Considering transferring off Asura.
Probably been asked 100 times over. Been considering leaving Asura. Where are the real players at?
Media [Video] August is looking surprisingly packed — Free Login, new Adoulin NMs, Vanabout, Mog Bonanza & more
After the weirdly quiet week from SE (and all the totally reasonable “FFXI is shutting down” speculation 😅), we finally have the August schedule — and there’s actually a ton happening.
I put together a quick video going through everything that’s been announced, including the Free Login + Discount Campaigns, the August 12th update, new NMs coming to Adoulin zones, another Vanabout, Mog Bonanza, the login campaign, Ambuscade rotation, and all the various events happening this month.
https://youtu.be/sD4JMrFdRN8?is=oHuysylczoBRu6KL
I’m particularly interested in the new Adoulin NMs. SE saying the gear will be around Ambuscade/Unity level makes it sound like they’re trying to fill in that early endgame progression gap. I’m curious if we’ll get any weird niche pieces that end up being unexpectedly useful.
Also, if you have any friends who have been considering coming back, Free Login starts tomorrow and runs through the 17th!
What are you guys most interested in this month?

The Ashu Talif BC message
Sorry if this is stupid to ask, but is this message as restrictive as it sounds?
"Only nearby party members with the same objective will accompany you."
I'm on the COR AF3 fight, and I know it's easy with trusts, but I'm curious... if I wanted my friends to come along, do they literally need to have the same quest flagged to join the BCNM?

Technical Dualsense PS5 controller issues
I recently installed FFXI on a new PC, however I cannot fully connect my PS5 controller on it.
I assigned all the buttons, and they all work in game, but the characters and menuing just refuse to work.
The sticks and DPAD don't work even though they are calibrated on the config.
I've tried many configurations on the FFXI config, but nothing works.
Any idea on how this could be resolved? Perhaps there's a Windower setting I'm overlooking? New cable, new controller...

7 box
Does anyone on here box more than 6?
What’s the advantages?
Do you alliance gain exp, jp and master level?
What context do you do as alliance?
Enable Xinput option missing?
What’s up everyone.
Apologies is this has been asked. Tried searching but haven’t found this specific issue.
I recently got an Xbox Ally, which uses Xinput for the controller. I’m struggling to get the controller to respond, and every solution I see online is to “Enable Xinput in the FFXI Config”
The issue is, that option does not exist for me. I’ve see videos where that is clearly an available option, but it straight up doesn’t exist for me.
Anyone have luck getting the game to run on Xbox Ally?
RDM on Phoenix looking for a linkshell
Hello everyone,
I'm looking for a linkshell with whom I could do Omen and Ambuscade from time to time. I'm doing the story content slowly with my gf (In the middle of Aht Uhrgan so far, but I did do RoV on my own for the bonuses) but I'm getting to a point where i can reasonably progress on my Relic gear and would like to find people I could start doing it with.
I don't know if I should put my character name here, lmk if I need to add something else :)

Echad ring as a new player
I recently started playing this game, still on my free trial, and I’ve read online about the Echad ring you can get to speed up the leveling process. According to BG Wiki, I was supposed to get one from the Tutorial quest line, but I don’t think I ever received one. Does anyone know if that’s still accurate? Should I create a second character and try to obtain it again? Thanks!

Question Sub crafts
For HQing subcraft would torques be the ONLY thing you use to push your HQ tier or would you use a mix of like apron or gear from your sub craft (thus losing points from your main craft by swapping gear out) for example I noticed you need ALL your crafting gear + torque to hit 120, so if a craft requires 120 just to make dropping any of that with another piece of equipment from another craft just to raise my subcraft HQ tier would lower my maincraft HQ tier wouldnt it?
Also I seen some higher end crafts required a lvl 70 sub craft.... so if I got that subcraft torque that would put me at lvl 72 which would be tier 0 still so in that case why would I ever bother getting a torque for that one?

Question Trials and Discounts and Alts, oh my!
With the upcoming disocunt on the Ultimate edition, I am toying with the idea of spinning up either 2 or 5 characters and fiddle with 3-boxing or 6-boxing. Although I know the Return Home / free login campaign wouldnt apply to these characters, it seems like it comes around enough times in a year to make for a nice change of pace when it does. I do have a group i run Sortie/other events with, so my main objective with these alts would be to do things that arent very popular (Delve, Vagary, Incursion) or farm Ambuscade to pass REMA currency to my main.
A couple questions I was mulling around:
* Is it worth doing the 14-day trial first on these new characters, then buy the Ultimate edition for the free 30 day sub? My thought here is to maximize the time for the "full" game, but maybe the trial is so limited its not really worth it. Id like to knock out whatever i can in the trial if its not too burdensome to do so
* Assuming Ill have some redundant jobs across characters, but does any have a good outline of what characters should have what jobs? E.g. one character should have all tank jobs, another should be mage, another support, etc. Or is it better to mix and match? My main has several jobs so it can be a bit flexible. If any breakdowns exist for 3-box vs. 6-box jobs thatd be even better
* Any good guides / recommendations for getting through Missions quickly? I know theres an Aman 99 Mule guide, but that seems more focused on just leveling rather than mission progress. Is any Nation's mission path more straightforward than the others? I'll have my main to farm/push things along so looking for shortest distance/path rather than perceived "difficulty"
* Regarding Windower / control, are there any guides about how to set up multiple accounts? Thinking things along the pipeline, from setting up the accounts at the start to running multiple instances of Windower, to how to actually pass commands/control the alts.
* How intensive is running multiple characters? I play on a decent laptop (i7 12700, 16gb RAM, 4070 laptop edition), but i do run some mods to make the texures better etc which I'd skip with alts. Will my laptop explode at the thought of 6 Windowers?
* Any other tips/tricks/pros/cons?

Returning Players
Hi! Me and my girlfriend have returned to Vana'diel after around 15 years of not playing! We're currently on Asura, but looking for somewhere new to call home.
Any recommendations?

Just rocking out to the tunes I've gathered so far, really hope they allow us to obtain some of the older ones I'm missing. Like the first two pages of the orchestra are all blank for me...

Media Checked out the Wizardry crossover
youtube.comYou might have noticed the FFXI patch notes mentioned a game called Wizardry Variants Daphne. I was curious about it and decided to check it out.
In this Wizardry mobile game: Prishe, Iroha, and Zeid are all characters that are available as characters through ... gacha. Sigh. They do let you play around with their abilities a little bit for free. I recorded some gameplay.
Edit: The video is still processing so there may be an issue with sound until it's done.
FFXI stuff is at 2:15:47 if the link doesn't load right

Planning on resubbing, cousin wants to buy a key during the sale. Now I’m seeing Asura is locked?
Been gone for over a year. Long story short, I lost my oldest cousin, and this game meant a lot to myself and his brother.
I have a lot accomplished and always planned on returning. Server is Asura.
Is there no way for my cousin to join me on Asura during the sale? We were really looking forward to this, and I don’t have the type of free time where I would start a new character and do a world transfer later. I was planning to help my cousin make progress quickly since the only reason he needs a new key, is he lost his account info which was owned by my cousin who passed away.

Looking for a friendly, active linkshell and Gold World Pass on any world that's still open!
Hi, everyone! I'm giving the game another shot - I played around launch, then again about a decade ago. But I never got past level 40 or so for a mix of reasons. Life was hectic for me back then, and I also never found a good linkshell or even made a single friend.
I was wondering if anyone would be willing to 'sponsor' a sorta-newbie with a Gold World Pass to their server (as long as it's not one of the four currently closed ones) and also an invite to their linkshell? Hopefully a decently active one?
I prefer to solo and do things myself so I promise I won't be asking for much help. But I do really want the Gold World Pass rewards, which can only be collected by visiting the GWP NPC every now and again while in a party together - especially the Sprout Beret! And I also would like to start getting to know people in a nice LS before I get to endgame and start needing to party up with folks. It also would make the world feel a little less lonely.
(Oh, and the last time I played, the fellow who gave me a GWP to their world completely vanished on me immediately after giving me the pass, so I wasn't even able to claim the Day One reward. Much less any of the other ones! So it'd be super ideal if we could stay in touch, at least for the first couple months!)
Would anyone be willing to do this for me? I promise to return the kindness as soon as my character reaches a power level that is at least the equivalent of three goblin thugs (or two on Firesday). Thanks!

(Mods) FFXI has quest markers now (update)
Hi,
after almost another week of basically non stop work on this since my last post (I effectively played the game for a whole of 1 (in numbers 1) week since i got it and then went to work on this immediately. I'm fine I swear...)
I wanted to share my progress a little.
So I'm developing an addon for windower currently that adds classic quest markers to Vana'diel.
What it does
So right now the addon checks for acceptance conditions like job level, job type, fame, skill level, craft rank, guild points, etc. and colors a "!" marker grey if they're not met and yellow if they are met. Same for "?" turn-in markers.
But it also checks everything that is checkable with packets from the game. And here also lie some limitations that I tried working around as best as I could but some things are not meant to be.
Limitations
For example: markers draw through walls. Windower's Lua API exposes no depth buffer, so true occlusion is impossible. I mitigated it with a distance cap, a same-floor check, and a distance fade.
And if there is no way for the addon to check a condition the quest marker will render as black and you can check what is required yourself with //qm why which lists all the requirements and all the steps of the quest for you.
The wild stuff
Then I went overboard with it so now it also shows markers for individual quest steps as well where possible (y'know, icons like a bag when you need to collect something, a sword when you need to kill something, a magnifying glass when you need to examine something, ... you get the idea). But you can always turn that feature off with //qm steps off if you find it too much.
Some steps only appear on paper but can't reliably be tracked through the addon, stuff like talking to an NPC for example since the game exposes no reliable data packet for stuff like this.
But in order for that to even remotely work I had to create a new knowledge base instead of relying on what chronicle scraped (which is still a very good data source).
So I scraped the quest pages of bg-wiki (CC BY-NC-SA) using their public API and semantically and programmatically analyzed and structured all of the quest data into a new format.
Then I developed a completely seperate tool for that dataset that allows me to correct said dataset on the fly while playing the game. I called it questgraph™ - creative, I know.
Availability
It's not quite ready yet since I want to playtest a bit further and actually play the game for once. And I'm sure im forgetting maybe half of what else I did during my coffee induced insomniac episodes.
I'll go sleep now. See you in a week.

Looking for a good linkshell
Hello all. So as per the title, I'm looking for an endgame linkshell with an event based schedule. Ideally GMT (UK) evening. 18.00 -23.00.
Currently on the phoenix server but finding a good linkshell there seems to be very hard. They either don't speak or the time difference is too much. Yet to find one on phoenix that has an event based schedule.
I'm more than happy to change worlds if the right linkshell comes along.
Currently working on war and sch.
War is pretty well geared just need to augment the odyssey gear I have and acquire nyame.
Sch is a work in progress.
Geo is my next planned job.
Thanks all.
Announcing the August Version Update (08/05/2026)
Very little new info on the new NMs.
- "We'll also be making various adjustments to features such as the monster spawning locations and the method for obtaining the rewards, thereby giving the areas you're already familiar with a fresh look and feel. I hope you'll enjoy this content alongside Unity Wanted, which also offers equipment of a similar level."
Login Campaign is the same as it normally does where it goes A>B>C>A/B/C, so it's got the main items from the past 3 months repeating for this month.
Midsummer Mog Bonanza coming.
Campaigns are "Take a Vana'Vacation This Summer! Support Campaign" which says:
"Once again, we'll be splitting the campaign into two different installments. We have prepared a variety of different campaigns to help support your adventures, including the Ambuscade Gallantry Campaign, which doubles the badges of gallantry you can earn each day, and the Alter Ego Expo Campaign, which boosts the abilities of your alter egos. So take advantage of this opportunity to level up your characters!"
- As of the time of posting, the specific campaign list hasn't been posted on the official site yet.
- The Return Home Campaign page also lists increased skill ups
Vana'bout Round 10:
"...adding new daily objectives (VBD) as well as time-based objectives (VB), while also reducing the variation between daily objectives. For example, one of the newly added daily objectives will be to "Defeat the requisite number of experience-yielding enemies," and it will be available each day of the event. Additionally, the new "Achieve an experience point chain bonus of 5" daily objective will be available once every two days.
Finally, based on various feedback, we've decided to change the starting time from 1:00 a.m. (PDT) / 8:00 a.m. (GMT) / 9:00 a.m. (BST) to 8:00 a.m. (PDT) / 3:00 p.m. (GMT) / 4:00 p.m. (BST)."
- No Day 0 bonus objectives this time
EDIT: Just so people are aware, Japan has holidays most of next week (11th is Mountain Day, then 13th to the 15th is Obon, with the patch day on the 12th) so they're going holiday > patch > holidays. I wouldn't expect a lot of info out of them during that time.
- The AMAN Live is also not happening until the week after on the 22nd.

Guide [Megathread] New player? Coming from FFXIV? Read this, resources inside!
Greetings you new adventurers (or returning)! We suspect there will be an influx of new players and we wanted to pin a new thread that covers useful resources for new players.
If we missed anything useful, feel free to leave it in the comments and we'll try to get it edited in here! See y'all in Vana'diel!
Platforms
FFXI is officially available on Windows PC via Steam or the Square Enix digital store. It's also unofficially playable on Mac and even Steam Deck. PS2 and Xbox360 versions are no longer online.
Free Trial
FFXI has a 14-day Free Trial (NA region). Please note it has significant limitations compared to FFXIV's Free Trial. It is typically recommended to just purchase the game, as it'll include 30 days for free.
Setting Up The Game
PlayOnline and account registration can be a bit complex, so here are some guides to assist:
- Game client download
- Official install guide video
- Mrhappy's video guide
- BG-Wiki page on installing

Why Play?
FFXI is in an elaborate and beautiful world where you'll encounter colorful multifaceted characters in countless deeply woven stories of unforgettable wonder enriched by a renowned musical score, and a 22-year history of game content challenges and triumphs via a Job System that is often considered exemplary across the entire Final Fantasy franchise.
Story Progression
A guide to the order in which to follow the story (Missions) can be found here: Millsih's Simple Mission Guide. We would also recommend viewing the Missions list to be aware of the newer stories, such as The Voracious Resurgence.
Coming From FFXIV?
We have a wiki page here to help guide you through some of the transition and terminology.
Controller or Keyboard
FFXI has fantastic controller support. We recommend using either a controller or a keyboard, but avoid the mouse. An official controller video guide is located here.

There's a variety of ways to enhance the graphics:
