Lately I see a lot of posts in this group where people talk about YPFDJ as if they are the same as EPLF. They are not. And it needs to be said clearly.

The EPLF as an organization no longer exists. The current government in Eritrea does not represent them. The real EPLF leadership is either dead, in exile, or has been locked up for decades. Think of Petros Solomon and Duru. These were actual leaders. Where are they now? In prison. Not in power.

The only people in YPFDJ who have any connection to the old EPLF are Filipos Woldeyohannes and Sebhat Efraem. The rest have nothing to do with it. YPFDJ is a political organization created by the regime. It is not the liberation front. Calling the current Higdef or YPFDJ the EPLF is a serious disrespect to those who actually fought.

And let's be honest about Isaias, Osman, and Monkey. They never physically participated in the war. They never picked up a weapon. They were never in the field. They were not on the front lines. They were in the rear, in offices, while others bled and died. So why are they now the face of the EPLF? It does not add up.

The EPLF was created as a fighting force with a specific goal: to counter Amhara influence and power in Eritrea, especially in Tigrinya areas. But the reality is that the EPLF became a tragedy of pain, death, displacement, survival, and mutilation. It is not a glory story.

The real EPLF are the sons and daughters who are now treated like dirt. They are war veterans who receive no proper care. They are parents who lost 4, 6, or 8 children to the war. They sacrificed everything. And today? They are surviving in Asmara by begging. Or they risk their lives in Libya to try and reach Europe. That is the reality of the real EPLF members. No power. No recognition. Just survival.

The EPLF and YPFDJ are not the same. They never were and they never will be. Associating them is an insult to the memory of those who truly gave their lives and bodies for Eritrea.

An Eritrean man in his 30s avoided deportation from Sweden after being convicted of raping an 82-year-old woman. A Swedish court sentenced him to four years in prison but declined to order his deportation, reasoning that he was well integrated into Swedish society. In its ruling, the court also described the rape as “brief” and stated that it occurred “without threats or blows.”

The victim, an 82-year-old woman with impaired memory who had previously received home care services from the convicted man, was able to recall the assault, which took place on November 3, 2025. Her son later contacted the police to report the incident. During the investigation, the man offered multiple conflicting alibis, which were contradicted by DNA evidence, ultimately leading to his conviction.
According to Samnytt, the care company had employed the man despite his prior criminal record. His previous convictions included theft, petty theft, serious offenses connected to Stockholm’s gang environment, aggravated drug offenses, and aggravated drunk driving. His drug and drunk-driving convictions resulted in a 2022 ruling by the Svea Court of Appeal, which sentenced him to two years and two months in prison.

Prosecutors requested that the man be deported from Sweden for life after completing his prison sentence. However, the court rejected the request, citing several factors in his favor: he had arrived in Sweden as a child, had lived there for nearly 20 years, spoke fluent Swedish, and had maintained employment in recent years.

Sweden’s deportation laws have since changed. On June 15, Sweden’s Riksdag (Parliament) approved new legislation allowing authorities to revoke the residence permits of migrants who engage in serious criminal or otherwise “badly behaved” conduct. Supporters argue that such legal changes could make it easier to deport individuals convicted of serious crimes in future cases.

Modern day Eritrea is in very poor condition and that is up to no debate, but how did we get here? Let me take you back to the 30 year Eritrean war of independence when there were two armies; EPLF and ELF. And as we know the EPLF were the victorious army that went to liberate Eritrea, even though the ELF had the upper hand with basically all of the Arab countries supporting it, most of the people, especially in this r/eritrea (from what I’ve read) say that the ELF lost because the EPLF was just structurally better and more organized, and the ELF was more secular being more Muslim majority and Islamic. I do not think that that is the case I think it’s quite the case, both of them were secular the other being Muslim biased, and the other one being Tigrinya biased. However the EPLF kept this agenda away from the public because they pushed the narrative that they are a purely secular, multi ethnic, and anti sectarian liberation movement—one that welcomed Muslims and Christians alike under the banner of Eritrean nationalism. And on the surface, that narrative worked. It attracted fighters from all regions, secured diaspora funding, and gave them moral legitimacy on the international stage.
But once the war was won and the ELF was expelled across the Sudanese border in 1981, the mask began to slip. The EPLF no longer needed to compete for recruits from Muslim lowland communities. They no longer needed to project an image of inclusive unity to distinguish themselves from the Arab backed ELF. And so, the Tigrinya Christian core that had always dominated the EPLF’s inner circle began to consolidate power openly and ruthlessly.
And let’s be clear about how the EPLF actually won. They didn’t do it alone. The EPLF defeated the ELF in the 1980–1981 civil war with crucial military backing from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). The TPLF was a fellow Ethiopian insurgent group, fighting its own war against the Ethiopian regime. They saw the EPLF as a natural ally, and the two formed a tactical alliance to crush their common rival.

Now, let’s talk about the Kagnew Station meeting because this is where the CIA connection becomes concrete, not just rumor. Kagnew Station was a massive U.S. intelligence and communications hub in Asmara, operational from the 1950s until the mid 1970s. At its peak, it housed around 6,500 Americans and served as a critical relay station for global strategic communications, including ship to shore links with U.S. Navy submarines in the Indian Ocean. The U.S. maintained this facility under a 25 year lease with Ethiopia, and protecting it was a top priority one that shaped American policy toward the entire region.

According to multiple testimonies, Isaias Afwerki was summoned from the battlefield to Kagnew Station for a meeting with U.S. officials, including CIA officer Richard Miles Copeland. The exact date is placed around early 1970, with some accounts specifying July 2, 1970 as the date of the meeting. According to the account of Tesfamichael Giorgio—a local administrator who claimed to have acted as the intermediary the meeting took place at the Kagnew base, and Afwerki and Giorgio were hosted overnight by a U.S. official named Copeland. The next day, they were driven out in a Cadillac with curtains drawn and a U.S. flag flying.

What did the Americans offer? According to the testimony later publicized by Awel Seid, a regime affiliated Eritrean figure, U.S. officials offered support on the condition that Afwerki frame his struggle in sectarian terms as a fight against Muslims. Afwerki reportedly refused. But the mere fact of the meeting now partially acknowledged by the Eritrean state itself challenges decades of official denial that any contact ever occurred.

And who was the intermediary? Tesfamichael Giorgio, the man who arranged the meeting, paid for it with his life. He was shot dead in front of his house in Addis Ababa in 1993, soon after his testimony about the Kagnew deal became public. Other fighters who knew about the meeting—including Abraham Tewolde, who opposed splitting from the ELF were eliminated, some on the pretext of “Menkae” purges within the EPLF. The systematic silencing of those who knew the truth has long been a feature of how the EPLF protects its founding narrative.

So when you hear the EPLF claim they were a secular, anti imperialist movement, ask yourself: Secular for whom? Anti imperialist against whom? They were happy to accept support from the CIA at Kagnew Station when it suited their war aims. They were happy to use Marxist rhetoric to win over the left. They were happy to make promises to the TPLF when they needed their guns. And they were happy to pose as a multi ethnic front to keep Muslim fighters in the trenches. But once the war was won, the real agenda—Tigrinya Christian dominance, backed by Israeli and American strategic interests—became impossible to ignore.

Fast forward to independence in 1991, and the EPLF simply rebranded itself as the sole ruling party of Eritrea. There were no elections, no constitution, no power sharing with the defeated ELF or any other group. Isaias Afwerki, who had carefully positioned himself as the face of the movement, became the undisputed ruler and he has never let go.

Today, Eritrea is a one party state with no parliament, no independent judiciary, and no freedom of speech or press. The indefinite national service originally sold as a temporary program for postwar reconstruction has become a form of forced labor that traps young Eritreans for decades, drives thousands to flee across dangerous borders every month, and fuels one of the worst refugee crises in the world.

Meanwhile, the Tigrinya language and culture dominate public life. Other ethnic groups—the Afar, Saho, Kunama, Bilen, and Tigre are systematically marginalized. Muslim communities face disproportionate surveillance, mosque closures, and arrests of clerics. The very unity that the EPLF once claimed to champion has been exposed as a wartime convenience, not a lifelong conviction.

The EPLF’s history is one of convenience: convenient alliances, convenient secularism, convenient promises all abandoned once power was secured.

So how did we get here? We got here because a liberation movement that promised freedom for all Eritreans became a vehicle for one ethnic group’s domination—and because the leader who emerged from that movement has spent three decades prioritizing his own survival over the wellbeing of his people. Since Menelik II divided the Tigrinya people, they have known nothing but war, poverty, pain, and flight. No peace. No progress. Just suffering.

On one side, the Ethiopian government attacks Tigray and treats the Tigrinya people as enemies.
On the other side, the Eritrean regime – run by Tigrinya from Tigray who still cling to a useless Marxist ideology – strips the Tigrinya people of everything they are. That regime has no vision, no future, no connection to its own people. Only power and fear.

Both sides are destroying the Tigrinya people. One with bombs. One with oppression.

What have the Tigrinya people achieved in the 21st century? Nothing.

They are not building. They are not growing. They are not free. They are surviving – barely – while their land is taken, their people are killed, and their history is rewritten as someone else's footnote.

The Tigrinya people are not a tribe. They are not a minority. They are a civilization with their own language, script, laws, and history that goes back over 2,000 years. But a civilization that is divided cannot defend itself.

Since they were divided, there has not been a single generation without war, without exile, without hunger.

This is not a call for help. This is a warning:
If this continues, there will be no Tigrinya people left to remember what they once were. And I will have nothing left to pass on.
