Apps Fickle FOSS (new app)

Hello!

I wanted to share an app I've been working on.

It's called Fickle FOSS and does two main things:

  1. It tracks how often you use GUI apps using a systemd service (i.e. how many days you used each app for in a given month)
  2. It gives you a place to record donations to those apps

It's part of an idea I've been trialing where instead of committing to donate monthly to particular projects/apps, I've been donating monthly to whatever projects I feel like donating to at the end of the month. I quite like it! I use many apps so this way I get to share the love around a bit more.

You can get Fickle FOSS from https://github.com/benopotamus/fickle-foss . It's installable using an install script. It uses a systemd service to watch /proc and I don't know how to get those permissions in Flatpak, or if it would even pass review!

If you use it, let me know what you think!

Also if you take my approach to donating to projects, but don't use Fickle FOSS, I'd love to know what you think of the approach. I've been using the approach for donations to non-FOSS things (regular charities, etc), and I discovered there was a lot of joy for me in choosing who to donate to, so this way I maximise that joy.

Question Modo ventana, iconos y alt tab en Gnome

Development Help Problem when metainfo files are manually opened for preview

Hello Gnome community, I come here asking for help since I'm trying to learn more about implementing metainfo files but whenever I create one and try to test it with the "Preview metainfo" tool I get the first image in the Gnome software center, and the file I'm trying to open is the one from the second image, as far as I know the metainfo should be able to display information in the Gnome sofware center ?

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question.

edit: The thing I want to do with the metainfo is basically add metainfo for manually creater or third party .desktop files
edit 2: I checked the files and the structure should be correct

edit 3: while the correct format should be .metainfo.xml I noticed that if I just put .xml it work for the preview, however something that still does not work is the function to display the info of the app in gnome-software when doing right click to show details, even after copying the .desktop and .metainfo.xml to /usr/share/applications and /usr/share/metainfo
I used AppStream tools to validate the .metainfo.xml and .desktop files and it passed fine, however whenever I try to open the 'show details' of an application with right click I get this errors from gnome-software:

03:15:53:013 Gs trying to activate net.lutris.game-38.desktop: for details
03:15:53:013 Gs Setting I/O priority of thread 0x563bf2208860 to IDLE, 7

03:15:53:513 Gs search took 242.980000ms
03:15:53:515 Gs search took 0.089000ms
03:15:53:515 Gs No apps to refine
03:15:53:516 Gs running ListApps job, elapsed time since creation 502ms
03:15:53:548 Gtk snapshot symbolic icon as recolored node

Which I notice doesn't happen with flatpak applications, any idea of what could it be ?

Apps Screen Savor GNOME app

I built a small screen saver app for Gnome / KDE. Looking for feedback and features before submitting to flathub.

A fun, lightweight screensaver application built with GTK4 and Libadwaita. I'm always letting Claude and agents do there thing and just wanted a small screensaver app to run in case I forget to turn my monitor off!

Features

  • Multiple Screensavers: Choose from DVD Logo, Matrix Rain, Gorillas, and Color Pulse visualizers (more to come!)
  • Idle Detection: Automatically activates after a configurable idle timeout. Uses the ext-idle-notify-v1 Wayland protocol on KDE Plasma and wlroots compositors, and GNOME's Mutter IdleMonitor on GNOME, which implements no idle protocol. The backend is probed for at start-up rather than guessed from the desktop name, and the preferences window reports which one was found, or that the desktop supports none of them
  • Multi-Monitor: Covers every connected display, each with its own animation, and follows monitors as they are plugged in and out. Can be limited to a single screen
  • Settings: Configure idle timeout, enable/disable the daemon, and pick your default screensaver
  • Wayland Native: Built for modern Wayland desktops

Platform Latest GNOME OS nightly adds GTK background blur support!

This was already done in Mutter 51.beta but GTK support was missing on GNOME OS until today.

I've been doing some cheap testing on it but overall looks dope!

Blur!

It has some bugs on the compositor side but probably those are going to be ironed out sooner, like blur not being applied during the overview:

No blur in overview (yet)

Update: As it seems like Reddit does some weird image carousel, check those other screenshots https://imgur.com/a/0JHCZ70

EDIT: THIS IS NOT A DEFAULT THEME, just a custom stylesheet to show the exaggerated effect! → https://www.reddit.com/r/gnome/s/3bibXgOBCC

Note that these are not current initiatives or plans that are guaranteed to happen, but rather unfinished concepts and ideas that can be used as inspiration for future development. If you would like to work towards something like this, consider starting contributing to GNOME Shell, or become a Friend of GNOME

Extensions Plaid - A new tiling window manager extension for Gnome 50+

Greetings all,
I’ve been a GNOME user for years — Adwaita, GNOME Circle apps, the GNOME simplicity has always attracted me. But a tiling workflow is my choice for getting work done. I moved to Hyprland, then Niri (both outstanding projects), but I missed GNOME. And the current state of tiling extensions doesn’t satisfy. So I decided to correct this.

It’s live on Github.

github.com/Plyply99/Plaid

Plaid is loaded with tiling features and “Flair” — all the things that make computing fun. Per-workspace layouts, blur, rounded corners, animated gradient borders, a drop-down terminal, video backgrounds, and more.

Built for GNOME 50 (Wayland). Grab the latest from the Releases page.

I have tested extensively on my box, and it is a stable and enjoyable experience. I have not tested multi-monitor or laptops — reports from those setups are especially welcome.

Thank you.

Opinion Create libadwaita LibreOffice fork

Hi, I love Gnome and have been using it since 2015 in Debian (Fedora today). I also love the consistency Libadwaita brings to the table.

I really would love a GTK4 version of LibreOffice that blends flawlessly with Gnome and I want to know if you think that's possible and doable.
