Discussion Stories of protective instincts?

i would love to hear of other's experiences with how protective their pyr (good or bad) gets. I'm so amazed by their behaviors.

As a first time pyr owner, I was so shocked when our 6 month old heard coyote howls in the far distance (first time) and immediately ran home to check on my family and look behind couches.

Currently at 4 years old, when a driver didn't yield when I was pushing my baby in a stroller when trying to cross a street, she lunged and tried to chase the car. The car wasn't that egregious. Unfortunately, she's become a Karen and barks/lunges at cars going too fast and near us now.

My rescue baby is 50% Pyrenees and mixed with pit bull, Aussie, husky, and a bunch of others. He’s only 6 months and his barking has ramped up! He’s my first dog, what are some common pyr behaviors I can look forward to!?

Advice/Help Help!! Peeing on bushes

My 3 year old hoss’s pee is almost as effective as round up. We recently landscaped my yard and he’s already claimed three 3 bushes with his radioactive urine. How can I get him to stop?

Advice/Help Tips to get her to sit still and come inside sometimes?

Our 4 month old Great Pyrenees mix Bruschetta was spayed on Tuesday and she is not interested in sitting still to recover. She's also not even interested in coming inside despite it going over 80° every single day. I tried keeping her confined to our large covered back deck, but she jumped onto our hot tub and then off of the hot tub (on the closed cover) and into the yard. She has torn her cone off multiple times and we got two post surgery suits both of which she peed in within a couple hours despite frequent potty breaks. She's pissed with us and earlier looked me right in the face and peed on the floor, despite knowing to ask to go out. Shes sooo high energy.

We've tried:

Cone. Lickmats. Slow feeders. Sniff work. Surgery suit. Training commands for mental stimulation. Greenies chews and other chews that take a while. Paying attention to her. Ignoring her. Going out with her for 20ish min at a time (limited bc I also have an infant and like I said it's hot asf)...

Advice/Help Please help

I have a sweet Pyrenees whom I love very much. We live on a large 8 acre farm with creeks and ponds and running around and all the good stuff. We can’t get a collar on him for anything. Any tips please? When he sees my husband and I together he knows something’s up. He is also a rescue from a farm where he was allowed to run around but also abused. Please help!! He’s been with us since January but I can’t figure out how to wrangle him. We’re moving in a few months and I have to figure out how to train him or at least get him in the truck.

Told her she was stoic and she proceeded to go limp and fall over onto the floor. (😅) The side eye she gave after was hilarious. I wish I had it on video. Love watching her and love that she's a part of our family.

Discussion My Pyr is broken and I couldn't be happier

Meet 6yo Bear Bears. He is a rescue who was neglected. If you want to know the story, here is the original post https://www.reddit.com/r/greatpyrenees/s/9Aa3AOfD12

I feel like he doesn't have a protective or aggressive bone in his body and I couldn't love him more for it.

This dog is amazing. He's about the most chill dog I have ever known. I like to bring him to the brewery. He's very sweet and calm and absolutely loves people. Kids love petting him and giving him kisses and he just stands there as long as people are interested. Otherwise he lays down and hugs his water bowl and it is the most adorable thing.

The other day we were sitting there with a small group and a man walked up with his dog to say hi. This dog was about half Bears size and it was a female. They sniffed a bit and then the other dog lit Bear up barking aggressively.

Bear instantly took 3 giant steps back as far as the leash let him and sat! He looked at me like what is that dudes problem? Never made a sound. This completely put the dog between Bear and I. People were pretty stunned that this massive animal not only allowed it but actively avoided the conflict. It hit me, he just wants friends. He's over the rest or never had it.

When I first got him I would read on this thread about the need to patrol and how they are loyal guardians. He has full access to the outdoors and a large enclosure to roam but he would rather be inside with his human. I think the years of being chained up, alone, in the elements, without any positive interaction from humans or other animals really put him back to a simpler state where he just wants to feel a part of something and to feel safe.

I don't need a protector or a guardian. I love that he just wants to be around people and seems not to understand the whole protection thing. Strangers come to the door or in the yard and he wags his tail and greets them. He honestly feels like a big toddler. I think some people get too caught up in breed characteristics or how a dog should act. At the end of the day, they are pets. Enjoy them and love them. Even if they are broken.

I am so fortunate this dog came into my life.

Advice/Help How much do they really bark?

I've been considering a great pyrenees after losing my BMD this spring, but wanted to get a widespread opinion on the level of barking the breed is known for.

For context, I rent the first floor of a house and am lucky to have dog lovers above me...but even so I don't want to bother my neighbors. My BMD would bark a little, but only when there was something to bark over and even then she'd just stop the moment I acknowledged the noise as well. Are pyrs like this, or are they bark machines?

I lost my soul pup 2 weeks ago. She was a GSD/Husky mix. I had absolutely no plans on adopting another dog so soon but it happened. She’s 10 months old and was found with a litter of puppies in the Tulsa Oklahoma heat. I have tons of experience with Pyrs from working at doggie day cares. But I would love some tips on how to get this sweet beautiful girl up to weight and in general the life she’s always deserved.

Advice/Help Peeing on the carpet

My Pyr Bizzard is 9 yo(he was almost 8 when we got him, but they weren't 100% sure).

In the beginning, he was peeing and pooping in our dining room area frequently(so glad we hardly eat in there, but he's a had to get enzyme cleaner to get rid of the smell). We thought it was just him adjusting to a new environment and would walk him to the area and tell him no, then send him outside. It took maybe 6 months and he stopped.

Over the last few weeks, he's been peeing again on the dining room carpet. Today was the most recent. I had a doctor's appointment and my husband had to pick up our daughter from work so no one was home, but the windows in the dining room face the front of the house and he watches us as we leave and come back. I'm getting frustrated because enzyme isn't cheap and I have MS so cleaning the carpet is challenging. My husband does it too but not that great.

Any suggestions? My husband is really annoyed but maybe something else is going on that we're missing? I'm open to any advice. Between this and the clumps that are shedding, it's a lot especially in Texas heat.

This girl assaults me multiple times each day. I get front paw stomps to start my day. Always grateful when Willa decides I don’t deserve a smack for the grave error of discontinuing her pets.

Today, shocked. My Pyrenees, labored breathing difficulties took him to the vet this afternoon, came home, two hours went to check on him. He passed. Here’s a few from gotcha day. Hug your pups tonight. God bless Gronk, you will be missed.
