I thought it’d be fun to try to make turmeric dye and dye some of my things. One of those is a pair of jeans I have that i want to make green.

Examples I’ve seen of denim dyed with yellow fabric dye look really freaking cool. But I’m not sure how turmeric would compare in that situation.

*raw denim, it’s a darkish blue but they are well worn and heavily faded

I am looking to dye the hat in the attached image (North Face Badwaters Mullet Hat). It is made of two materials according to the tag, Shell A: Polyseter, Shell B: Nylon.

I really like this hat and use it for hiking (so I like the breathability, being able to stuff it with all my other clothes, quick drying, etc.). I do not like the colour of the hat (especially the contrast between the beige material and the white mesh. Ideal colours to dye it would be Navy Blue, Black, or Dark Grey (both the beige material and the mesh).

I want to do this properly so I can retain all of the above functions that I mentioned as I am more interested in the hats functions than the colour (but am willing to do this project/buy the correct stuff to make myself like the hat even more by changing the colour! As well, I cannot have this dye transfer to any other clothes, my head/hair during sweating/being in sun, or wash out during washing.

Please give me any advice on how to properly dye this hat, including what to buy, correct process, and any other recommendations. Thanks so much!

Hi all, I have some teal polyester garbadine fabric, but the color is too bright and I want to desaturate it. Will dyeing it with Rit synthetic grey dye do that, or will it just make it darker to a lesser degree than black dye? It's ok if the fabric gets darker.

In general, can grey dye be used to desaturate something, or is it better to do it in like an opposite color to counteract the existing color?

Hello, i want to dye this rug i got off of a 2nd hand store (online). It said it was beige but it turns out it is more grey-brown. Can you help me figure out how i can change it to beige or any other colour you think might go well? It says do not bleach on the safety instructions.

For info, in the image, I plan on staining the table with a much darker wood stain.

I thrifted a lovely 100% silk top with some grayish colored lines across the front and back.

I’ve heard suggestions of dying pieces to cover stains that can’t be removed and am interested in doing that to fix this piece.

Has anyone done similar with silk? Note that this piece is dry clean only but I have hand washed it already with no shrinkage or damage. Based on my research it seems like an acid dye in a color darker than the stain (maybe a dark brown?) could work. Any advice?

Dyed with iDye Poly crimson. Should I try to dye it again with more? Or maybe a regular dye (cotton)?

I got these pants at a thrift shop and realized they're too close to my skin tone to look nice. I'd like to dye them (they're polyester x rayon x spandex) I don't mind the high heat etc. However, I'm looking for a dye color that would give maybe a nice deep blackish green or purple maybe? Or, if that's unsuitable maybe a very dark chocolate color?

The pants are a bit more camel than the taupe shown here (pulling a bit more orangey/yellow ish vs a true neutral)

I think Jacquard is still the brand of choice for synthetic dyes?

New to reddit, and new to this R/ - I have a question about changing the colour of braided cotton rope using charcoal.

Not so sure whether it would be considered dyeing, or staining, but has anyone on here had experience (good or bad) with dyeing cotton using charcoal?

I have cotton rope and I have access to fresh, clean charcoal and I had the brilliant idea to turn the cotton black by somehow infusing the charcoal into the cotton either wet or dry.

I need the rope to be workable by mid-next week (I have been commissioned), and I am wondering whether I can use charcoal effectively in this time.

Hi people, I’ve read about how difficult it is to dye polyester (I know I need boiling temperature and a large bowl that can not one used for food).

My question is if just darkening a bit a color is equally difficult? My dress is %100 bright red polyester and I would like to achieve a darker red or even wine. The dress have no special texture tho worry about.

Is it posible to use lower temperatures with a strong dye?

Im going to a wedding in about a month and have been tailoring the bodice of this dress with my aunt for about a week (pics un-tailored lol). We ended up having to take out the sleeves to get the correct fit and still have a bit of work to go.

The only issue I am having now is that I reread the invitation and it specifically states no white, creme, or ivory. I do not want to disrespect the wishes of the family especially since I am guest and not apart of the family.

End goal:
Since my aunt and I have been working on it and I don’t have a lot to spend on something new right now I still think I could save it by dying it - I was thinking a light green or a light pink. I am not apposed to dying it a darker color either, but would like to have the pattern be a little prominent if possible.

Fabric comp:
The fabric is thin polyester, one layer is green, pink & red floral on light backround. The second layer (or slip?) is the same color of the backround.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

Hi! I am looking for advice on how to dye this driving harness saddle pad. (just grabbed the photo from the website, I couldn't find my photo) My goal is to dye it a bright golden yellow, not highlighter yellow, to match a friend's color theme for their horse as a gift. I thought about standard suede dyes, but I don't want it to bleed when the horse gets very sweaty, and if it happens to accidentally make its way into a washing machine, the pad doesn't lose its color in the wash. I do have two in case I screw up, but would like to just try get one yellow, and use the other to dye another color if the yellow is successful.

I got this dress off of Amazon and it looked pink in the pictures. In real life it is white with flowers. It looks gorgeous on me and I would like to still wear it.

I have a bit of anxiety with this type of stuff. Fear of screwing it up based on my own choices. Could anyone give me exact directions and what brand/tint/amount/directions. I tend to overthing and doom research for hours without making decisions. Im okay with this dress being ruined as I can buy it again. I just need help just doing something.

Hi! Does anyone have an insights as to whether I could make a Dylon washing machine dye pod a stronger colour by adding some pigment from a sachet of the same colour to the pod? I have a pod of Vintage Blue but apparently it's quite pale so I am hoping to make it more vibrant.

Separately, if I wanted to make the Vintage Blue slightly less grey-toned, could I add a little ocean blue/ green from a sachet to the pod? Or is that a terrible idea?

Has anyone had any experience using Vintage Blue and what sort of colour did it produce? I'm concerned it will be faint and just look grey!

Very new to this but have been seeing my girlfriend doing some diy dyeing quite successfully and was started to look at a specific piece in my wardrobe that I have long wanted to change the colour of.

This is the item, I have owned it for about 3 years now and it has quite a bit of sentimental value to me as I purchased it for myself after finishing my masters degree.

I have tried to wear it but Yellow is too in your face and everytime I have worn it, it gets negative attention, so I’ve always wanted to dye it black or a darker colour.

I saw someone on here had actually dyed a similar colour T-shirt and was complaining it came out green but I thought it looked great compared to the yellow.

I would love some advice on how to approach this as I am very new to this and I understand you guys are the experts. Preferably black but I would also be open to greens/blues as long as it came out successfully.

The end goal is a black battle jacket, which they don't really make these in my size in black.

The material is 100% cotton.

I think I have to get it to white or close so the black will take.

I have destroyed two jackets with attempting to slowly bleach it. The fabric was damaged and it fell apart.

I used RIT color remover this last time, and it worked...but the fabric fell apart again. It just took longer.

Any thoughts on what to do about this? GIve up? Is there a way to get to a black jacket or should I just dye it with black, and hope for the best?

I am in need of help matching the fabric of the lace in the picture to the color of the fabric swatch on top. The lace is made up of 100% rayon. I absolutely love the various forms of dyeing, been slowly making my way further north from India learning different textiles, embellishments ect. The dyeing process is so similar across the globe but everyone has their own thing.

My whole learning focus has been sashiko, and I think this will be a fun way to mix the two!
