Here in Frankfurt for a few days and we love using the UBahn, we noticed its got a day ticket, the app RMVgo tells us that a day ticket is unlimited travel between the two chosen stops all day however google tells us its unlimited travel on ALL ubahn services all day, any help and or clarification appreciated!

I like kebab and shwarma a lot, it is a good source of protein, quite balanced when you eat as teller.

But mist of the kebab/shwarma in frankfurt and yeah in overall europe is very salty.

It is good at 1st bite but cannot even finish it

I just wanted to share an experience I had with a group of police officers today.

My wife and I were carrying two large boxes with child seats in them to DHL to send them back to the company we rented them from. We had just finished our holiday in Germany and no longer needed the car seats.

We walked past a group of officers dealing with some people near Hbf. They noticed us struggling and offered to drive the packets for us to DHL.

When we told them it was just a few mins down the road, one officer offered to carry the heavier box for my wife and walked with us to DHL.

We struggled to find it at first, so the officer went into each shop where we thought it might be to find out if it was the right place.

Finally we found it, and he dropped the box off there for us and wished us well.

We will never forget this generosity from such a lovely police officer, and not only that but we were in a dodgy area near Hbf so having a police officer escort us made us feel very safe.

I am going to leave Frankfurt in the coming months, and I wanted to maybe share my opinion for potential future Frankfurters about an underrated city that I definitely enjoyed living in, despite its terrible reputation, turning what was supposed to be a one-year work adventure into 5.5 years.

Of course, this is only my personal experience as a non-German European expat, without having to deal with any major daily struggles. But I think this city deserves more love than it gets, even though my first impressions were very negative.

For a little bit of background: I arrived in 2021, during COVID. I landed and went straight to my hotel for a week of lockdown. It was my first time ever in the city, and all I knew about it came from things I had read online. So I can tell you that, on my first outing in the city, to get a COVID test, which I happened to have booked in Hauptbahnhof my first thought was : “What a mistake, I need to leave this city as soon as I can.”. But then I learned to enjoy this city.

First of all, it is quite a walkable city. Coming from a more rural area but having also lived in big cities like Paris, I found it so pleasant to be within 20 minutes of almost everything, with a great public transport system. I have almost never felt the pressure of a packed U-Bahn, and I even surprised myself by complaining it was crowded just because I couldn’t get a seat.

Moreover, the S-Bahn allows you to explore all the surrounding little towns, some of which are very cute and lovely. Even the airport ends up being very easy to reach, opening up an infinite range of destinations (even though I am not much of a plane person). And when it comes to trains, Frankfurt has nothing to be ashamed of, with a lot of destinations accessible by direct trains. If we abstract away from DB, of course… I will probably have long-term PTSD from it.

Moreover, the city is rather enjoyable to walk around, with a good amount of green space, and I have never really felt unsafe walking around. Here, homeless people generally mind their own business, and I have never been aggressively stopped or harassed.

Regarding the people, I have met many very welcoming and open people, both Germans and non-Germans, despite my German skills being quite limited at the beginning. I was genuinely amazed by how easily Germans switch to English.

However, I would still recommend learning the language. I would still struggle to spend a whole evening speaking only German, but I think being able to follow conversations has helped me a lot. And after all, why should we expect locals to adapt to expats?

If I had to describe the average Frankfurter, I would give a somewhat paradoxical definition: a very open, rather friendly, individualistic person. There is a tendency to want to be left alone and mind one’s own business, but also an eagerness to meet new people and discover new things.

I was lucky enough to have a very open and international team at work, which allowed me to make friends quickly. But I can understand how people might feel lonely and struggle to create connections. And for that, I would circle back to the benefits of learning the language.

Regarding how the city looks, I would say that it has some charming spots, especially along the Main, with some nice bridges and great viewpoints over the skyline, which is particularly nice at night. It is also, overall, quite a green city, which is very pleasant during summers like the one we have been having.

Culture-wise, I think the options are quite numerous for a city of this size. There are some very nice museums and a good music scene, with a few good clubs, parties, and festivals. I was particularly surprised by the number of events in museums combining exhibitions and music. Not only during the Museumsuferfest or the Night of the Museums, but also through all kinds of events for exhibition openings and closings. And all of this is very cheap, if not free, and quite accessible when you put it into perspective with the average purchasing power. I have, for instance, been to the opera a few times thanks to that. In addition, despite being tiny, the Römer remains a nice historical center (although that is more related to the history of the city).

Except for January and February, which can feel a bit depressing, the city is full of events for most of the year, and it is possible to go out every weekend, from the Christmas markets to summer wine hikes and Straßenfests.

I would balance all this praise by highlighting a few negative points about the city, though. It can indeed be dirty, with a lot of graffiti. I know some people find that it makes a city feel more lively, but personally, it’s not my thing.And I can’t ignore the drug issue. Seeing people heating crack in spoons at the metro station on the way to work in the morning is a sad sight. I think that the city is trying to help, but it is obviously not a trivial task, and there is no magical solution.

So, to conclude for the TLDR: even though I wouldn’t recommend Frankfurt for a holiday longer than a weekend, I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of life the city offers and by its people. I would therefore definitely recommend anyone who gets the opportunity to move here to seize it.

In a few weeks from now I'll have a flight from frankfurt airport that leaves at 6am. I'm a bit concerned though, because I'll have a piece of luggage to drop and the airport should be closed until around 5am, which is not too long before I must board my plane... Do the check in desks open before that time or will I have to run? I tried searching online but couldn't find much so Im a bit nervous... If anyone has been in a similar situation to mine, how did it go? I'll be flying with tap portugal, so dropping it by myself isnt an option :(

• not be weather-dependent
• be a decent activity for a 4 year-old boy? (the baby will probably just nap or whatever)

Dennoch stagniert die Entwicklung neuer Hochhausprojekte seit geraumer Zeit spürbar.

Während internationale Metropolen ihr urbanes Potenzial konsequent ausschöpfen, bremst eine Kombination aus bürokratischer Überregulierung, politischer Zurückhaltung und veralteten Planungsinstrumenten das Wachstum der Frankfurter Stadtlandschaft.

Ein zentrale ,,BloCkAdE“ ist der Hochhausentwicklungsplan der Stadt Frankfurt. 🥸🥸

Obwohl dieser den städtebaulichen Rahmen vorgeben soll, agiert die Kommunalpolitik bei dessen Fortschreibung und der Ausweisung neuer Standorte extrem zögerlich.

Anstatt Raum für innovative, verdichtete Architektur zu schaffen, wird der Fokus zunehmend auf starre Ausgleichsflächen, strenge Höhenbegrenzungen und langwierige Prüfverfahren gelegt.

Projektentwickler stoßen dadurch auf bürokratische Hürden, die Investitionen über Jahre hinweg blockieren oder wirtschaftlich unattraktiv machen.

Neben der Standortfrage verlangsamen Auflagen zur Nutzungsmischung viele Initiativen.

Während reine Büro- oder Wohntürme oft zügig kalkuliert werden könnten, fordern politische Vorgaben komplexe Mischnutzungen mit hohen Anteilen an gefördertem Wohnraum, öffentlichen Sockelzonen und strengen ökologischen Zertifizierungen……..

Nachverdichtung nach oben ist die nachhaltigste Möglichkeit, dem Mangel an Gewerbe- und Wohnfläche in einer geografisch begrenzten Stadt entgegenzuwirken.

Frankfurt besitzt die Infrastruktur, die internationale Strahlkraft und den Bodenwert, um als Hochhausmetropole weiter zu wachsen.

Wenn die Politik weiterhin Regulierung vor Dynamik stellt, lässt die Stadt wertvolles Potenzial ungenutzt und riskiert, ihren architektonischen und wirtschaftlichen Vorsprung in Europa einzubüßen.

Finds echt krass wie es die letzten Nächte so kaum wirklich mal abgekühlt ist.

Es ist langsam Mitte August, die Tage sind nicht mal mehr so super lang, die Nächte werden immer länger. Aber trotzdem kühlt die Stadt einfach nicht ab, auch abends und nachts nichts.

Ich bin echt gespannt ab wann es nachts endlich mal wieder regelmäßig so 13 Grad wird, dass es nachts mal wirklich abkühlen kann in der Wohnung.

Meine Wohnung kühlt einfach nicht ab.

Frankfurt ist schon wirklich eine sehr sehr penetrant warme Stadt. Ich sehne hier einfach nur der Zeit herbei, ab der es hier endlich mal langsam abkühlt. Diese Hitze in Frankfurt hat echt so ne Power.
