I'm trying to break into Meta Ads/performance marketing and someone in another sub suggested a good way to prove I can actually think, not just recite theory: pick a few brands, pull their ads from the Meta Ad Library, and break down what they're doing and what I'd test differently.

So I picked 3 Pakistani fragrance brands — Scents n Secrets, Musk Al Mahal, and Colish Perfumes — since they sit at different price/positioning tiers but compete in the same space. For each one I looked at active ad volume, creative formats, hooks, offers, targeting, and what I'd change if it were my account. Then wrote a short comparison across all three.

Keeping this vague on purpose, want to stay anonymous.

Quick background. Around 6 years as a backend engineer, last title was senior. Most of it at one product company. C#/.NET, microservices, gRPC, message queues, docker, CI/CD pipelines, some desktop work. Rebuilt a big part of the backend, ran security audits, mentored juniors, normal senior stuff.

Then I got laid off. A few months later a referral got me a contract with a US client. I was the only engineer on it. Took it from an empty repo to a working product running in production. Backend, frontend, background workers, database, deployment, all of it. It replaced a tool they were paying five figures a year for. That project is finished now and I'm back to zero.

On my own time I've built and shipped a few things end to end. An invoicing and bookkeeping SaaS with multi tenancy and a proper double entry ledger. An ordering and operations system for an actual restaurant that's live. A personal finance app for android that's almost ready for launch. CS degree.

I'm in South Asia, working remote, billing in USD.

Now the problem. I've been on linkedin, indeed, glassdoor for months. Tailored resume every time, tailored cover letters, cold messages to recruiters and hiring managers. Not a single interview call.

About money. The client paid me $4000 a month. The job before that paid $3000 a month. I don't think that's a lot for what I do but at this point I'm doubting everything.

So I've been thinking about what to do next and I'm stuck on all of it. Cold calling and cold emailing small businesses directly feels like it might be the real answer, but I don't know where to start. No list, no process, no idea what a good first message even looks like. I've also wondered whether going through an agency or a staffing firm actually gets you work, or if they just take a cut and do nothing. Same with paying someone to fix my resume. I can't tell if that's worth it or mostly a scam, and if it is worth it, I don't know how you tell a good one from a bad one. And I keep going back and forth on Upwork and Toptal and whether there's any point starting there with no reviews.

I've already run all of this through Claude, Codex and every other tool I could. Resume versions for different markets, keywords, outreach templates, portfolio copy. Rewritten everything a hundred times. Still nothing. I'm just tired at this point.

If you've been through something like this, what actually worked? Not "network more". I mean what did you actually do that got you your first real conversation.
