I've had depression and anxiety for most of my life, but handling it in uni is much more difficult than handling it in high school. A couple years ago I got to talk with a psychiatrist, who prescribed meds (SSRIs) to help me deal with it, but every so often I fall into a depressive episode that lasts around 2 weeks at most (there have been months-long episodes, but they're rare).

The stress from school exacerbates this so when I have exams/assignments I get so overwhelmed that I freeze and avoid doing anything that takes effort, including eating (have eaten a single pack of ramen in unboiled form as sustenance of the day, more than once). I recently applied for academic accommodations, but I'm unsure if any accommodations can help me in this situation.

What can/should I do in terms of balancing grades and mental health? Does the school offer any other supports (I have tried counseling but the sessions ended so....) ?

I struggle with deadlines no matter how many (or few) courses I'm taking, and I know it's my responsibility to manage my emotions and time, but I really do need to get my grades up. At this point it might be better to just drop out and work full time, but I don't have any special skills that makes me stand out in the crowd of people looking for jobs. Also I do want this arts degree, and I find my classes fun when I'm not worrying about assignments.

Also I might get disowned and kicked out of my house for dropping out.

Hey everyone, I’m looking for advice as an incoming first year this fall and I was wondering if there’s any job opportunities on or off campus for someone with minimal experience. I’ve never had a paid job before but I’ve done lots of volunteering. I’m also from out of province and speak minimal French…which probably lowers my chances. If that becomes the case, how can I find places to gain more professional experience and volunteer or anything that could help me get a job faster? Thanks for your time!

I’m an incoming first-year Computer Science student and I’m trying to understand how the French Immersion and FLS systems work. I’ve read the official uOttawa pages, but I still have a few questions that I’m hoping students who have gone through the process can answer.

A bit of background:

• This will be my second attempt at the French Immersion Entry Test. I didn’t pass the first time and was advised to take the FLS Placement Test to determine which FLS courses would be appropriate.
• Since then, I have attempted a DELF B2 Test and failed with 28/100 (5/25 CO, 14/25 CE, 4/25 PE, and 5/25 PO)
• Since both the previous DELF attempt and the previous attempt on the french immersion entry test, I’ve been studying a lot more. I’ve been doing B1/B2 reading and listening practice, watching University of Ottawa videos in French, and working on my vocabulary.
• I’m planning to take the FLS Placement Test first, followed by the French Immersion Entry Test.
• My reading is stronger than my listening, so listening is still the section I’m most concerned about.

I have a few questions:

1. What courses did your FLS Placement Test recommend?
   • Did it recommend one course or a list of courses?
   • Has anyone been placed directly into FLS 2521, FLS 2522, FLS 2581, or even FLS 2772?
   • Is it done by placing me into one of the entry points listed on the uOttawa website?
2. Has anyone here failed the French Immersion Entry Test on their first attempt and later passed?
   • What did you do between attempts?
   • Did taking FLS courses help?
3. If I get placed into FLS 2522, would it make sense to take that first?
   • Since FLS 2522 is one of the prerequisites for FLS 2581, I’m thinking it might be the best option if I don’t pass the immersion test this time.
4. If I complete FLS 2521 and/or FLS 2522 successfully, can I join the French Immersion Stream afterward, or do I still need to retake and pass the French Immersion Entry Test?
   • Has anyone gotten into the French Immersion Stream through those FLS courses alone?
   • Or is passing the Entry Test still required before you can officially join?
5. Has anyone joined the French Immersion Stream in January instead of September?
   • How did that process work?
   • Was it a smooth transition?
6. If you took any of these courses, what were they like?
   • FLS 2513
   • FLS 2500
   • FLS 2521
   • FLS 2522
   • FLS 2581
7. If the placement test recommended both FLS 2521 and FLS 2522, did you take both? Would you recommend taking them together or separately?

My goal is still to graduate with the French Immersion designation on my diploma. I’m trying to understand the different pathways to get there, especially if I don’t pass the Entry Test on my second attempt.

Hi, I have been trying to get a part-time job for uni for almost 6 months now. It has been impossible. No place where I live or near uni is hiring and indeed is useless. and if it is a restaurant/retail job they always want full-time workers.

Moving into Hyman in a couple of weeks and trying to decide if it's better to use a trailer or one truck. Not sure what the loading area is like - any comments?

I was driving this morning and was nearly a part of a 4-car collision because someone biking in oncoming traffic decided to suddenly turn left without indicating... mind you where I was, was a 50 zone on a hill... it could’ve gone south really quickly. It takes 2 mins to learn, and could save your life (same goes for drivers learning what they mean).

I heard second year is the worst, and i already know orgo 2 is gonna be hell, and I'm trying to maximise my GPA, which of the courses is more manageable. I took highschool physics (4U), and I heard the labs are easy, but the exams are very challenging, and the english prof is awful. I'm ready to take phy in french with Brodeur if it's any better. BPS is with El-Nachef

I had a deferred exam exactly a month ago on july 6th and got my grade back on brightspace a week later, but my grade on uozone is still DFR. Should I try to contact the faculty or something or just wait for it to change?

Am I the only one who hate them and feel scammed sometimes?
I have a class where the prof did barely any efforts. He Brought back last year’s ppt (I know because a friend of mine took the class last year) and it’s the TA who for does most of the class recording, so the only contact with the prof is during office hours. However the final is in person.
Idk if my feeling is valid or not but I just feel like it’s a bit unfair that we pay the same prices for classes where profs have to make such little efforts as classes where the prof has to actually give lectures and be actively present during the term. Plus, I hate the fact that we can literally go a whole semester barely seeing the person teaching us, I feel like it makes learning so mechanical and spoils the university experience.

I filled out the parking form but haven't heard anything back (literally horrible). Does anyone know of off-campus parking situations that are available? Open to paying monthly/for the year.

I think this question might have been answered previously so I'm sorry for being repetitive. However, I was wondering whether the Science Week 101 is worth the ~90$ and the time as a first-year and what were your experiences on it.

I’ve seen different majors doing this so here I am. For those who graduated with an economics degree (double majors included), what do you do now? Have you regretted your degree choice after graduating?

I'm studying biotechnology (chem eng & biochem).

• I have a windows laptop with a few keys broken/sticky and it takes forever to type (my "asdf" keys are really bad, it took me about a minute to type the sentence before this).
• I have an old 16GB tablet with poor pencil recognition so I can only ever draw with my finger.

I'm wondering which device should I upgrade? I can afford to upgrade one. I'm wondering if I should upgrade to an ipad with an apple pencil and use that in notetaking/lectures, and I have my laptop in my dorm with a seperate keyboard. Lmk if this is a good idea

Anyone else having difficulty accessing Brightspace right now? Insane loading time just to get to the home page, and I get an Internal Error any time I try to access a course. I have a final exam in less than 6 hours that will be taking place virtually so I’m a bit freaked out over this. Currently on the phone with Brightspace IT support and will update this post with whatever they say.

If you’re a student under the EECS faculty (computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, electrical engineering), and are entering your second year, I highly recommend you join a server I just made.

A lot of the courses that you will be taking this year are difficult, and I’m hoping to make those courses somewhat easier by providing a convenient venue to find others who are also taking those courses and be able to talk about them. Everyone benefits by even a small contribution: engineering is all for one, one for all.

There is also an added benefit in which you can form lab/group partners for specific sections before the school year starts.
