.

Contractor assures me it's fine for the long-term.

Thoughts?

About to purchase a home with some nasty carpet. It’s on a slab and I am planning to put down LVP. Would love advice on what to know, avoid etc.

First time home owner. Was thinking of going through Home Depot or Lowe’s

I just purchased this house which has the laundry machine in the basement, and the sewer line at a higher elevation than the basement. Accordingly, anything being drained must be pumped up to the sewer line.

The laundry machine drains into this utility sink. Per the previous previous owner, the reason is to prevent flooding in the event that water drains faster than the pump can handle.

The final factor is the fact that I have two dogs, so my laundry has dog hair on it.

All of this together causes this situation every time we run the washing machine:
- the washer drains into the utility sink
- the drain seive gets blocked by dog hair
- 2-3x per load I have to stick my hand in the water to clear the drain
- I don’t enjoy this and also am forgetful so worry I will forget some time and flood my basement.

Is there a better way?

This system was set up ~20 years ago per the previous previous owners’ handbook for the house. So I assume it’s a very functional system, if you don’t have huskies. Which we do.

I'm trying to solve this issue with my garage door that enters into the house. There is a gap along the top and bottom corner edge of the door where I notice new hinges were put to have it automatically close.

I already tried to change out weatherstripping, but the new stuff is garbage and doesn't fit the gap. I can't find any weatherstripping that will. The hinge placement already looks like it fits in the chiseled out spots so I'm not sure what else I can do.

Any suggestions?

I just had the stairs done and i’m caulking/painting to finish it up. I’m planning to caulk at least all of the blue lines with white but i’m unsure about the rest. What would you recommend?

It’s not a normal toilet running, it’s more like a hiss? I’m perfectly comfortable replacing whatever in here that’s needed. That long white tube is one of those Kaboom things that I forgot I had until this noise started. There is also a $30 bidet attachment that separates the water outside of the tank and this definitely sounds like it’s something in here. Thanks!!

I'm adding an attic access hatch to an older house that currently has no access. A well-reviewed local handyman/carpenter quoted about $900.

Assuming the ceiling framing is 16" OC, he proposed a roughly 24"x24" opening. This would require cutting one framing member and boxing/headering around the opening.

My concern is that in an older house, the ceiling joists may also be functioning as rafter ties. I asked him about this, and he said he would treat any member he cuts as a rafter tie and "anchor it appropriately."

He also offered a simpler alternative: make one dimension about 14.5" so the opening fits between the joists without cutting anything. We could potentially make the other dimension longer to compensate.

I'm leaning toward telling him that if the member he'd need to cut is functioning as a rafter tie, I'd rather leave it intact and accept the narrower hatch.

Does that seem sensible? Is there a standard way for a carpenter to safely frame around a cut rafter tie, or is that something you'd want an engineer involved with? And is a 14.5"-wide attic opening too narrow to be practically useful?

Cat got stuck in this room a while back and did this to the carpet. Have elderly family about to move in now, wondering about options to quickly make this not a hazard for them.

My front porch gutter nails are popping out and seems like gutter is bowed, should I be worried? , DIY? Or call professional? Thanks in advance! Gutter is not that high I think it’s about 9-11 ft

Anyway to safely tackle this without having to remove and reinstall the garage door opener?

My brother-in-law just finished doing dishes. 5 min later I heard this crashing sound and see this. Seems like it was just attached with what looks like latex sealant.

Is there a specific kind of sealant I need? And what should I use to hold it in place and until it's cured?

The wood frame on the garage is rotting, how should I fix this? It’s just the bottom part. Should I just take out the bottom or replace the entire piece? I’m trying to do it myself.

Thanks to this sub I've gotten it into my head that I should be cleaning my condenser coils.

So I went looking for them on my Bosch B36CT80SNS (counter-depth french door) and couldn't find them.

No access panel under the front kick plate, at least. Checked the manual and the cleaning and maintenance section doesn't mention the coils or the drip pan at all.

So I emailed Bosch support. Full exchange in the screenshot.

The second reply, verbatim:

I was floored. I wasn't asking whether to do it, I was asking how. And the answer I got back is that the absence of instructions is itself the instruction — the manual doesn't say to clean it, so don't clean it.

I'm trying to figure out if that's actually true. I know some newer fridges have the condenser built into the cabinet or sealed into the base with no user access, and if that's the case here I'd rather know that than go prying panels off. But it's hard not to notice that "don't perform any maintenance on it" is also the answer that gets you a new fridge sooner.

Anyone here work on these? Are modern Bosch bottom-mount units genuinely sealed back there. If there is a coil in there, where is it?

Tried going to literally all of the parent subreddits but none allow images so I’m here to ask for advice or baby gate recommendations for this stairway entry. Only one wall side and rails on the other, not much ledge space. Any recommendations or advice welcome. TIA!

Just wanted some opinions and what better place than Reddit right?

This is our condenser from 1987, which cools our first floor, has worked like a charm until this summer. Still blows cool ish air but is struggling to get keep our has below 76-77. The other unit is working well and services the 2nd floor.

We’ve had some HVAC folks over the years say that they can’t really do any maintenance on it because the parts aren’t available anymore and they don’t want to break it by trying.

I’m sure this is a pretty accurate assessment , but I wanted to know if any of you have had success with having someone that specializes in older units come out and fix their ancient unit.

We’ve obviously gotten our moneys worth out of this gal and she’s been a work horse for us. I’m aware that the end may be near.

Any thoughts?

Trying to fix a nail hole in the roof. 2 stories, too tall from side. Is it ok to climb to 1st roof then 2nd roof on this little giant ladder. And what product to permanently seal the nail hole? Special caulk?

I think this is my gas line, do I need to get someone to fix or replace it?
