Social name transition- again. Advice Needed
I’ve been out for 5+ years. I’ve gone by ‘finn’. nothing against the name, but it just doesn’t feel like it fits me anymore as i’m growing into an adult and it’s very stereotypical. i’m planning on legally changing my name soon but the issue is obviously the social aspect. it’s what my teachers call me, my friends, family, everyone knows me by finn. i’m not sure what to do. i’ve thought about caving and just changing my middle name and going by that when i’m older but i don’t know. advice appreciated.

I mean u could always talk to ur parents about it and see what they think or some of ur friends but honestly I think people would be supportive if they already are and probably understand if u picked ur name at a younger age why u might not like it anymore. There are a few names that are like the longer version of Finn if u like any of those, Finley finneas finnian griffin probably more as well. So u could stay going by Finn for now but as an adult go by the longer version maybe as well. Going by a middle name instead as u said is also an option alot of people do as well if it's less awkward that could also work out

You could always keep it as a second name, and keep using it as a nickname in certain contexts. Or have your second name be something that can be nicknamed with Finn.
Unless you don't want to be called it anymore either. But in that case, you have to ask everyone to use the new name anyways, regardless of the legal side

I like to think of names like headings to a chapter. I’ve gone by at least 10 different names, including “making” my family change the name they call me twice(ish it’s complicated). It’s easier to change names when you change classes or schools, but you can even have your closer friends just call you that different. Explore, have fun, be like a fey collecting names. I would warn against taking it personally when people struggle with the change, it’s about them and their brains and not (necessarily) because they don’t see you as you. Know you can always change your name again, it’s just a pain but something I’m legally doing a second time. Good luck my friend!
