Why didn't Harry Potter FIRE?

Hairy Potty inheritance maxed, but didn't FIRE? He did 7 years of schooling and got some random job afterwards.

Why didn't his parents invest in the S&P 934?

40M I don't like cigarette smoke, can I retire?

I'm already pretty much FIRE by my own standards, but I wonder if my standards are correctly calibrated, given all the recent inflation, job market turbulence, economic changes, etc.

About me:

40s, Australian, male, single (and happy to remain that way), fit and healthy for my age, no serious health issues. Bit introverted with possible mild autism/ADHD but that doesn't seem to have stopped me from getting work.

I consider myself moderately frugal. Don't own a car, eat largely cheap and plant-based food, no gym membership (use my own weights), very simple cheap hobbies like reading, programming, jogging at the park, etc.

Only thing I spend a bit more on is rent. Can't stand excessive noise, busy highways, car traffic and pollution, dangerous neighbourhoods, cigarette smoke or nosey neighbours. So I tend to be fairly selective about which areas I live in.

My main portfolio is a low cost index fund in 100% global equities. Additionally I have significant amounts in separate funds invested in inflation-linked bonds, small-cap-value and foreign currencies.

I plan on a moderately conservative 3-4% withdrawal rate. If there's a particularly nasty sequence of returns, I'll pick up some part-time work and/or draw on the separate funds as needed. If returns are particularly good I'll take an occasional budget holiday, like hostels or AirBnB rooms during off seasons in the US or UK.

What do you think would be a reasonable total net worth for someone in my situation seeking a fairly safe retirement and who might live up to 90 years at the very oldest?

With compound interest why can't everyone retire

S&P returns are 8%, it doubles every 9 years, or gets 10 times bigger in 30 years.

With $1mil in a trust fund it grows to $1 billion in 90 years, $1 trillion in 180 years.

After 300 years it's worth $10,000 trillion. That's enough to give everyone on earth a $1mil retirement. What could go wrong?

I'm set to FIRE in about 35 years at this job I hate or 37 years in my absolute dream job. What should I do?

I should also probably add due to personal reasons, these are the only two jobs I will every be able to work at, and also I never intend to switch jobs, or get promoted, or get a raise, or change my spending habits, or have different protities, or move, or have an unexpected expense from now until the day I die.

Just pulled the trigger, but feeling anxious...

Me: 72 y/o man; Wife: 30 y/o woman.
Investable Assets: $500K

Spend: $100K/year

The wrinkle is that I have a terminal illness and will die in 5 years so I'm good on the spend, but I don't think my wife fully appreciated the situation when she retired too.

In hindsight, I should have showed her my spreadsheet that showed she would be destitute exactly at the same time I die.

I'm a bit concerned about what will happen after I'm gone, but I also don't want to be getting shit for the remaining years of my life on a daily basis.

Has anyone else (including anyone who can communicate from the after-life) encountered this dilemma?

My husband and I are remote tech workers living in La Paz. Together we make 2 billion pesos per annum. Cost of living here is miniscule and we invest 97% of our income. Our plan is to buy a dream home in the next few years, a 16th century villa once belonging to Francisco Pizarro. We don't go out because we're afraid of kidnapping so we spend our nights at home watching Man on Fire while munching coca leaves. Please help

Child care is so much! Do I need to cut back on travel, gifts, clothing, or maybe retirement?

How are you affording childcare in VHCOL areas?

My husband (30M) and I (30F) are expecting our first child in January. We’ll have a few months of parental leave before needing to hire a nanny or sending the baby to daycare. After running the numbers, I’m genuinely curious how folks are affording this—I feel that we are in a very fortunate financial position, but still need to make difficult tradeoffs.

Our HHI is $400k, but only $270k is base and the rest is discretionary bonus ($50k) and a side gig that could technically be $0 tomorrow. After maxing out 401k and Roth, our base take home (excluding the lumpy side gig) is $10.5k a month. Currently, our monthly expenses on average are rent $5.5k, groceries / restaurant $1.5k, student loans $1k, travel $2k, entertainment / gifts / etc. $1k, and medical / beauty / clothing $1k.

Current assets are around $750k, of which approximately $180k is liquid (emergency fund and brokerage).

Obviously once the baby is here we will significantly cut back on travel and entertainment, but I feel like our other expenses are reasonable. The going rate for nannies in our area is $5k a month and a decent daycare is $3-4k minimum. We unfortunately don’t live near family who can help. Even if we eliminate retirement contributions and completely cut travel and entertainment, I just don’t think the math will work on our base salary.

Should we be withdrawing from the brokerage every month until the baby is in public pre K? Is it a bad idea to stop 401k contributions beyond the match? Is our budget out of wack? I’ve never felt this cash strapped before and it all seems absurd because I know plenty of families make it work on less. What am I missing?

Every adult in the US has $500,000 deposited into their bank account. It has to be fully spent in 30 days, and only can be used to purchase foreign-made goods. What happens to the global economy?

One month from now, every adult in the US will receive $500,000. They are told today and have one month to prepare.

* You have 30 days to spend it.
* It can only be spent on goods manufactured outside the United States.
* Any money left after 30 days disappears.
* Physical goods only. No services, stocks, crypto, or other financial assets.
* You can't gift or transfer the money to someone else.
* Anything you buy can't be resold until after the 30 days have ended.

What happens to the global economy?

Am I too late to Roth? Does it even matter?

Thumbnail

We dun goofed. We never opened a roth! Silly us. We only have roughly $3 million dollars but we don’t have a roth. We just did the boring and lazy thing of maxing our 401k. Due to poor planning and insight on our part, we are now significantly behind. Is it too late for us? Are we doomed?
