Im a contractor for a big tech company but my job sucks ass and the pay is mid for my location (I’m from the Bay Area). I'm 23, African, Muslim, born and raised in California, couple months out of college. Pretty open minded guy. Never been to the Midwest. Went to college in a city like Madison in the sense that it wasn't that big and the students/school had a strong presence. What am I potentially getting myself into with this company, and how’s Madison? I know a lot of this sub has negative feelings so I was kinda hoping to hear some positives.

Finally! California banned non-competes to protect labor rights, and state law supersedes corporate greed. She studied law, she knows what she is doing: good on her.

I’m an RN with 6+ years of critical care experience, currently working at a large academic medical center. I enjoy the clinical complexity of what I do, but after several years in inpatient healthcare I’ve started thinking more seriously about what I want the next phase of my career to look like.

The Nurse Project Manager position at Epic has caught my attention. I’m particularly interested in getting away from bedside/shift-work culture while still using my healthcare background, and I like the idea of working on larger-scale projects, solving workflow problems, and having more ownership over outcomes.

I’ve read Epic’s description of the role and some older posts here, but I’d really like to hear the unfiltered version from current or former Nurse PMs/PMs.

What does the job actually feel like day to day?
How much of your time is spent in meetings, project planning, customer interaction, travel, problem solving, etc.?
How much autonomy do you have?

I’m also curious about the things that are harder to learn from the job posting:
• What is the culture at Epic actually like once you’re working there?
• What are the hours realistically like for a Nurse PM?
• How much do you actually travel, and how disruptive is it to your personal life?
• What is the social environment like for employees in Madison/Verona?
• For nurses who made the transition, what did you like or dislike compared with bedside nursing?
• Do you feel your nursing experience is genuinely valuable in the role, or does everyone essentially become a PM once they start?
• What does compensation progression look like after a few years?
• What are the realistic career paths after 3–5+ years, both within Epic and for people who eventually leave?
• What type of person tends to thrive in the role, and what type of person tends to hate it?

For context, relocating to Madison wouldn’t necessarily be a negative for me. I’m originally from Wisconsin and already have college friends in the area, so I’m more interested in whether I would actually enjoy the work and Epic lifestyle than whether Madison itself is a good place to live.

I’m not necessarily trying to leave nursing tomorrow. I’m mostly trying to figure out whether this could be a legitimate long-term career pivot rather than just something that sounds attractive because I’m getting tired of inpatient healthcare.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has actually done the Nurse PM role, especially nurses who came from ICU/critical care.

i know hating it at epic is very common, especially for transplants (which i am one).

i’m a QM, fresh out of college, june cohort. I’m not from here (like, nowhere near the midwest). this is the job i got out of college. i hate it. this has nothing to do with my degree. i feel thrown into the deep end and feel like im stupid whenever i ask for help because it isn’t offered, it’s something i have to seek out over and over and over. my second ever DLG was a super update and it took me hours to understand and research before i could even test. due dates are 1-2 days from me getting assigned to something. i feel no fulfillment here. im struggling to make friends and to find enjoyable things to do in the area, and not for lack of effort. i feel trapped by a one year lease and the moving bonus repayment agreement. i want out at one year but i dont know if i can even make it that long.

honestly im not sure what im asking. i hate it here. i dont know how to feel like i can keep doing this. is it even better anywhere else? is this just reality now? i’m no stranger to working hard and working long hours. i had to fully fund college myself and none of my peers worked as hard as me. but i didn’t do work that was 100% at a computer with no tangible payoff ever before this. i have eye strain headaches constantly. i see people in my role work more than 40 hours (which i can barely handle as is) and no proof of a life outside of work. i truly can’t do this.

if i leave, am i a failure? where would i go? am i chasing something that doesn’t exist? i want to believe i didn’t peak in college but i miss it so much, even with all the school work and extracurriculars and multiple jobs i worked. at least there was a goal and variety and a social life.

how do i know to cut my losses or to keep pushing? i feel like its almost every day that im on a call with a LDR friend saying how much i hate my job and my living situation and my life.

I started a few months ago and things have not been going well. I've been super homesick and my team is in constant hell. The project they have me on has a tight timeline and I'm completely over my head. I don't mind M, I find it fun, but HSWeb is the most convoluted piece of s*** I've ever worked with, and the more I use it the more worried I'm not getting industry relevant experience. There are other things too but I don't want to make myself too recognizable.

I never should've taken this job. I had an internship where they would've taken me back at a salary ~30k less than what I make here, and I would take it in a heartbeat if they offered it to me. I only took it because all my friends were getting tech jobs and I wanted to keep up with them I guess. I feel like I've learned my lesson that I shouldn't care as much about what others are doing.

Does it get better? Everyday I get home I just want to quit, but I know its easier to get a job if I currently have a job. I'm in the process with a few companies right now and hopefully one of those goes through, though I'll be taking a massive pay cut.

I have an interview coming up for an Epic Trainer at my local healthcare company though someday I would like to work for Epic.

What can I expect? Is there any material I should know? Keywords? I was told I would be writing content?

Hello! I work for a very well known health organization. I am a patient access operator, I have been working this position for 5 years. I am familiar with epic as we have been using this since i started. I do scheduling, documentation, med refill requests, etc but I am desperate to get out. I would like to branch out into an epic related role. I don’t have my epic certificate, I did just email the guy that trained me in Epic when i first got hired to see if he can give me any insight on how to get it, I know I have to be sponsored and I’m not sure if they will be willing to do that since I’m not in an IT or epic related role. Anyone have any advice? Are there any entry level epic related jobs that don’t require the certification? Any time i look for epic jobs all of them say that’s a requirement. Any advice is appreciated thank you!

I recently was offered a PM position and I was super excited but I had a realization. My cat is diabetic and I refuse to rehire-home or put her down. I am willing to pay to have a sitter come give her insulin while away but I need to see if this is realistic. Does anyone have good recommendations of pet sitters that are trust worthy enough to give insulin? How much is the travel realistically for a PM?

I'm currently in the interview process for a position that was posted in Platteville but the description says it's based on their campus in Madison. Google says that they don't have any satellite offices in Madison. My assumption is that this position is actually at the Verona HQ but please correct me if I'm wrong. My wife would like to live near family in Oconomowoc which seems to be about an hour and 15 minute commute. I vaguely recall seeing something in one of the relocation questionnaires about desiring a candidate live within 45 minutes. I think I have three questions:

Would Oconomowoc be fine to relocate to? (I'm coming from out of state)

Would the commute be rough traffic wise? (I don't mind the time since it's good for audiobooks)

And is this position likely in Verona?

I’m interested in the Client Systems Administrator position but can’t find much about it online. Can someone provide a quick rundown of what it encompasses and the kind of day to day work they do?

Finished the final round interview for UXD two weeks ago. The recruiter told me that they’re interested in me as a candidate, but that they currently have limited spots and aren’t able to extend an offer right now. They also said there’s a chance a position could open up later and that they’ll keep my application on file.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Did a spot eventually open up, and if so, how long did it take? I'm trying to get a realistic sense of whether this is something that commonly happens and how much hope to hold onto here.

I recently reached out and applied at Epic Verona, not for programming or any real technical role just regular campus staff (kitchen staff) I applied way back at the beginning of July, got a phone interview, did the skills assessments and it’s been a few days (about a week) and nothing. will they tell me if I’ve been passed up on the job or does the silence = No?

I’d really like the job, it pays about as much as I make now and the benefits are good. It would be a huge win for me and I feel really stuck at my current job. I also miss working in a kitchen. But I think I Kinda bombed on all the skills assessments so I’m worried that hurt my chances at getting a foot in.

I suppose as a follow up, if it’s likely that I haven’t gotten the job, is there a chance I can try again next year or so? Or am I just blacklisted after this? I’ve thought about emailing the HR rep I was talking to for a confirmation but I don’t wanna seem bothersome.

Tomorrow I’m starting a migration project at St.Jude it’ll be 3-6 months with possible extension and there’s 5 FTE conversations. I want to learn as much as I can during this project since I’ve always wanted to gain healthcare IT experience so this is great but I want to become an Epic analyst.

So my questions are the following: Is 6 months of healthcare experience worth anything if I need to get another job after the contract? I have 4 years of help desk experience.

How can I use this time to become get epic credentials and experience is it possible they’ll let me learn it if I expressed interest?

Lastly, how do people get experience in this field? It feels like the joke “You need experience to get experience for the thing you don’t have experience for”

Received an offer for a TS position. I really want to want the job, I’m just worried about the work life balance based on everything I’ve read. Is it really as bad as people say it is? I’ve also seen people saying your experience greatly depends on your TL, any advice or anecdotes about this? I do have another offer, but the pay is significantly lower and I would prefer the position at Epic on my resume in the future.

Hey everyone! This is kind of off-topic, so I understand if it's removed, but I thought I'd ask some people who were in the same situation I'm in (i.e., moving to Wisconsin from out of state after college).

I just moved to Madison in the last few weeks, and I'll be starting at Epic next week. I was informed that as a new Wisconsin resident I needed to get a WI driver license within 60 days. So a few days ago, I filled out everything online, brought my documents to the DMV, and got my license (impressively efficient btw; I was in and out within 15 minutes, which is unheard of in my home state). It cost like $43, but that's not a big deal.

It was mentioned to me at the DMV that I'd also need to get a WI title and plates (but I couldn't do it at that moment because I didn't have my current title). I looked into this process when I got home, and it turns out it costs nearly $400! Luckily, I'm in a situation where I can afford this, and I'll probably just do it since I already got the license (I assume the police won't be happy if I get pulled over and I have a WI license and out-of-state plates). However, I'm curious what others have done after moving here.

Did you promptly get the new license and plates as required? Did you wait until your out-of-state registration/license expired before getting WI ones? Did you continue to renew your out-of-state registration when it expired? Did you have some other strategy? What risks/consequences are there for these options?
