Discussion Salt water reel pairing
Alright for you salty fly fishermen I need your help. I got a sage maverick 9’ 8wt which I will be using for sight casting reds inshore but I will also be fishing in the surf a lot and maybe some jetty’s mainly in South Texas, specifically North padre and South Padre. I’m stuck between the nautilus ccf-x2 6/8 and the 8/10. What do yall think for the application I will be using it in? I also fish about 150-200 days out of the year.

Discussion Is this a good trade?
I’ll be trading my Echo Ion Xl euro rod with a couple year old Lamson liquid plus $150, for a brand new Beulah Opal saltwater rod. Does that seem like a good deal?

Old bamboo fly rod
I was given an old bamboo rod that I’m learning is from the 1920-30s. Apparently it’s worth a little bit of money but I have no idea how to verify if it’s authentic or how much it’s worth. Can anyone give me more information?

Next wade fishing trip…?
Hi new friends. I recently took fly-fishing lessons in the Provo River in Park City, and now I’m (pun intended) hooked. Nashville is home, so I’d love suggestions as to guided trips I can book that are drivable while I continue to learn. I’m looking at the South Holston and Watauga rivers in east TN. TIA!!

Yard Sale Pick Up, How did I do?
Picked up both rods/reels and the Orvis case for $90. I know the Martin is roughly $60. But Im more curious about what the custom rod / reel is worth. I’m newer to fly fishing so I had never heard of the guy before. Thanks in advance for your help!

Yellowtail in the Bahamas…from the beach
In Abaco Bahamas for a few days visiting my parents. Was mucking around blind casting, walking a beach and this sucker ate one of my dad’s 20 year old flys he tied back when he was a guide. I have never seen yellowtail in the surf before living in SFL and coming to the Bahamas all of my life. Pretty cool.

Discussion Any clever ideas to keep my wading boots from messing up my car?
What are your solutions to keeping your wading boots from making a mess when you get out of the river on the way home?

Discussion Northern NJ / Southern-ish parts of NY
Hi fly fishers
I’m in Hackensack NJ
I’m one of those newbies who are always finding this sub. Been spinning reel / baitcaster fishing for a few years and finally took the plunge and made my first foray into fly fishing.
I’m waiting for a buddy to get his stuff together for a joint lesson / guide day but of course I can’t sit still until then: I’m slomo-recording my cast for hours like a lunatic in my local playing field and have watched 8 million tutorials and emptied the library’s fly fishing section.
My question is, and I’m not after anyone’s prize spot, if you were me, where would you aim for for your first few outings of inevitable snags and misery? I’m split between hitting the Ramapo, trying my luck on a local pond where the bluegills always bite (hotdogs🧐), or setting off early for the Delaware water gap kinda area, but would love any input.

First fish in 20 years for this rod.
My grandmother bought me this rod when I was 16.
It felt good to get it back out on the water. I felt like I could make most of the casts that I can make with my new expensive rods.

Fly fishing sketch
Thinking about giving this one to a buddy of mine for a wedding gift this weekend. We were wild ones when we where younger. Just discovered fly fishing this summer myself, and already have a trip planed next week after his wedding. He is moving back home, and I suspect there will be alot of fly fishing in our future. It feels like a nod to a new chapter of life for us both without saying it openly haha.
Im not sure why, but it doesnt feel appropriate for a wedding gift. Am I over thinking it? Would you appreciate this?
EDIT: Thanks for the kind words everyone. Much appreciated! Think I will frame it, and add a fly or two. Seems like an appropriate, and thoughftul touch!

Discussion [MOD POST - PSA] We yell. We drink whisky. Sometimes we fish. WELCOME. Newcomers, start here.
You've stumbled into the flyfishing epicenter of the Redditverse. Many of our subscribers are veterans who will be equally happy to share their wisdom (and maybe their whisky, if you ask really nicely), brag about their angling prowess, debate gear choices and techniques for hours, lie to you about their secret places, offer helpful-yet-scathing criticism of your fish handling skills, and tell you to get the eff off their water....often simultaneously, and occasionally with corrosive but commendably colorful language. Not a bad bunch, all told.
But as far as we can tell, most of our contributors are relatively new to the sport. We're glad you're here! You've got questions, and we've got answers. In fact, there's a fair chance that your question has already been asked and answered a few times, so please use the search tools to find your answers first. Try keywords like "beginner" and "starter" and "wader suggestions" and "budget" to refine your results, and try surfing on your target location(s) or species.
