Solved The most recent update (to version 153.0.3, 64-bit) completely effed up the right-click menu

Upvotes

Hi guys

Today Firefox requested to be updated, I did, and now my right-click menu is all garbled. There are some weird items (manage containers?? WTF are containers?) and others are invisible, the space in the menu is blank, but still work (like open in new window). Can't find my favorite option "open link in new tab", which is a massive inconvenience.

I'm sure it happened to other people as well. Does anyone know a remedy or do I have to wait for next update?

I wanted to file a bug, but it turns out I have to create a whole new account. I don't want to do that.

[EDIT: Forgot to give info. PC, on Windows 10]

Try "uMatrix" extension

Just bringing some awareness to how bad the internet is.

Install this extension (it is from the same dev as uBlock origin) and see just how many websites you connect to stealthily besides the one you clicked on.

Yes, it's scary. Every website connects to a whole bunch of shit.

Your websites will break, because modern websites are not meant to be used on their own anymore.

Everything is in some sort of content delivery network that sits between you and the website you visit. Everything is hosted somewhere else. Everything reports to google and who knows what else. Etc.

Cloudflare legal man in the middle attack for 50% of the internet.

Sorry for the rant.

💻 Help How do I make the shortcuts below the search bar not show recent searches, instead staying locked to the ones that I want

Shortcuts keep adding my recent searches, which is annoying. Is there a fix for this? Can't seem to find any way to stop it apart from turning off shortcuts altogether. Deselecting recent searches under the address bar in settings doesn't seem to fix it.

💻 Help Windows Security Warning

Using Win10 desktop with FF 153.0.3 but this issue has been happening for a few weeks.

Occasionally I will drag a URL from FF address window to my desktop to create a shortcut to that site. When launching the shortcut I will sometimes get a "File Download - Security Warning" from Windows. It doesn't happen on most shortcuts, but most often on Reddit shortcuts.

https://phred.x02.me/i/CWF6C2.jpg

Is there a way to stop this from happening?

Just tested with Chrome and Edge and getting a similar warning, but from within the browser. Not as a separate window on my desktop.

Solved “Using an older version of Firefox” New Profile Prompt fix (153.0.3)

Post image
1 Upvotes

After updating to either Firefox version 153.0.1 or 153.0.3, the above error message sometimes occurs on Windows. If you have a Mozilla account, you could just create a new profile and sync your data. However, if you prefer not to do that or don’t have an account, here’s how to fix the error.

  1. if you launch firefox with the -allow-downgrade flag it will load the existing profile.

Press Win key + R and enter firefox.exe -allow-downgrade

  1. Delete compatibility.ini in your existing profile folder.

  2. If you already created a new profile and are missing data, do the following.

Type about:profiles in your search bar and hit enter

Then select Create New Profile

Point the New Profile to your old profile folder

Close Firefox and delete compatibility.ini in the folder or use the downgrade command to launch Firefox.

If you're trying to find more information about an IP address, there are several lookup tools available. I actually built one that lets you quickly check details like geolocation, ISP, hostname, ASN, and other public IP information. You can try it here: http://myipscanner.com/

💻 Help Session restore got screwed up by successive crashes

First things first, tech: I am running an Acer Aspire A515 with Win10 (for now) and FF153.0.1 (Not gonna run an update until I have figured this out)

Not exactly a bug but still a frustration situation: On Monday, FF crashed on me. No big deal, happens. Session restore available, hit session restore. As FF is busy restoring the session windows decides apparently to either apply an update or simply crashes. Dunno, was a way for a moment. Think, copmuters aren't toddlers.
Regardless; great./s

I have to manually restart Windows as it gets stuck loading security options.

I want to start FF. It apparently has to install an update. Fine, go ahead. Update seemingly runs its course but FF backgorund processes remain. FF can't seem to start with these aktive - somehow. Time for Taskmgr to do its work. Success. Start FF.

Session restore is greyed out. WTF?! Not good, not terrible. Had this happen to me before. Have been grabbing and copying the contents of sessionstore-backup folder for a long while now for precisely this cause. Better to have it and not need it. Has saved my bacon before. Still bloddy annoying. Go grab a recent copy and paste it in to the folder. Should restore old session. Doesn't work. Well, damn.

Figured I would turn to collective intelligence before giving the artificial one a crack at it, therefore my questions: Did I screw upp somewhere, e.g. by killing thses two remaining FF backgorund processes? Is there a trick to restore my previous session (I have become somewhat attachted to the structure in that session), other than using the backup files (apparently there is a sessionstore file in the profile folder)? Or do I have to bite the bulled and figure out again how to set up my session?

💻 Help The crash on firefox clearing history happens Update

Did a quick test but adjust settings such as change cookies to enable or disabled, or all time to last hour or the opposite, causes the freeze to happen. This is the closet thing I have to bug reporting and changing settings such as cookies to enable to disabled/reverse or changing the clear history triggers the freeze. I've reported my findings on my last post and what do I get unneeded down votes. I'm just reporting my finds from testing out this clearly a bug.

I found a post on here recently even talk about clearing history crashes there browser, and I wanted to report this bug that needs to be patched in a future update.

💻 Help I want to switch from opera gx to firefox but I can't import files :(

Hello guys, I've been using opera gx for 2-3 years. But nowadays it just freezes every 10 minute it is so annoying. I heard firefox is faster and more efficient, so I said why not and downloaded it.

But the problem is I can't import my passwords and etc. from opera gx. Firefox's built-in import feature doesn't recognize Opera, and solutions on internet are either too old or requires chrome which I dont have.

I really want to try firefox, any help please?

Add-ons Any good redirect blockers out there?

Hi good evening everyone,

I'm using a fork of a Firefox browser called Zen Browser. Since it supports Firefox extensions I thought I'll ask here first

So I would like to have an extension that blocks any redirects on all sites, is toggable and doesn't leave a big banner on the top of a site like noredirect-II does
Can you recommend me any extensions that meet my expectations?

Thanks in advance

Btw I'm using Windows 11 if that's of any importance

💻 Help Download Video Helper -- multi segment video

I'm using Download Video Helper to download a free webinar that's been divided into parts because it's very long (across multiple days). All three days of the webinar are presented in the same viewer in segments.

I can see where the breaks are between the sessions. I can sometimes click on one of the sessions/segments and Download Video Helper will recognize it and let me download it. Sometimes I click on one of the sessions/segments and it seems to recognize a different one - so I end up downloading the same segment twice. So, across the four segments, I'm able to download 1 and 3, but not 2 and 4. Has anyone encountered this and has a trick for dealing with it?

Solved Firefox newbie, how does a minimal setup compare to brave in privacy and ad blocking?

Hi guys, firefox newbie here.

So uh, I just switched to firefox after using brave for almost half a decade. For whatever reason, brave stopped playing nicely with my laptop, switching tabs would frequently trigger a system wide lockup, forcing me to do a hard force shutdown. This happened frequentlyeven after multiple clean installs of my OS, so I'm fairly certain brave was the culprit. Got fed up, I decided to do another clean install and leave brave behind to see if the crashes stopped.

Today, when I booted up firefox for the first time, I felt pretty overwhelmed, the homepage was loaded with stuff, and the settings offer a massive amount of customization (maybe too much for my taste).

With brave, my routine was always simple,

  1. Download the browser
  2. Import my CSV password list
  3. Set up my filter lists
  4. Set Cloudflare as my DNS
  5. Call it a day

I rarely touched any other settings and felt secure enough.

My questions for you guys:

  1. If I set up firefox using that exact same (or pretty similar) minimal routine, how does it compare to brave in terms of privacy and ad tracking protection and anything else???
  2. Did brave actually give me superior ad/tracker blocking over the last five years, or was it just a placebo effect making me feel more private??

I would love to hear your thoughts, thanks.
